The atonement of Christ was limited to a particular set apart people Heb 10:9-10
9 Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Also by His death they are set apart for a life of dedication to God.
The word here for sanctified does mean:
And its the word used here Eph 5:25-26
25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;
26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

- consecrate things to God
- dedicate people to God
