The Issue of Limited Atonement

I'm not going to take a stand on whether or not atonement is limited or sufficient for all because I honestly don't know.

I'd just like to hear from non-Calvinists as to how they reconcile their view of atonement with the fact that not all people will be saved. Isn't that, by definition, limited atonement? Or is there another explanation?
Simple

As even the Calvinist Shedd notes

It may be asked: If atonement naturally and necessarily cancels guilt, why does not the vicarious atonement of Christ save all men indiscriminately, as the universalist contends? The substituted suffering of Christ being infinite is equal in value to the personal suffering of all mankind; why then are not all men upon the same footing and in the class of the saved, by virtue of it? The answer is because it is a natural impossibility. Vicarious atonement without faith in it is powerless to save. It is not the making of this atonement, but the trusting in it, that saves the sinner: “By faith are you saved” (Eph. 2:8); “he that believes shall be saved” (Mark 16:16). The making of this atonement merely satisfies the legal claims, and this is all that it does. If it were made but never imputed and appropriated, it would result in no salvation. A substituted satisfaction of justice without an act of trust in it would be useless to sinners. It is as naturally impossible that Christ’s death should save from punishment one who does not confide in it as that a loaf of bread should save from starvation a man who does not eat it. The assertion that because the atonement of Christ is sufficient for all men therefore no men are lost is as absurd as the assertion that because the grain produced in the year 1880 was sufficient to support the life of all men on the globe therefore no men died of starvation during that year. The mere fact that Jesus Christ made satisfaction for human sin, alone and of itself, will save no soul. Christ, conceivably, might have died precisely as he did and his death have been just as valuable for expiatory purposes as it is, but if his death had not been followed with the work of the Holy Spirit and the act of faith on the part of individual men, he would have died in vain.[1]

Here in Hebrews 2:9, the Greek word πάς is used in the absolute sense of everyone, every man, all of man.
But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every (all) man. (Heb 2:9)

Here in Romans 5:17, the Greek word λαμβάνω means to receive what is given, what is offered.
For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ. (Rom 5:17)

Here in Romans 5:18, the same Greek word πάς that is used in Hebrews 2:9 is used in the indefinite sense because no other word is used in connection to give it a definite number. The free gift of justification came upon all man, everyone.
Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. (Rom 5:18)

In summary, the Lord Jesus Christ "tasted death for every man" without exclusion; through which the free gift of justification of life has come to everyone, and those who receive it will reign in life by one, Jesus Christ. Scripturally, to be justified one must receive the free gift first before they can reign in life by Jesus Christ. This coincides with Romans 5:1, "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ" One must believe the Gospel of Jesus Christ that He died for our sins and arose to give us life. The act of believing we are justifed by the shed sinless blood of Jesus Christ is the reception of such.

We believe God that He justified us in His Son's death for our sins; therefore, we are justified!

God Bless
it boils down to them he died for all men who were/are Justified Rom 5:18

I wholly agree with you the Apostle Paul was proclaiming all men were justified to life in the death of the Lord Jesus Christ; for that is the purpose God had sent Him to die for everyone's sin. And that is the Good News from God; that He sent His Son into this world to die for our sins and arose to give us life.
  • "the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all." Isa 53:6
  • "The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." (Joh 1:29)
  • "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved." (Joh 3:16-17)
  • "God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation."
  • "that he (Jesus Christ) by the grace of God should taste death for every man"
  • "And he (Jesus Christ) is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world."
  • "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;" (Rom 3:23-25)
  • "So then as through one trespass, all men were condemned; even so through one act of righteousness, all men were justified to life."

He died for all who have been Justified unto life Rom 5:18

So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. NASB1995

You think you agree, yet you reject limited atonement. All men without exception ae not justified to life. He died only for all that are.

Of course I reject limited atonement! I thought you did too, since you properly quoted from the bible that all men were justified to life...and it is true; all men are justified to life; this is why we preach that Jesus Christ died for OUR sins. God has laid upon Him the sins of us all!

So, when you quote Romans 5:18 you need to declare that you are modifying the authors clear message from "even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon ALL MEN unto[resulted in] justification of life, to "even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon SOME MEN unto[resulted in] justification of life."

You are smart enough to see the contradiction between all men and some men.

The clear message from God is that He has justified everyone in the death of His Son for our sin. Now we must believe Him to receive it, "therefore justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ"

Here are the supporting quotes from the bible in context whereby we know God's message of the forgiveness of sins and justification is truly for all men.
  • "the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all." Isa 53:6
  • "The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." (Joh 1:29)

Okay then you reject Rom 5:18 which indicates He died exclusively for them that it resulted in their Justification of Life Rom 5:18

So then as through one trespass the judgment came unto all men to condemnation; even so through one act of righteousness the free gift came unto all men to justification of life.

Only those who receive the free gift that came upon all men

Romans 5:17 (NASB 2020) — 17 For if by the offense of the one, death reigned through the one, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the One, Jesus Christ.

Okay then you reject Rom 5:18 which indicates He died exclusively for them that it resulted in their Justification of Life Rom 5:18

So then as through one trespass the judgment came unto all men to condemnation; even so through one act of righteousness the free gift came unto all men to justification of life.
Rom 5:18 does more than indicate. It defines the difference between the single act of disobedience of Adam to the single act of righteousness of our Lord Jesus Christ.

So then as through one trespass, all men were condemned; even so through one act of righteousness, all men were justified to life. (Rom 5:18)

The difference between Adam and our Lord is clearly defined by the Apostle Paul.
"as through (Adam's) one trespass, all men were condemned"
"so through (Jesus's) one act of righteousness, all men were justified to life"

The clear comparison is, as Adam's sin condemned all men to death our Lord's righteous act justified all men to life

In your reply you add exclusivity that is not found in the verse. The Apostle Paul was clear "as through one trespass, all men were condemned; even so through one act of righteousness, all men were justified to life". There is zero mentioning or implication of exclusion in the verse.

When you look for exclusivity you must read the preceding verse, "For if by the trespass of the one, death reigned through the one; so much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ."

The Greek word λαμβάνω means to receive what is given, what is offered. IE: Three people are given a writing pen, two refused the pen and one received the pen. I gave all three a pen but only one received. Without exclusion all three were given a pen and yet only one received it. The one who received it benefits from it.

All men are justified to life in the death of Jesus Christ and yet only those who receive it by faith will benefit from it. Romans 4 and 5 is where the Apostle Paul expounds on the topic of justification by faith.

The foundational truth of Romans 4 and 5 is, we believe God that He justified us in His Son's death for our sins; therefore, we are justified!

Those who do not believe God justified them to life in the death and resurrection of Jesus have rejected or refused to receive God's free gift to life and will sadly die in their sins.

I hope you realize there is no exclusivity in Romans 5:18.

God Bless
