The gifts that most cessationists agree that have fulfilled their purpose is the gifts of prophecy, tongues, miracles and knowledge.

There are other gifts... i think 8 others excluding these that they believe by the bible have not ceased. For eg.. helps.. evangelism.

There were gifts used in the OT that have continued through to the NT that are included in this.

Cessationists often ill define continuationists and vice versa.

Did tongues, knowledge and prophecy and miracles get mentioned less and less as you go chronologically thru the NT? Yes.

Did the apostles have very particular qualifications to be apostles? Yes.

Was there anything that affects the gifts beyond the point of time of the Corinthians? Yes.

The apostles died, the early church was established and the canon completed.

So here are some parts of the Biblical basis for the cessation of the GIFT of tongues, prophecy, knowledge and miracles.

God would surely still do miracles etc..outside of the operation of the gifts of the Spirit because He is God.

He could still cause someone to speak in tongues. .but that would be outside of the GIFT of tongues.

But anyway. This has been thrashed and thrashed.

Tongues as a “Prayer Language”​

(Note: Although the term “prayer language” is not completely accurate, I am using it here because so many people are familiar with it.)

When a Christian receives the Baptism with the Holy Spirit, he (or she) receives the power and ability to speak in tongues (Acts 1:5, Acts 1:8, Acts 2:4) any time he or she wishes (1 Cor 14:14-15). It is a new way for us to speak and to communicate with God (1 Cor 14:2) that goes beyond our natural intellect (1 Cor 14:14). For this reason, many people also call this a “prayer language” even though it can be used for things other than just prayer.

The Bible tells us in several places that we should make use of this ability as often as possible (1 Cor 14:14-15, Eph 6:18, Jude 1:20, etc). It also tells us of many ways that it benefits the person that is doing it. We are specifically told that no one will understand this language. It is meant for communication between you and the Lord.

1 Corinthians 14:2 – For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him ; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

In this post, I am addressing one of the biggest points of confusion that I find when discussing the Baptism with the Holy Spirit with people. Using intellect is the way a believer interprets biblical passages. Beginning with asking God, through the Holy Spirit to illuminate it.

Its gotta be reasonable to be true.

I don't have a problem with people speaking in tongues if it is really from the Holy Spirit. The problem is, I can't tell if it is from the Holy Spirit or not. I read or heard that even the Mormon's speak in tongues. That group added to scripture extra books. Which is why Normal Christian's consider them to be a cult, and not saved.

Personally I'm getting fed up with the whole tongue speaking and healing crowd in Christianity. Some of them are making claims that they are raising the dead, and traveling to places in the spirit. I can't test and see if any of the claims are true or not. But one thing I have heard, that there are people who fake such things.

When something s really of God, I want in. But when people start acting careless and stupid with it, I want nothing to do with it.

If you can't tell, then you need to be taught how to 'tell' what is of God and what is not. It comes with instruction - just as all things having to do with God's people. Only spiritual people understand spiritual things. You're either still a baby, ignorant, or both. But strong meat belongs to those who are of age and know how to discern between good and evil.
Or, you're not born-again because that's when one transits into the spiritual realm. God does not leave His true people comfortless.

You sound like a fatalist , Calvinist . Of course unbelievers can know God as we read in the second half of chapter 1 in Romans and many other places. You have a wrong view of dead. Why did Jesus have to speak in parables to hide truth from those who were already dead ?

Yup - that's what the EARLY Assemblies of God Denomination believed - until they sent missionaries out, believing that they'd be able to "Preach the Gospel" without learning the language of the people.

They immediately got their heinies handed to them, and had to retreat - and attend Language School.

A "Calvinist" is not a fatalist, as you should know by now. Fatalism is about impersonal inevitability, as I told you before. This is very different from God working all things according to the counsel of his own will.

The word of God states, "This is eternal life, to know thee, the only true God...". Are you seriously claiming that unbelievers can know (not merely know about) God and, therefore, have eternal life?

BETTER then "patterns in Scripture" is the Reliable Consistency of TRUTH found in Scripture whereby we can fully trust the Scriptures.

Modern day apostles do not exist today for a true Apostle must be DIRECTLY appointed by the LORD.

The Apostle Paul qualifies for three reasons:
#1 - He lived during the days that Jesus walked the earth and no doubt knew of Him before his conversion.
#2 - The LORD appeared to Paul and appointed him
#3 - This was verified by the Holy Spirit, with the other Apostles and other witnesses = Scripture Itself bearing Witness

'Slain in the spirit' is a man-made doctrine
The Ministry of the Holy Spirit is to convict/convince/encourage/sanctify and to be lead by the Holy Spirit = 100% Everyday Truth

'Cessation of gifts' is a very evil doctrine that DIRECTLY opposes the Holy Scriptures of Truth and God's Will for the saints/believers.

The Holy Spirit led me to quite a few denominations after i was born again and baptized in the Holy Spirit.
i was raised under Roman Catholicism, which i hope you know is evil.
We DO NOT condemn the catholics but only the Vatican and it's false apostles with their corrupt doctrines.

It's Jesus saving you and keeping you by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that maintains your salvation..not your own self effort.

That is the great assurance of salvation.

None of that gets anyone's heart right with Jesus. Salvation is by grace (unmerited favour) through faith in Jesus Christ, not by works, lest anyone should boast.

Give up trying to work for salvation, but don't give up asking God to have mercy upon you and to save an undeserving sinner by his grace.
