It's called eisegesis - the process of interpreting a text, (as of the Bible) by reading into it one's own ideas, presuppositions, or biases. It involves reading something into the text that is not explicitly there.
Yes, this is a very widespread problem with the religious system of this world which promotes deceptions, or as Jesus called them, "Leaven" to those who adopt the various interpretations of Scripture, which changes according to the religious sect or business of this world promoting it. The most common manifestation of this popular religious practice is shown by selecting only specific verses that can be used or twisted to promote "one's own ideas, presuppositions, or biases" and separating them from the rest of the Holy scriptures. The religious sect of the Pharisees partook in this practice, according to the Jesus "of the bible".
Another is like it, but more popular, and that is to quote part of a passage, but omit the full message.
An example would be like giving directions.
"Go two miles to the river bridge and turn left on Palmer Road and go to the end of the road".
But what gets delivered is: "Go two miles to the river bridge". As a result, the intended destination is not reached.
A perfect example of this is your post above.
Ephesians 2:8 For it is by free grace (God's unmerited favor) that you are saved (delivered from judgment and made partakers of Christ's salvation) through [your] faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [of your own doing, it came not through your own striving], but it is the gift of God; 9 Not because of works [not the fulfillment of the Law's demands], lest any man should boast. [It is not the result of what anyone can possibly do, so no one can pride himself in it or take glory to himself.] (AMPC)
This short sermon was preached by you to promote your "own ideas, presuppositions, or biases" against many of God's Judgments, Statutes and Commandments that the religious business or sect of this world you have adopted has rejected. To do this, you must omit the very next verse. And not just you, but "Many" who call Jesus Lord, Lord. So please, I'm not picking on you, just pointing out what I have seen since "Coming out of her". Look what happens to the message when just one more verse, the actual intended conclusion of the message as anyone can clearly see if they want to, is included for our study and examination.
8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that (Grace) not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:
9 Not of (MAN's) works, lest "any man" should boast. (God's Grace exists apart from anything any man can do, lest he should boast as say, "My Ways" brought Grace unto men.)
Here is the part you left off.
10 For we (Those who have "Yielded themselves" unto God, and their body as instruments of righteousness unto God) are (now) his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus "unto good works", which "God" (Not any man or religious sect) hath "before ordained" that we (Those who have "Yielded themselves" unto God, and their body as instruments of righteousness unto God) should "walk in them".
And where did Paul say these "Good Works" God before ordained that he and the Body of Christ, Jew and Gentile, should walk in them, are found?
2 Tim. 3: 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, "and is profitable" for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
And what is the purpose of these Inspired scriptures?
17 That the "man of God"(Those who have "Yielded themselves" unto God, and their body as instruments of righteousness unto God) may be perfect, (As the Jesus "of the Bible", and His Father instructed) "throughly furnished" unto all "good works".
This is Paul teaching from the onset.
Rom. 2: 5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; 6 Who will render to every man "according to his deeds": (Works)
7 To them who by patient continuance "in well doing" seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life:
8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
Therefore, if I walk in the "Good Works" that GOD Before Ordained in the Holy scriptures that (Those who have "Yielded themselves unto God, and their body as instruments of righteousness unto God) should walk in, I'm not walking in "my" Works, "lest I should boast", but Christ's Works within me, since HE is the Head of (Those who have "Yielded themselves" unto God, and their body as instruments of righteousness unto God) AKA, the Body of Christ.
So as you can see, the message Paul promotes in Eph. 2 is completely different when we don't listen to men, "Who call Jesus Lord, Lord" but who engage in "the process of interpreting a text, (as of the Bible) by reading into it his own ideas, presuppositions, or biases, that involves reading something into the text that is not explicitly there", by omitting important parts of the message.
