1- the gospels purpose was that by reading and believing its content regarding the gospel results in
2- you will have life.
life comes after the reading and believing the gospel. life always follows the hearing or reading and believing of the gospel.

John 20:31 (KJV 1900) — 31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
It is written to show how you may gain life.
The idea that you are given life that you might believe and then gain life is absurd.
