It's a figurative expression. My Pastor explained the 1C is not to be taken as though you pay homage to God 1st and then go about your day like any non-believer.

Rather, God should be the center of your life, where everything you do revolves around God and your relationship with God. This might be poetically expressed as alpha and omega.
