Thou Shalt Be Saved - An Exposition of Romans 10:9

According to the Apostle Paul, only those who believe, not with a head knowledge, not with a historic knowledge, but with a heart knowledge of Christ shall be saved

The only way to make sense when teaching Bible,
Is to speak as the Bible speaks.

The heart in the Bible is the mind. So, head knowledge is heart knowledge. One is not something and the other something else.

The Bible heart reasons, has emotions, chooses

The Bible heart:
Thinks: Matthew 9:4 ; Genesis 6:5
- but Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Why do you  think evil in your hearts
- the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth and that the intent of the  heart was only evil continually

Understands: 1 Kings 3:9,
- therefore give to your servant an understanding heart to judge your people that I may discern between good and evil for who is able to judge this great people of yours

Reasons: Mark 2:6-8,
- and some of the scribes were sitting there reasoning in their hearts....

Belief: Romans 10:10,
- for with the heart one believes unto righteousness and with the mouth confession in made unto salvation

Intention: Hebrews 4:12,
- for the word of God is quick and powerful and sharper than any two edged sword piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart

We can learn from Scripture that the Bible heart is the mind of man.
They are not seperate from one another.

Matthew 23:37,
- O Jerusalem, Jerusalem the one who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her, how often I wanted to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings and ye would not

God calls the Jews to Him but they refused.
Gods desire is to save them.
Jesus wanted to give them grace but they refused it.
This proves grace is not irresistible.
The Jews have free will to choose Christ or reject Him.

Irresistable grace, unconditional election is error.

Romans 10:9-10
The heart belief that Paul speaks of in Romans 10:9 is that which only comes with the new birth.
All belief of a man comes from the heart.
There is no such thing as belief that comes from the heart and belief that comes from the brain.
The Bible does not teach from the heart is different than from the mind.

- that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead thou shalt be saved
- for with the heart one believes  unto righteousness and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation

Paul says belief leads to righteousness.
And confession leads to salvation.

Paul does not teach that belief and confession two conditions to receive Gods grace, instantly gift salvation.
Its unto salvation. It leads to the future of one being saved.

Keep reading chapter 10 and you will learn that calling on the name of the Lord happens after believing and confessing not instantaneously.

Romans 10:9-14,

This shows:
Hearing the message comes first.
Then believing.
Then confessing.
Then calling on the name of the Lord.

Verse 14, shows the order.
1.
- how then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed(Must believe first before one can call on the name of the Lord)

Paul shows belief comes before calling on the name of the Lord.

2.
- and how are they to believe in Him of whom they have not heard

No one can believe in Jesus if they haven't heard the gospel about Him.

3.
- and how can they hear without a preacher

Hearing depends on someone being sent to preach the gospel.

Conclusion:
1. Preaching the gospel must happen first.
2. People then hear the gospel.
3. Then they are able to believe the gospel.
4. Then they call on the name of the Lord for salvation.

Romans 10:9-13-14,
- for whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved
- how then shall they call on Him to whom they have not believed and how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard and how shall they hear without a preacher

Chapter 10 only teaches how this order of salvation follows.
You hear, believe, confess then call on the name of the Lord.
But Paul does not teach on what is calling on the name of the Lord in this chapter.

But he does in telling his own conversion to Christ in the book of Acts.
Acts 22:16,
- and now why tarriest thou Arise and be baptized and wash away your sins calling on the name of the Lord

So, the order of salvation occurs in this order:
1. Hears the gospel.
2. Believes the gospel, Romans 10:17.
3. Confesses faith in Christ with the mouth publicly, Matthew 10:32-33.
4. Calls on the name of the Lord by being baptized into Christ Galatians 3:26-27)

Paul did not teach on repentance or baptism in chapter 10 of Romans.
But we learn that when the Jews on pentecost in Acts 2, were commanded by Peter to call on the name of the Lord he told them to repent and be baptized.
So, those are all the steps of salvation in Jesus' gospel for the alien sinner to be saved.

Acts 2:21 = Acts 2:37-38,
- and it shall come to pass that whoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved
- then Peter said unto them repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit

Summation of the gospel of Jesus Christ unto salvation.

Steps of salvation:
Hear the gospel.
Believe the gospel.
Repent of sins against God.
Confess faith in Christ publicly.
Be immersed in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins.

This is how one calls on the name of the Lord.

Romans 10:16,
- but they have not all obeyed the gospel for Esaias saith, Lord who hath believed our report

Many today misunderstand Rom 10:9 and find a way to from it teach a conditional salvation, however its not, its more of a giving evidence one is saved and shall be saved. This article is very enlightening:

Thou Shalt Be Saved - An Exposition of Romans 10:9

How shalt thou be saved? This is a great question of the scriptures. And the answer is given to us in Romans 10:9 which states, "That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." This verse of scripture answers many of the questions that arise over the question of how can one know if a person is born again, saved, and going to heaven when they die.

According to the Apostle Paul, only those who believe, not with a head knowledge, not with a historic knowledge, but with a heart knowledge of Christ shall be saved. Contrast this with James 2:19 which states, "Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble." Many people in the world today believe there is one God. Among them are Muslims and Jews to name a few. Yet, we are told the devils also believe there is one God. No one would ever say that the devils are saved because of their belief in one God. Thus, the point of this scripture is it takes more than a mere acknowledgement of belief in God or Jesus' existence to qualify as saving belief.

The heart belief that Paul speaks of in Romans 10:9 is that which only comes with the new birth. John 3:3 Jesus tells Nicodemus, "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." The reason a man must be born again is he must be given a spiritual nature that can see by faith the spiritual but physically invisible kingdom of God. And then in Romans 2:29 Paul states, "But he is a Jew (i.e. spiritual Jew - JT), which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart , in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God." The spiritual circumcision of the heart is a spiritual circumcision performed by God and God alone. If it were in letter, as with ordinary circumcision the praise would be of men. But this circumcision cannot be performed by any man. Only God can touch the heart.

Furthermore, this passage cannot be construed to teach that this salvation is the result of any action on the part of the believer. Many people read Romans 10:9 and make the mistake of thinking that a person can appropriate the salvation by his own efforts. Whether one believes this salvation to be eternal salvation or time salvation it is not one a person can get. Paul says that if thou shalt believe in thine heart, thou shalt be saved not get saved. Thou-shalt-be-saved is translated from sodzo which is in the future tense, passive voice, indicative mood; Online Bible Greek Lexicon.

Because sodzo is in the future tense the salvation under consideration is a future salvation indicating it is referring to eternal salvation. This does not mean salvation does not take place until we enter into glory nor does it deny the antiquity of our salvation before the world began, 1 Tim 1:9. But rather one can not be said to posses it until he believes in Christ, and then he is declared to be saved in both this life and in eternal life.

The passive voice means the action (salvation) happens to the person. In other words, he is not active in gaining or achieving salvation. He believes because he is saved. He does not believe to get saved which would be the case if it was in the active voice. To put it another way, if sodzo was in the active voice, meaning the person must secure it, then the correct translation would be thou-shalt-get-saved. But this would contradict the scriptures which tell us salvation is by grace and not by works. Eph 2:8, Rom 11:6 Therefore, salvation is a state of being and belief is the evidence of salvation.

Finally, it is in the indicative mood. The indicative mood means that it is a statement of fact. Many who read statements such as Rom 10:9 think they see it in the imperative mood which would give a command (believe) in order to achieve a condition (salvation). If it was in the imperative mood, then one must-believe-in-order-to-get-saved would be a correct translation. However, the indicative mood tells us that if one believes, one is saved; a statement of fact.

How is one saved? By Jesus Christ and Him alone. How does one know if he or anyone else is saved? If one believes on Jesus Christ and Him alone. What kind of belief in Christ qualifies as saving belief? Belief from the heart. What does one believe about Christ that qualifies as saving belief? Belief in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. How does one know if one is saved? If one confesses with his mouth the Lord Jesus, and believes in his heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, "thou shalt be saved."

A whole bunch of man-concocted nonsense. What is this so-called heart belief or knowledge versus head belief or knowledge? And it does not say in Romans 10:9, because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you have been saved., rather it says, "you will be saved". Confession comes first then comes salvation.

You cant accept that wisdom

The heart in the Bible is the mind. So, head knowledge is heart knowledge.
It is not so simplistic, Titus, as you portray it. The heart is the spiritual core of the man, the absolute essence of his being. It cannot be separated from the “mind”, but it is not just another word for the mind.

To say I love something with all my heart, is not to say I love it only with my mind. Heart is much, much more than just the mind.

Not even close. You did that when you accepted the Gnostic Manicheanism of Augustine.
Yes, Salvation is by Grace which means by election, election of grace, thats who is saved Rom 11:5-7

5 Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

6 And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then it is no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

7 What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded.

Yes, but Augustine, and hence you, screwed up the identity of the elect.

Can belief come from the heart and not from the mind?
Do you understand why calvanist make this distinction in their theology?
