Nothing we can do is capable of obligating God to favor us. Our nature is irrelevant in the long run, because God, as Sovereign, is not capable of being obligated by anything outside of himself. This is why salvation and all blessings are gracious and cannot be merited.
This was true even in the early days in the garden before the fall. God was never obligated by Adam and Eve’s actions, but only by his own words and promises. Even in the best of circumstances, God is never obligated to do anything simply because of our behaviors or desires.
All things are gracious, both before and after we believe!
