Looking for Jesus according to John

60) Looking for Jesus

John 7:

- Jesus then said: “I will be with you a little while longer before I go to the One who sent me. You will look for me, but you will not find me, and where I am you cannot come.” Therefore, the Jews said among themselves: “Where does this man intend to go, so that we will not find him? He does not intend to go to the Jews dispersed among the Greeks and teach the Greeks, does he? What does he mean when he says, ‘You will look for me, but you will not find me, and where I am you cannot come’?”

- The religious leaders were ignorant!

- They didn’t want to understand Jesus’ message!

- What about us?

- We have the Bible, but if we don’t open it, it won’t help!

- If we just open it when you have time or from time to time, it won’t help!

- Do you think it is different for religious leaders?

- If you don’t do it, the religious leaders won’t do it for you!

- Remember what Jesus said, I will tell them I DON’T KNOW YOU, GO AWAY FROM ME!

61) Looking for Jesus

John 7:

- On the last day, the great day of the festival, Jesus stood up and he called out: “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever puts faith in me, just as the scripture has said: ‘From deep within him streams of living water will flow.’” However, he said this concerning the spirit, which those who put faith in him were about to receive; for as yet there was no spirit, because Jesus had not yet been glorified. Some in the crowd who heard these words began saying: “This really is the Prophet.” Others were saying: “This is Christ.” But some were saying: “The Christ is not coming out of Galilee, is he? Does the scripture not say that the Christ is coming from the offspring of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?”So a division over him arose among the crowd.

- What about you?

- It has always been so!

- It will always be so!

- People can take whatever they want from the Bible or not!

- Some want to know more, others don’t!

- It is in front of you!

- It’s up to you!

- Humility is required!

- There is so much to learn!

- But it requires time and effort!

62) Looking for Jesus

John 7:

- Some of them, though, wanted to seize him, but no one laid his hands on him. Then the officers went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, and the latter said to them: “Why did you not bring him in?”

- Jesus’ mission was not finished!

- It is the same today!

- Jesus will come back at the appropriate time!

- When people are not expecting him!

- As usual!

- That’s why it is necessary to be waiting for him at any time!

- Remember the destruction of Jerusalem!

- Jesus told them but it was necessary to be careful!

- Remember Lot and his wife!

63) Looking for Jesus

John 7:

- The officers replied: “Never has any man spoken like this.”

- Jesus shows us the way!

- God and Jesus need people who are willing to develop their spiritual abilities!

- We must show our differences!

- We must show our sincerity!

- We must show our strong will!

- We must show our spiritual strength!

- It doesn’t mean we are perfect!

- But we must follow God and Jesus and their faithful servants’ examples!

- It is our personal choice!

- What comes next depends on this personal choice!

64) Looking for Jesus

John 7:

- In turn the Pharisees answered: “You have not been misled also, have you? Not one of the rulers or of the Pharisees has put faith in him, has he? But this crowd who do not know the Law are accursed people.” Nicodemus, who had come to him previously and who was one of them, said to them: “Our Law does not judge a man unless it first hears from him and learns what he is doing, does it?” In answer they said to him: “You are not also out of Galilee, are you? Search and see that no prophet is to be raised up out of Galilee.”

- The Pharisees by being arrogant show who they really are!

- Nicodemus tries to do something but he is afraid!

- They are used to frighten others!

- When people speak, when they are arrogant they show who they are and what they really know that is nothing!

- Thanks to the Pharisees and the Jewish religious leaders who “knew everything” Jerusalem was destroyed and many Jews died and suffered!

- And they keep waiting for the Messiah!

- Good luck!

- But do they really believe that!

- Or do they just want to keep their privileges and power as in the past?

- And what about the modern religious leaders?

- Do they not do the same?

- Jesus keeps telling us to go away from them!

65) Looking for Jesus

John 8:

Then Jesus spoke again to them, saying: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will by no means walk in darkness, but will possess the light of life.”

- Man usually prefers darkness like Nicodemus!

- When they choose light, they have it look like darkness!

- It is easier to hide things!

- Because when it is light, lies are indelible or permanent!

- Jesus and light, the religious leaders and darkness!

- On the one hand life and hope, on the other hand death and destruction!

- Everywhere we hear lies!

- God’s word is the truth!

- Truth and reality of man!

- A minority of faithful servants, a majority of unfaithful servants!

- A minority vs majority!

- It makes it more precious like Daniel and Job and Samuel and …!

66) Looking for Jesus

John 8:

- So the Pharisees said to him: “You bear witness about yourself; your witness is not true.” In answer Jesus said to them: “Even if I do bear witness about myself, my witness is true, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I came from and where I am going. You judge according to the flesh; I do not judge any man at all. And yet even if I do judge, my judgment is truthful, because I am not alone, but the Father who sent me is with me. Also, in your own Law it is written: ‘The witness of two men is true.’ I am one who bears witness about myself, and the Father who sent me bears witness about me.” Then they said to him: “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered: “You know neither me nor my Father. If you did know me, you would know my Father also.”

- How many people really read the Bible?

- Who knows?

- Who cares?

- People usually prefer man’s tradition!

- Everything is at hand but it is as if it was inaccessible!

- Jesus was not only an incredible teacher!

- He spent a lot of time curing people!

- They did not want to believe in him because it was against their own interests!

- How many people really know Jesus?

- How many people really know God?

- Look at the situation of the world and the answer is easy!

- When people only think about their own interests the world goes nowhere!

- Only a dead end!

67) Looking for Jesus

John 8:

- He spoke these words in the treasury as he was teaching in the temple. But no one seized him, for his hour had not yet come. So he said to them again: “I am going away, and you will look for me, and yet you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” The Jews then began to say: “He will not kill himself, will he? Because he says, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come.’”

- It is better to work for our own salvation!

- If we count only on men and they lead you to the wrong direction, we must be ready to cry or weep!

- But it will be of no use!

- It is better to do our part and study and share what we learn!

- Once again making mistakes is not a problem if we look for the right way!

- The problem is not doing anything!

- The problem is not looking for!

- Then how do you want God and Jesus to look for us?

- And we must God to help us find the right way!

68) Looking for Jesus

John 8:

- He tells them that they are from below whereas he is from above!

- They are from this world whereas he is not from this world!

- And he adds that they will die in their sins because they don’t believe he is the one!

- And he speaks about his father who sent him and about the things he told him!

- After his death they will know that he is the one and that he does nothing of his own initiative!

- And he keeps doing what pleases his father!

- When Jesus was on earth, he kept doing what he was supposed to do!

- He told people about his Father’s will!

- He told us what to do if we want to be part of God’s Kingdom!

- He never went on the left or on the right!

- He knew why he was there and he was ready to do his job till his death!

- It was a full time job!

- He was not a tourist visiting the earth!

- We must show the same spirit!

69) Looking for Jesus

John 8: Jesus speaks about the Father who taught him!

- And he never abandons himself because he always does the things pleasing to him!

- Jesus is in union with God and we must participate to this union!

- We must follow Jesus’ example!

- We must do the things pleasing to God but not to us or to men!

- The priority must be given to God!

- then in time we will receive his priority!

- And he won’t abandon us to ourselves!

- But we need to have something in common!

- We can’t be strangers!

- We must belong to his family!

- We must learn and talk about God’s word!

- Then we will be remembered!

70) Looking for Jesus

John 8: Jesus told the Jews who had believed him that they would be set free by the truth!

- But they didn’t understand because they were Abraham’s offspring!

- He explained to them that the one sinning is a slave of sin!

- He told them that if they were trying to kill him it was because his words didn’t make progress among them!

- Jesus was offering them God’s word opposed to man’s tradition!

- But they were too attached to man’s tradition!

- It was a load preventing them to listen carefully to Jesus!

- When you always take the same way, you don’t even know where you walk!

- You stop seeing and hearing when you usually see and hear on a road if you pay attention to what is around you!

- Modern life also has many obstacles to be able to do it!

- And it is necessary to open our eyes and ears!

- But do we really want it?

71) Looking for Jesus

John 8: Jesus speaks about the things he has seen while with his Father!

- Think about the strong relationship between a father and his son!

- Think about the quality of the discussion they have when they have a strong relationship!

- Think how difficult it is to have such a quality of discussion between a father and his son!

- Especially in today’s society!

- When parents find it so difficult to speak with their children!

- It is something we should be positively jealous of!

- Think again about Jesus when he was 12 and he wanted to be in the house of his Father!

- It is explosive!

- Unimaginable!

- But such an incredible example and in many areas of life!

72) Looking for Jesus

John 8: Jesus says that the Pharisees do the things they have heard from their father!

- And it is completely different from what Jesus says!

- They say they are Abraham’s children but they don’t do his works!

- And they are trying to kill Jesus which tells a lot about their father!

- Thus God is not their Father!

- But the devil is!

- And they wish for the desires of their father!

- The devil began as a murderer and a liar and he is the father of the liar!

- So they act like him!

- Thus by our actions and sayings we show where we are from and who our father is!

- So we should be careful when we speak about God!

- Because the way we speak makes it clear where we are from!

73) Looking for Jesus

John 8: Jesus tells the Pharisees they are not listening to him because they are not from God because what he says comes from God!

- But they say he is a Samaritan and has a demon!

- They defend their own interests because Jesus speaks about their real nature!

- And of course they can’t accept it because he exposes them!

- And the truth is only good to hear when you behave correctly!

- The best example is when Jesus cures someone in front of them and the only thing they can do is accusing him of not respecting the Sabbath!

- It is such evidence of their real nature and the fact that they belong to the devil!

- But they just play a game!

- But it is easy to see it with a bit of good judgment!

- Or it should be easy!

  1. About John 1:1

  • As I always hear the same song about John 1:1 and I am tired of hearing it again and again, I am going to have a look at the use of the definite article or not in the book of John!
  • When I look at the translations of John 1:1 in Biblehub, they all say and the Word was God!
  • Now before starting, I am going to repeat that in Ancient Greek, you only get the definite article!
  • When there is no definite article, it corresponds to the indefinite article!
  • So let’s start with John 1:1 I am going to put into pieces!

  • In
Ἐν (En)
Preposition
Strong's 1722: In, on, among. A primary preposition denoting position, and instrumentality, i.e. A relation of rest; 'in, ' at, on, by, etc.

  • [the] beginning
ἀρχῇ (archē)
Noun - Dative Feminine Singular
Strong's 746: From archomai; a commencement, or chief.
  • So here in Greek we don’t have the definite article but we have a preposition followed by a noun (in (the) beginning)

  • was
ἦν (ēn)
Verb - Imperfect Indicative Active - 3rd Person Singular
Strong's 1510: I am, exist. The first person singular present indicative; a prolonged form of a primary and defective verb; I exist.

Noun - Nominative Masculine Singular
Strong's 3056: From lego; something said; by implication, a topic, also reasoning or
