“The Lamb Slain From The Foundation Of The World”

Revelation 13:8

Don Fortner

Though he did not come until after the world had existed for four thousand years, Christ is described as “the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world” because he offered himself to God as a sin-atoning sacrifice for his people from the beginning.

In the prophetic scriptures of the Old Testament Christ was presented as one already sacrificed for us. Other prophetic scriptures speak of things to be done in the future. When the prophets spoke of our Saviour’s incarnation, his exaltation and his second coming, these things were looked upon and spoken of as events to be accomplished in the future. But when the prophets spoke of the sacrificial death of Christ and the atonement of sin by his blood, it was looked upon and spoken of as a thing already accomplished (Psa. 22; 40:6-13; 69:4-10; 20-21; 85:10; Isa. 43:25; 44:22; 53:1-12). Redemption by Christ was not an after thought of God, something he did because the Jews would not “let” Jesus be their king. Far from it! In the mind and purpose of God our redemption by Christ was accomplished in eternity.

All the Old Testament types bear testimony to Christ as the Lamb that had been slain. Beginning with the sacrifice of Abel, God’s saints of old offered the blood of lambs upon the altar by faith. And that faith was based upon the Divine revelation that the only way of acceptance with God is by the blood of “the Lamb slain”. Every type was drawn from the picture given by God’s direct revelation and foreshadowed the coming of the Lamb to be slain.

When Christ is described as “the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world” it is to show us that, from all eternity God regarded Christ as the Lamb who had been slain for his elect. There has always been only one way of salvation: The blood of the Lamb! In the Old Testament God forgave sin and imputed righteousness to believers exactly as he does in the New, upon the basis of Christ’s sacrifice as “the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world” (Rom. 3:24-26). God’s eye of justice always has been and always shall be upon “the Lamb slain”!

Eternal Justification based upon the Suretyship of Christ !

It cant be denied by the adversaries of Truth that Christ was made a Surety for a better Covenant Heb 7:22

By so much was Jesus made a surety of a better testament, which I believe refers to the Everlasting Covenant Heb 13:20

Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant

Now basically a Surety has agreed to take on the debt, liability, payment for another; Now in this a pact is made by the Surety and the Creditor, the Creditor having accepted the Suretyship. Its like a striking of hands, or a hand shake like as here Prov 6:1

My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,

Prov 17:18

A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.

Now once the Creditor approves of this, those whom should incur a debt, a debt the Creditor knows the debtor cannot pay, by pledge of agreement, the Creditor must look for payment of the debt from the Surety and not the debtor, which discharges the debtor.
And so the debtors have been legally discharged or acquitted, justified from having to undergo any legal condemnation of the law, not to receive any meted out justice. Now lets ask ourselves, when did the Son Of God, Jesus actually become the Surety of an better Covenant ? Was it before the world began, or after. Was it before the Cross ? Whenever it was, that's when the debtors, for whom Christ was made Surety, were Justified in the eyes of the Law, from all condemnation they would occur upon themselves ! 10

Also, it should go without saying, to deny eternal justification based upon the Cross in time, is to deny Justification by the Cross in time, they are inseparable. Even though the Cross did not actually occur until 33ad, it by no means subjected God to have to wait until then to acquit His Elect based upon it. Neither did He have to wait until 33 a d to actually charge the sins of His elect upon their Surety Jesus Christ, He very well could have done that before the world began, which doing, acquitted the elect from all the charges they would incur in time, by #1 Their natural head adam, and #2 their own personal individual acts of transgressions after their physical life began in time ! So to deny eternal justification, is to deny Justification by the blood of Christ at anytime !

Eternal Justification is true because Justification by Grace is true Rom 3:24;Titus3:7; and since Grace had been given believers before the world began 2Tim1:9

Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,

Then believers had been Justified by that same Grace before the world began!

No one is justified until after they are saved via the hearing , believing and receiving of the gospel.

[Jesus our Lord] was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.
Romans 4:25

Justification is the act of God whereby He declares believing sinners righteous in Christ on the basis of the finished work of Christ on the cross. Each part of this definition is important, so we must consider it carefully.

Justification is an act, not a process. There are no degrees of justification; each of us believers has the same right standing before God. Also, justification is something done by God, not by us. We cannot justify ourselves before God. Most important, justification does not mean that God makes us righteous, but that He declares us righteous. Justification is a legal matter. God puts the righteousness of Christ on our records in the place of our own sinfulness. And nobody can change these records.

We must not confuse justification and sanctification. Sanctification is the process whereby God makes believers more and more like Christ. Sanctification may change from day to day. Justification never changes. When we trust Christ, God declares us righteous, and that declaration will never be repealed. God looks upon us and deals with us as though we had never sinned at all!
