What is the difference between eternal security, once saved always saved, and perseverance of the saints?

Then why is this in the Bible?

What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? LUKE 15:4
You are adding CONDITIONS. That's what the Pharisees did. Works salvation.

The gift of God is salvation in Jesus Christ (John 11:25–26; 1 John 5:11–12). It is a gift because we can’t earn it, nor do we deserve it (Ephesians 2:8–9). The gift of God is a new life sourced and supplied by the Holy Spirit (John 3:5–8; 6:63; Romans 8:10; 1 Corinthians 15:45; 2 Corinthians 3:6). This gift is for everyone (John 3:16), and it is free (Romans 5:15; 6:23; Revelation 22:17). The apostle Paul said this gracious gift of God is too wonderful for words (2 Corinthians 9:14–15).
Hello,

The gift of salvation is not given to men UNconditionally, only those who obey God's will receive this free gift, (Mt 7:21; Heb 5:9). This is why there is no example in the NT gospel of anyone UNconditionally receiving the gift of salvation while they continued to live in disobedience and defiance to God's will.

Unfortunately, many who have allowed themselves to believe the man-made teaching of faith onlyism refuse to accept the everyday fact that free gifts can and do some with conditions and meeting the conditions upon the free gift does not earn the gift. If the free gift of salvation was given UNconditionally then all would be saved (Tts 2:11) yet the Bible does not teach Universalism. Christ died for every man (Heb 2:9) yet every man will not be saved, why? For every man will not be obedient to Christ (Heb 5:9)

God attached the condition of obedience to His free gift and only those that meet that condition receive the gift.

Bible verses about losing salvation

Many people ask questions like is eternal security biblical? Can Christians lose their salvation? The answer to these questions is that a true believer can never lose their salvation. They are eternally secure. Once saved always saved! It is dangerous when people say we can lose our salvation, which is what Catholicism teaches.

It is dangerous because it is close to saying that we have to work to keep our salvation. Throughout Scripture it talks about a believer’s salvation being eternally secured, but there are still many people who will deny this.

Quote

  • “If we could lose our eternal salvation it wouldn’t be eternal.” @civic
  • “If you could lose your salvation, you would.” – Dr John MacArthur
  • “If a person professes faith in Christ and yet falls away or makes no progress in godliness, it does not mean that he has lost his salvation. It reveals that he was never truly converted.” – Paul Washer

Think about this, why would it be called eternal salvation if you can lose your salvation? If we can lose our salvation, then it wouldn’t be eternal. Is Scripture wrong?

1. 1 John 5:13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

2. John 3:15-16 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

3. John 5:24 I assure you: Anyone who hears My word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life.

It was God’s purpose. Would God go back on His promise? Would God predestine someone to be saved then unsave them? No. God chose you, He will keep you, and He will work in your life until the end to make you more like Christ.

4. Romans 8:28-30 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.

5. Ephesians 1:11-12 In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were the first to put our hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.

6. Ephesians 1:4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will.

What or who can take believers out of the hand of the Lord? What or who can take believers out of the love of God in Jesus Christ? Can our sin? Can our trials? Can death? NO! He saved you and He will keep you! We are not able to keep ourselves, but the Almighty God can and He promised us that He will.

7. John 10:28-30 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.

8. Jude 1:24-25 To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.

9. Romans 8:37-39 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

10. 1 Peter 1:4-5 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

Is Jesus lying? Was Jesus teaching something that is false?

11. John 6:37-40 All those the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all those he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day.

Our eternal salvation is sealed by the Holy Spirit. Is this verse false?

12. Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

So are you saying that you can believe in Christ and live like the devil?

This is what was asked to Paul? Paul made it clear of course not. A true believer does not live in a lifestyle of sin. They are a new creation. They didn’t change themselves God changed them. Christians don’t desire to live in rebellion.

They desire to follow the Lord. Before I was saved I was wicked, but after I was saved I knew nothing about the verses that say we couldn’t willfully sin. I just knew I couldn’t go back to those things. Grace changes you. We don’t obey because it saves us, we obey because we are saved.

13. Romans 6:1-2 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?

14. Romans 6:6 For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.

15. Ephesians 2:8-10 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Grace and eternal security is not a license to sin. In fact, people prove that they are not God’s children when they live in a continuous state of wickedness. Sadly this is most people who profess to be Christian.

16. Jude 1:4 For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.

17. Matthew 7:21-23 Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord! will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of My Father in heaven. On that day many will say to Me, Lord, Lord, didn’t we prophesy in Your name, drive out demons in Your name, and do many miracles in Your name? Then I will announce to them, I never knew you! Depart from Me, you lawbreakers!

18. 1 John 3:8-10 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is the one who does not love his brother.

Jesus’ sheep hear His voice.

19. John 10:26-27 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.

Many people are going to say, “well how about the apostate people who professed to be Christian and then turned away from the faith?”

There is no such thing as a former Christian. Many people are just full of emotion and religion, but they are not saved. Many false converts show signs of fruit for a while, but then they fall away because they were never truly saved to begin with. They went out from us because they were never truly of us.

20. 1 John 2:19 They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.

21. Matthew 13:20-21 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.

Does Hebrews 6 teach that you can lose your salvation?

No! If it was, that would mean that you could lose your salvation and not be able to get it back. You can taste the goodness of the Word and not be saved. This passage is talking about people who are so close to repentance. They know everything and they agree with it, but they never truly embrace Christ.

They never truly repent. They were so close. Picture a cup about to overflow with water, but right before the water starts to overflow someone throws all the water out.

They fall away! Many people see this verse and say, “oh no I can’t be saved.” Let me tell you right now that if you couldn’t be saved you wouldn’t even think about being saved. It wouldn’t even cross your mind.

22. Hebrews 6:4-6 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.

Does 2 Peter 2:20-21 teach that believers can lose their salvation? No!

Hell is going to be more severe for people who knew the most. It is going to be more severe for people who heard the Word of God and the gospel time and time again, but never truly repented. This verse shows that they returned to their old ways and were never truly saved in the first place. They were unregenerate pretenders. In the next verse there is a reference to dogs. Dogs are going to hell. They are just like dogs who return back to their vomit.

23. 2 Peter 2:20-21 If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them.

Now here comes the question can a Christian backslide?

The answer is yes, but a true believer will not remain that way because God is working in them. If they are truly His God will discipline them out of love. They will come to repentance. Did they lose their salvation? No! Can a Christian struggle with sin? The answer is yes, but there is a difference between struggling with sin and diving head first into it. We all struggle with sinful thoughts, desires, and habits.

That is why we must continually confess and forsake our sins. There is growth in the life of a believer. A believer wants to be more and desires to obey. There will be a growing in holiness. We are going to grow in repentance. We are not going to say, “if Jesus is this good I can do whatever” because He who began a good work will finish it. We are going to bear fruit. Examine yourself!

24. Philippians 1:6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.

25. 1 John 1:7-9 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Bonus: He will keep you firm to the end. We are covered by the blood of Jesus Christ forever.

1 Corinthians 1:8-9 He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

When people come to know Christ as their Savior, they are brought into a relationship with God that guarantees their eternal security. Jude 24 declares, “To Him who is able to keep you from falling and to present you before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy.” God’s power is able to keep the believer from falling. It is up to Him, not us, to present us before His glorious presence. Our eternal security is a result of God keeping us, not us maintaining our own salvation.
Hello,

God through Jude explains HOW God is ABLE to keep you from falling. God gave at least 4 admonishments, commands to Christians in the book of Jude:
--ye should earnestly contend for the faith
--remember ye the words which were spoken before of the apostles
--building up yourselves on your most holy faith
--Keep yourselves in the love of God

Jude was warning Christians about false teachers, v4. Those Christians that follow these admonishments of the Lord will not fall away after false teachers. Those that do not heed these can fall and be carried away by false teachers. Throughout the NT Christians are warned about false teachers but there is no need for these warning if it were impossible for Christians fall away to following those false teachers.

Note: God gave the Christian the means to keep from falling, it is now up to the Christian to take what God has given and apply it to his life.... therefore it IS up to the Christian to "maintain his salvation" as you put for God said "keep yourselves in the love of God".... How? By doing what God said to do.

Therefore God being ABLE to keep you from falling has nothing to do with the miraculous or God overriding the free will but it's about God giving the Christian what he needs to keep from falling and the Christian's responsibility in putting to use what God gave him.

Paul did not put the word "alone" in Eph 2:8-9 for Paul never taught such an idea.

Paul taught the need for repentance to be saved, Rom 2:4-5, confession Rom 10:9-10 and baptism Rom 6:3-7. Paul never said belief alone can justify.

Look at what those Romans did to be justified in Rom 6:17-18;
1) the servants of sin
2) obeyed from the heart
3) then freed from sin/justified

They first had to obey BEFORE being justified by God. God just does not UNconditionally justify men while men continue to live in defiance of His will.

Repentance needs to be defined in this conversation and at what point in salvation it actually occurs.

Paul clearly states that we are saved through faith "apart from additions or modifications" not works, hence, faith alone. Faith (rightly understood) in Jesus Christ alone for salvation. (y)
'works' Paul refers to are works of merit one can boast about and NOT obedience....obedience is nothing to boast about per Christ's lesson on obedience in Lk 17:7-10.

How does God save? In the Christian doctrine of salvation, God has rescued us through Christ (John 3:17).

Specifically, it was Jesus’ death on the cross and subsequent resurrection that achieved our salvation (Romans 5:10; Ephesians 1:7).

Scripture is clear that salvation is the gracious, undeserved gift of God (Ephesians 2:5, 8)

and is only available through faith in Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12).

Such folks don't understand the difference between faith that trusts in Jesus Christ alone for salvation (Romans 4:5-6; Ephesians 2:8,9) and faith only-per James 2:24 (empty profession of faith/dead faith that remains "alone" - barren of works. Your logic leads to works salvation. Salvation is a free gift.

John 3:16
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

John 4:10
Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”

Romans 5:15
But the free gift is not like the transgression. For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much more did the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.

Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 8:32
He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?

2 Corinthians 9:15
Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!

Ephesians 2:8
For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God;

What do you mean by "works salvation"? Are you referring to works of merit by 'works'?

I have said over and over salvation by OBEDIENCE not works of merit.....two completely different things.

Again, there is not a single example in the NT gospel of Christ of God UNconditonally saving a person who was continually living in defiance to God's will.

Paul did say "obedience UNTO righteousness" Rom 6:16

There is no such thing as 'disobedience unto righteousness'..such does not even make sense.

'works' Paul refers to are works of merit one can boast about and NOT obedience....obedience is nothing to boast about per Christ's lesson on obedience in Lk 17:7-10.

Rom 6:16 Paul said "obedience UNTO righteousness"

Rom 6:17-18

Any works that we "add" to salvation through faith and the finished work of Christ (Romans 3:24-28; 4:5-6; Ephesians 2:8,9; Titus 3:5; 2 Timothy 1:9) would be works of merit because then these works "in addition to Christ's finished work of redemption" would become the basis or means by which we obtain salvation. Luke 17:7-10 has nothing to do with being saved by your personal definition of non-boastful works.

In regard to Romans 6:16-18, I already thoroughly explained this to you in a different post.

In Romans 6:16, there are only two kinds of servants in this world, in the spiritual sense: servants of sin unto death and servants of obedience unto righteousness. When we believe the gospel by trusting in Christ's finished work of redemption as the ALL-sufficient means of our salvation/place our faith exclusively in Jesus Christ for salvation (Romans 1:16; 3:24-28; 5:1) we then become servants of obedience unto righteousness.

Being slaves of sin is put in the "past tense." Romans 6:18 - You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness.

In regard to Romans 6:17, before they obeyed that form of doctrine by choosing to believe the gospel (Romans 1:16), they had been slaves to sin. Romans 10:16 - But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our report?"

1 Peter 1:22 notice - "Purified your souls in obeying the truth" and notice in Acts 15:9 - "Purified their hearts by faith."

Notice in Romans 10:10 - For with the heart one believes unto righteousness..

Notice in Romans 4:5 - But to him who does not work but believes on Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith (not his works) is accounted for righteousness.

One must first believe Christ and his NT BEFORE repenting for an unbellever cannot repent. All the belief alone in the world can never save those who will not repent.

Repentance means to have a change in heart, in attitude about sinning, to turn from doing unrighteousness to doing righteousness.
Many understand the term repentance to mean “a turning from sin.” Regretting sin and turning from it is related to repentance, but it is not the precise meaning of the word. In the Bible, the word repent means “to change one’s mind.” The Bible also tells us that true repentance will result in a change of actions (Luke 3:8–14; Acts 3:19). In summarizing his ministry, Paul declares, “I preached that they should repent and turn to God and demonstrate their repentance by their deeds” (Acts 26:20). The full biblical definition of repentance is a change of mind that results in a change of action.

What, then, is the connection between repentance and salvation? The book of Acts especially focuses on repentance in regard to salvation (Acts 2:38; 3:19; 11:18; 17:30; 20:21; 26:20). To repent, in relation to salvation, is to change your mind in regard to sin and Jesus Christ. In Peter’s sermon on the day of Pentecost (Acts chapter 2), he concludes with a call for the people to repent (Acts 2:38). Repent from what? Peter is calling the people who rejected Jesus (Acts 2:36) to change their minds about that sin and to change their minds about Christ Himself, recognizing that He is indeed “Lord and Christ” (Acts 2:36). Peter is calling the people to change their minds, to abhor their past rejection of Christ, and to embrace faith in Him as both Messiah and Savior.

Repentance involves recognizing that you have thought wrongly in the past and determining to think rightly in the future. The repentant person has “second thoughts” about the mindset he formerly embraced. There is a change of disposition and a new way of thinking about God, about sin, about holiness, and about doing God’s will. True repentance is prompted by “godly sorrow,” and it “leads to salvation” (2 Corinthians 7:10).

Repentance and faith can be understood as two sides of the same coin. It is impossible to place your faith in Jesus Christ as the Savior without first changing your mind about your sin and about who Jesus is and what He has done. Whether it is repentance from willful rejection or repentance from ignorance or disinterest, it is a change of mind. Biblical repentance, in relation to salvation, is changing your mind from rejection of Christ to faith in Christ.

Repentance is not a work we do to earn salvation. No one can repent and come to God unless God pulls that person to Himself (John 6:44). Repentance is something God gives—it is only possible because of His grace (Acts 5:31; 11:18). No one can repent unless God grants repentance. All of salvation, including repentance and faith, is a result of God drawing us, opening our eyes, and changing our hearts. God’s longsuffering leads us to repentance (2 Peter 3:9), as does His kindness (Romans 2:4).

While repentance is not a work that earns salvation, repentance unto salvation does result in works. It is impossible to truly change your mind without that causing a change in action. In the Bible, repentance results in a change in behavior. That is why John the Baptist called people to “produce fruit in keeping with repentance” (Matthew 3:8). A person who has truly repented of his sin and exercised faith in Christ will give evidence of a changed life (2 Corinthians 5:17; Galatians 5:19–23; James 2:14–26).

To see what repentance looks like in real life, all we need to do is turn to the story of Zacchaeus. Here was a man who cheated and stole and lived lavishly on his ill-gotten gains—until he met Jesus. At that point he had a radical change of mind: “Look, Lord!” said Zacchaeus. “Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount” (Luke 19:8). Jesus happily proclaimed that salvation had come to Zacchaeus’s house, and that even the tax collector was now “a son of Abraham” (verse 9)—a reference to Zacchaeus’s faith. The cheat became a philanthropist; the thief made restitution. That’s repentance, coupled with faith in Christ.

Repentance, properly defined, is necessary for salvation. Biblical repentance is changing your mind about your sin—no longer is sin something to toy with; it is something to be forsaken as we “flee from the coming wrath” (Matthew 3:7). It is also changing your mind about Jesus Christ—no longer is He to be mocked, discounted, or ignored; He is the Savior to be clung to; He is the Lord to be worshiped and adored.

that salvation gift of God is CONDITIONALLY received by those who obey God's will. This is why there is no NT example of anyone in the NT of Christ UNconditionally receivng salvation while CONTINUING to live in defiance of God's will.

Faith is a condition to recieve this gift, NOT faith only......faith and faith only are two totally, completely different things.

Act 10:34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:
Act 10:35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

I believe there is often confusion on how people apply the concept of "faith".

I think we must ask the question.....

Faith in what? I can tell you that the first times I talked of expressing faith in Jesus Christ, I had no idea what that actually meant.

To me, faith included an abandonment of perceived traditions of God to literally embrace God at a very individual level.
