Almost every translation has "thwarted". A few have "restrained", "hindered", "stopped". Only a few very poor expanded translations say any different.

Exactly. To them though no purpose means some purposes.

Well, what do you expect? To them, God knows almost everything most of the time, sometimes. God just got incredibly lucky with prophecy that played out exactly as written, like the flat Tyre prophecy (pun intended).
