CHRIST’S FAITHFULNESS AS AN EXAMPLE OF SAVING FAITH
In this post I will provide further evidence that saving faith according to the Holy Bible is defined as faithfulness to the Lord Jesus. I will use Christ’s own faithfulness as an example.

For instance, note how the following versions rendering a key text that is often employed in discussions on justification:

“namely, the righteousness of God through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ (pisteos Iesou Christou) for all who believe. For there is no distinction,” Romans 3:22 New English Translation (NET)

“God’s righteousness comes through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ for all who have faith in him. There’s no distinction.” Common English Bible (CEB)

Here’s what the NET textual note states concerning this particular Greek construction:

tn Or “faith in Christ.” A decision is difficult here. Though traditionally translated “faith in Jesus Christ,” an increasing number of NT scholars are arguing that πίστις Χριστοῦ (pistis Christou) and similar phrases in Paul (here and in v. 26; Gal 2:16, 20; 3:22; Eph 3:12; Phil 3:9) involve a subjective genitive and mean “Christ’s faith” or “Christ’s faithfulness” (cf., e.g., G. Howard, “The ‘Faith of Christ’,” ExpTim 85 [1974]: 212-15; R. B. Hays, The Faith of Jesus Christ [SBLDS]; Morna D. Hooker, “Πίστις Χριστοῦ,” NTS 35 [1989]: 321-42). Noteworthy among the arguments for the subjective genitive view is that when πίστις takes a personal genitive it is almost never an objective genitive (cf. Matt 9:2, 22, 29; Mark 2:5; 5:34; 10:52; Luke 5:20; 7:50; 8:25, 48; 17:19; 18:42; 22:32; Rom 1:8; 12; 3:3; 4:5, 12, 16; 1 Cor 2:5; 15:14, 17; 2 Cor 10:15; Phil 2:17; Col 1:4; 2:5; 1 Thess 1:8; 3:2, 5, 10; 2 Thess 1:3; Titus 1:1; Phlm 6; 1 Pet 1:9, 21; 2 Pet 1:5). On the other hand, the objective genitive view has its adherents: A. Hultgren, “The Pistis Christou Formulations in Paul,” NovT 22 (1980): 248-63; J. D. G. Dunn, “Once More, ΠΙΣΤΙΣ ΧΡΙΣΤΟΥ,” SBL Seminar Papers, 1991, 730-44. Most commentaries on Romans and Galatians usually side with the objective view.sn ExSyn 116, which notes that the grammar is not decisive, nevertheless suggests that “the faith/faithfulness of Christ is not a denial of faith in Christ as a Pauline concept (for the idea is expressed in many of the same contexts, only with the verb πιστεύω rather than the noun), but implies that the object of faith is a worthy object, for he himself is faithful.” Though Paul elsewhere teaches justification by faith, this presupposes that the object of our faith is reliable and worthy of such faith. (NET Bible https://netbible.org/bible/Romans+3)

The assertion that pistis Christou and its related expressions should be taken as a subjective genitive referring to Christ’s own faithfulness to God is striking since this establishes that it is faithfulness which justifies and saves.

With the foregoing in mind, I will list all the verses which refer to Christ’s faithfulness, as well as to the faithfulness of God, being the ground and basis of/for a believer’s salvation and justification:

“yet we know that no one is justified by the works of the law but by the faithfulness of Jesus Christ (pisteos Christou). And we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by the faithfulness of Christ (pisteos Christou) and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.” Galatians 2:16 NET

“However, we know that a person isn’t made righteous by the works of the Law but rather through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ. We ourselves believed in Christ Jesus so that we could be made righteous by the faithfulness of Christ and not by the works of the Law—because no one will be made righteous by the works of the Law.” CEB

I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So the life I now live in the body, I live because of the faithfulness of the Son of God (pistei … tou Hyiou tou Theou), who loved me and gave himself for me.” Galatians 2:20 NET

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. And the life that I now live in my body, I live by faith, indeed, by the faithfulness of God’s Son, who loved me and gave himself for me.” CEB

“But the scripture imprisoned everything under sin so that the promise could be given—because of the faithfulness of Jesus Christ (pisteos ‘Iesou Christou)—to those who believe.” Galatians 3:22 NET

“But scripture locked up all things under sin, so that the promise based on the faithfulness of Jesus Christ might be given to those who have faith.” CEB

“This was according to the eternal purpose that he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and confident access to God by way of Christ’s faithfulness (pisteos autou).” Ephesians 3:11-12 NET

“In keeping with the eternal purpose that God carried out through the Messiah Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and confident access through his faithfulness.” International Standard Version (ISV)

“and be found in him, not because I have my own righteousness derived from the law, but because I have the righteousness that comes by way of Christ’s faithfulness (pisteos Christou)—a righteousness from God that is in fact based on Christ’s faithfulness (te pistei).” Philippians 3:9 NET

“and be found in him. In Christ I have a righteousness that is not my own and that does not come from the Law but rather from the faithfulness of Christ. It is the righteousness of God that is based on faith.” CEB

It should be further noted that the NT writers (particularly Paul) make it clear when they are referring to a person’s own faith in Christ. They do this by employing a prepositional phrase, either the preposition eis or en, just as we find in the following examples:
“nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justifiedamen) and by faith IN Christ (hemeis eis Christon episteus not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.” Galatians 2:16 Legacy Standard Bible (LSB)

“For you are all sons of God through faith IN Christ Jesus (dia tes pisteos en Christo ‘Iesou).” Galatians 3:26 LSB

These examples simply reinforce the fact that pistis Christou should be taken as a subjective genitive referring to Jesus’ own faithfulness.

With that in mind, I now present the verses that are mentioned as examples where pistis is used as an objective genitive, referring to the faithfulness of an individual in bringing about healing and/or salvation. All the references will be from the NET.

BIBLICAL VERSES ON FAITHFULNESS/OBEDIENCE
Here’s an older version of this article: TRUE FAITH IS FAITHFULNESS AND OBEDIENCE PT. 1.

In this relatively short post, I will highlight verses which testify that saving faith is being faithful to obey God’s commandments.

Note, for instance, what John wrote in his inspired Gospel:

“But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” John 1:12-13

“And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.” John 3:14-21 English Standard Version (ESV)

“Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.” John 5:24 ESV

“‘Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.’ Then they said to him, ‘What must we do, to be doing the works of God?’ Jesus answered them, ‘This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.’” John 6:27-29 ESV

“Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”” John 6:35-40

The words rendered as “whoever hears/believes/believed/does/comes/looks” are all present active participles and literally mean that it is the one who is continuously hearing, believing, coming, and looking to the Son that shall be saved. I.e., everlasting life is granted to those who are actively trusting and continuously believing in Christ till the end:

“And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.” Matthew 24:12-13 ESV

And the way one does so is by obeying Christ’s commandments, just as the following verses show:

“Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him.” John 3:36 ESV

“As he was saying these things, many believed in him. So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, ‘If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:30-32 ESV

“‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments… In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.’ Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, ‘Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?’ Jesus answered him, ‘If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.’” John 14:15, 20-24 ESV

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one WHO DOES the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ Everyone then who hears these words of mine and DOES THEM will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock.And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them (lit. the one not doing them) will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.” Matthew 7:21-27 ESV – Cf. 25:34-45

“but Christ is faithful over God’s house as a son. And we are his house, if indeed we hold fast our confidence and our boasting in our hope… For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end.” Hebrews 3:6, 14 ESV

“And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him,” Hebrews 5:9 ESV

Here are examples where individuals are said to be condemned for being disobedient:

“For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened… Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience,” Hebrews 4:2, 6 ESV

“‘A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense.’ They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do.” 1 Peter 2:8 ESV

“Likewise, wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives… because they formerly did not obey, when God’s patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.” 1 Peter 3:1, 20 ESV

This again highlights that true saving faith is being obedient to God’s commandments.

The following case is quite interesting:

“By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they had been encircled for seven days. By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with those who were disobedient, because she had given a friendly welcome to the spies.” Hebrews 11:30-31 ESV

Contrast this with what James writes:

“And in the same way was not also Rahab the prostitute justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out by another way? For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from works is dead.” James 2:25-26 ESV

Note that what Hebrews calls faith, James describes as the works of faith. I.e., the faith that Rahab exhibited and which pleased God is said to be her very works that resulted in God justifying her!

These next examples are illustrative of faith being faithful to do and carry out God’s will:

“For we through the Spirit, by faith (ek pisteos), are waiting for the hope of righteousness. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith WORKING through love (alla pistis di’ agapes energoumene)… But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness (pistis),” Galatians 5:5-6, 22 New American Standard Bible 1995 (NASB1995)

Here’s another version:

“For through the Spirit, by faith, we ourselves eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness. For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision counts for anything, but only faith WORKING through love. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,” Galatians 5:5-6, 22 ESV

Finally:

“Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.” Galatians 6:7-9 NASB1995

Here, Paul defines justifying faith as active obedience and righteous deeds done in love which results in obtaining everlasting life.

Lord willing, I will have more to say concerning the biblical understanding of what true saving faith actually means in future posts.

It says it to me, thats what Im going by. Isa 45:19,25

19 I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth: I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek ye me in vain: I the Lord speak righteousness, I declare things that are right. Its an imperative to a specific/Justified people, the chosen seed

This says that seeking has a benefit as opposed to none, not that He made them seek.

25 In the Lord shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.

This merely states that *in the Lord* is where this blessing occurs. It doesn't state that God unconditionally put them there or that there was no incentive to be in the Lord.

And it still remains a fact, man by nature doesnt seek after the True God Rom 3:11

11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
Ps 14 2,3

The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.

3 They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

Those verses merely say that none seek, implying that if anyone does seek then God must have done something, ie without God's grace no one would seek the true God, not any seekers are unconditionally predetermined.

So nothing that you say implies unconditional predetemination or irresistible grace.

No One Is Righteous
Rom 3:9 The Entire World Guilty of Sin
¶ What then? Do we have an advantage? Not at all. For we have already charged both Jews and Greeks are all under sin,
Rom 3:10 just as it is written,
“There is no one righteous, not even one;
Rom 3:11 there is no one who understands;
there is no one who seeks God.
Rom 3:12 All have turned aside together; they have become worthless;
There is no one who practices kindness;
there is not even one. [Verses 10–12 are a quotation from Ps 14:1–3]
Rom 3:13 Their throat is an opened grave;
they deceive with their tongues;
the venom of asps is under their lips, [A quotation from Ps 5:9 and Ps 140:3]
Rom 3:14 whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness. [A quotation from Ps 10:7]
Rom 3:15 Their feet are swift to shed blood;
Rom 3:16 destruction and distress are in their paths,
Rom 3:17 and they have not known the way of peace. [Verses 15–17 are a quotation from Isa 59:7–8]
Rom 3:18 The fear of God is not before their eyes.” [A quotation from Ps 36:1]

Rom 3:19 ¶ Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those under the law, in order that every mouth may be closed and the whole world may become accountable to God.
Rom 3:20 For by the works of the law no person will be declared righteous [Literally “all flesh will not be declared righteous”] before him, for through the law comes knowledge of sin.

The Righteousness of God Through Faith
Rom 3:21 Righteousness through Faith Revealed
But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, being testified about by the law and the prophets—
Rom 3:22 that is, the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ [Or “through the faithfulness of Jesus Christ”] to all who believe. For there is no distinction,
Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Rom 3:24 being justified as a gift by his grace, through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus,
Rom 3:25 whom God made publicly available as the mercy seat [Or “as the place of propitiation”] through faith in his blood, for a demonstration of his righteousness, because of the passing over of previously committed sins,
Rom 3:26 in the forbearance of God, for the demonstration of his righteousness in the present time, so that he should be just and the one who justifies the person by faith [Or “by Jesus’ faithfulness”] in Jesus.

o all and on all -- Evidently this expression is designed to be emphatic.
"to all" may denote that this plan of justification has come.
"on all" indicates it is for Jews and Gentiles, that is, all mankind.

dor there is no difference -- - There is no distinction in regard to the way in which all men must be justified. All must be saved, if saved at all, in the same mode, whether Jews or Gentiles, bond or free, rich or poor, learned or ignorant.

for there is no difference -- God shows no partiality between the Jews and Gentiles. There is no difference in the way each becomes justified before God.

Praise Jesus!

Its in the context,

Man by nature doesnt seek God Rom3:11

11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.

I believe in Free Grace salvation. This was certainly the classic view of C. I. Scofield, Lewis Sperry Chafer, and John Nelson Darby. Free Grace teaches that saving faith is the belief in Jesus Christ as the Son of God who died and rose again to pay one’s personal penalty for sin and the one who gives eternal life to all who trust Him and Him alone for it.

This says that seeking has a benefit as opposed to none, not that He made them seek.

Do you believe in Salvation because of the Sovereign Election of Grace?

Man by nature doesnt seek God Rom3:11

11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. God must give a new nature, regeneration, thats Grace

Acts 17:27 (KJV) That they should seek the Lord, if haply they might feel after him, and find him, though he be
*not far* from every one of us:

*Not far* is not the same as *in*, yet they did seek.

The conclusion that reconciles scriptures is that God gives them a divine influence ie prevenient grace sufficient for them to seek God.

If God comes in, then there is the new nature.

The problem, as I see it, you hold to the doctrine of Augustine-NO ECF' prior to Augustine wrote what you believe and certainly not the Scriptures.
