When Grace is not Grace

A Sinful Woman Pours Perfume on Jesus

36 One of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him. So he went to the Pharisee’s house. He took his place at the table. 37 There was a woman in that town who had lived a sinful life. She learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house. So she came there with a special jar of perfume. 38 She stood behind Jesus and cried at his feet. And she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair. She kissed them and poured perfume on them.

39 The Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this. He said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him. He would know what kind of woman she is. She is a sinner!”

40 Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”

“Tell me, teacher,” he said.

41 “Two people owed money to a certain lender. One owed him 500 silver coins. The other owed him 50 silver coins. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back. So he let them go without paying. Which of them will love him more?”

43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who owed the most money.”

“You are right,” Jesus said.

44 Then he turned toward the woman. He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water to wash my feet. But she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss. But this woman has not stopped kissing my feet since I came in. 46 You did not put any olive oil on my head. But she has poured this perfume on my feet. 47 So I tell you this. Her many sins have been forgiven. She has shown that she understands this by her great acts of love. But whoever has been forgiven only a little loves only a little.”

48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”

49 The other guests began to talk about this among themselves. They said, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”

50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”

The woman already knew who Jesus was and came uninvited into the house.
She came to anoint Jesus, because she knew who he was. Jesus had never seen her before.
This was only 1 of 3 similar accounts in the Gospels.
In each account, a woman pours out a precious and costly perfume in an extravagant act of worship. The three women who anointed Jesus recognized Christ’s unequaled value and expressed their gratitude with unreserved love and devotion. Two anointings of Jesus happen during the week of Passover and are linked with His imminent death and burial. The earlier anointing, in Luke’s account, is in the middle of Jesus’ ministry in Galilee and draws a different lesson on forgiveness and love.

In each case, the woman’s actions signal more than she knows. But, although she may not fully comprehend the messianic significance of her anointing, each woman had come to appreciate Christ’s worth more than anyone else at the table.
In the case of the woman from Luke above.... she did not know until Jesus said “Your sins are forgiven.” “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”

She was not given faith before hand or after by Jesus....
She was one given to Christ and given Faith in Him

Acts 5:31 tells us that during Jesus' ministry, He specifically told the Twelve that men would drag them before courts and flog them, but they were to teach their oppressors about Him anyway. This is exactly what is happening here. Jesus also told them to not worry what they will say; the Holy Spirit will give them the right words. It's not faith and repentance

The context of Acts 5:

25 But someone came and reported to them, "The men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!"
26 Then the captain went along with the officers and proceeded to bring them back without * violence (for they were afraid of the people, that they might be stoned ).
27 When they had brought them, they stood them before the Council. The high priest questioned them,
28 saying, "We gave you strict orders not to continue teaching in this name, and yet, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and intend to bring this man's blood upon us."
29 But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than men.
30 "The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you had put to death by hanging Him on a cross.
31 "He is the one whom God exalted to His right hand as a Prince and a Savior, to grant repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.
32 "And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him."

Which translation are you using? Never mind... KJV or Websters. OK

Repentance is not faith. Repentance is not forgiveness of sins. Sorry... that woman came to it on her own by her own hearing.

Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God..... Romans 10:17

NIV says... Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.

NLT says... So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.

Amplified says... So faith comes from hearing [what is told], and what is heard comes by the [preaching of the] message concerning Christ.

God's Word says... So faith comes from hearing the message, and the message that is heard is what Christ spoke.

Weymouth says ... And this proves that faith comes from a Message heard, and that the Message comes through its having been spoken by Christ.

Youngs says ... so then the faith is by a report, and the report through a saying of God,

MORE?

As you can see... people hear about it and then they have faith or not. It is their choice,

The word repent means “to change one’s mind.” The Bible also tells us that true repentance will result in a change of actions. God does change our minds for us.

Israel is still a Jewish nation. They have not changed their minds.

The concept of repentance and atonement with the institution of the ancient Temple’s sacrificial system, which held that atonement could be achieved through the sheading of blood.

The nation has not, but the messianics individually have, because they have heard.

Faith is given by the Saviour as a Gift Acts 5:31

31 Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.

He is the author of it, the causer/source of it Heb 12:2

2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

You just evading the Truth
Thankfully, the Bible contains a clear definition of faith in Hebrews 11:1: “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Simply put, the biblical definition of faith is “trusting in something you cannot explicitly prove.”

Here is how we get saving faith.

“Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ”
Romans 10:17

You must believe the message to have faith. It is believing and trusting the Word of God that produces faith.

Sounds right to me. We have faith because we believe in what Jesus did.

Take John 3:16... For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Since He Loves the world why doesn't He give everyone faith.
