Isaiah 53:5 The chastisement of our peace was upon Him

The Hebrew word מוּסָר mûsâr (moo-sawr) is used in Isa 53:5 and means chastisement, which in Hebrew means instruction, training, correction given by parents upon their children to perfect-to complete them. Chastisement includes learning by suffering. One can chasten his son by causing him to suffer to one degree or another with the purpose to teach him something that he might otherwise not learn. This is called discipline as well.

Now that Isa 53:5 has been fulfilled, we know God told man ahead of time He would perfect His Son to be the Author of Salvation through the sufferings that brought us peace with Him. Our Lord's real experiences of humbling Himself to come into our form and living in our human weakness, suffering and giving up His life unto death on account of our sins is what purifies us of our sins and reconciled-restored our relationship to God.

Here we are informed that God made our Lord, the Author of our salvation "perfect" through suffering.
"For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the Author of their salvation perfect through suffering." (Heb 2:10)

Again, we are informed that our Lord "learned obedience through what He suffered", and was "made perfect" by it, becoming the source of salvation.
"In the days of his flesh, Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears, to him who was able to save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverence. Although he was a son, he learned obedience through what he suffered. And being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey him, being designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek." (Heb 5:7-10)

Here we are informed the oath of God "appoints a Son forever who has been perfected".
"For such a high priest was fitting for us: holy, guiltless, undefiled, separated from sinners, and made higher than the heavens; who doesn’t need, like those high priests, to offer up sacrifices daily, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. For he did this once for all, when he offered up himself. For the law appoints men as high priests who have weakness, but the word of the oath which came after the law appoints a Son forever who has been perfected." (Heb 7:26-28)

The Hebrew understanding of chastisement does not mean penal punishment like us westerners have been led to think. It means instruction, training, or correction to perfect a person, to make them complete.

The suffering and death that Jesus our Lord experienced taught Him in all ways what it was to be in the weakness of humanity, so that He could fully sympathize with us; this being what He learned that qualifies Him to be "the source of eternal salvation for all who obey Him". This chastisement-being perfected through suffering-was upon Him for our peace, for our sakes ulitmately.

God Bless

Excellent Joe you are on fire and your double edge sword is sharp and being used mightily to proclaim Christ. I'm always blessed reading your insight into the scriptures as you bring glory to our Savior. Amen brother.

Jesus didn't need a spanking.

He was punished for our sins.
by man not God.

Acts 2:23
this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.

Acts 2:36
“Therefore, let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Messiah.”

Acts 4:10- Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole…

Acts 5:30- The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree

Matthew 16:21
From that time on Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and that He must be killed and on the third day be raised to life

Matthew 20:18-19
“We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will deliver Him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. And on the third day He will be raised to life."

Matthew 27:1- When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:

Matthew 27:35- When they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments by casting lots.

Mark 15:24- And they crucified Him. They also divided His garments by casting lots to decide what each of them would take

hope this helps !!!

Brother, please do not use our Lord contemptuously.

He was punished for our sins.
Then you need to use the bible in context to prove it because it clearly states otherwise.

The word punish is used one time in the NT. (Acts 4:21)
The word punished is used four times in the NT. (Acts 22:5, Acts 26:11, 2Th 1:9, 2Pe 2:9)
The word punishment is used four times in the NT. (Matt 25:46, 2Cor 2:6, Heb 10:29, 1 Pe 2:14)
The word wrath is used 38 times in the NT (not one time was it used towards our Lord)

Not one time are any of these words used towards our Lord, not once.

And the Hebrew word mûsâr (moo-sawr) is not the go to word for penal punishment. None of the writers of the bible stated or implied that Jesus was punished for our sins. Therefore, it is clear that He was not punished otherwise that would be clearly stated, not "learned obedience through what He suffered" and "was made perfect"; which these two statements clearly fulfill the usage of mûsâr.

The theme that we read over and over is our Lord secured eternal redemption by the offering of Himself. He is our Redeemer who purchased us with His own life in obedience and love to His Father and love to us; that single act of righteousness is what justifies all men (Rom 5:18).

We are saved by one man's love and obedience; obedience that He learned through suffering [mûsâr, chastisement] and was perfected [by mûsâr, chastisement] to be the Author of our salvation.

As prophesied, "the chastisement of our peace was upon him".

God Bless

Addressing the OP, On Point. may we add also here In Isaiah 53. "Divine Justice", he was crucified, for our sins that are past.

Isaiah 53:4 "Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted."
Stricken: is another word for smitten, meaning nailed, as with smitten, to strike.

Isaiah 53:5 "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."

Wounded: H2490 חָלַל chalal (chaw-lal') v.
1. (properly) to bore.
Bore: verb "To make a hole" means, stab, pierce, spear,

Bruised: Crucify, https://www.wordhippo.com/what-is/another-word-for/bruise.html#C0-10
also, another word for smitten, meaning nailed.

are we getting a picture? just as in Zechariah 12:10 "And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn."

God's own ARM in flesh is GOD HIMSEL, the ECHAD, or the EQUAL SHARE of God himself, per Isaiah 63:5.

Isa 53:2 . .He hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is
no beauty that we should desire him.

Quite a few of the artistic representations of Jesus' face that I've seen depict him as
a rather attractive man but according to the Bible, he wasn't.

Isa 53:3 . . He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted
with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we
esteemed him not.

My youngest brother was a chick magnet growing up, and very popular in school
amongst both the boys and the girls. He was admired and had lots of friends; but
apparently Jesus wasn't so fortunate. He was more or less one of the nobody's in
his community
rather than a stand-out, and his peers tended to ignore him.

Isa 53:4 . . Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did
esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

Like Job's friends-- who were positive the old boy deserved what he got --the folks
in Jesus' community assumed his medical conditions attested he was a bad man.

People really couldn't tell just by looking at him that Jesus was somebody special.
In point of fact, his own cousin John the baptist had no clue that Jesus was the man
for whom God sent him to pave the way. (John 1:29-33)

All in all, Jesus didn't fit the picture of God's choice for a man destined to be the supreme
of all prophets; not even close, so it's no wonder folks that knew him were astounded to
be told he was "the one". (Matt 13:54-57 & Luke 4:16-29)

Much like Jobs friends who blamed God for His situation when all along it was the devil causing his suffering. The same with Jesus and those who blame God for His suffering when it was done by wicked men as Jesus said it would be done by the Jewish leaders and not by God.

We (not God ) considered Him smitten/afflicted by/of God. There are lots of misnomers about this in Christendom.

hope this helps !!!

You would think Arminianians wouldn't treat the Atonement like Calvinists treat predestination.

By men. Was God holding the "rod" that beat the back of Christ?
Yes by men and not God as we read from all these scriptures below.

Matthew 16:21-From that time on Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and that He must be killed and on the third day be raised to life

Matthew 17:23- They will kill Him, and on the third day He will be raised to life." And the disciples were deeply grieved.

Matthew 20:18-19 -“We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will deliver Him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified.

Matthew 26:66- What do you think?” “He is worthy of death,” they answered.

Matthew 27:1
- When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:

Matthew 27:35- When they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments by casting lots.

Mark 8:31- And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

Mark 10:33- “We are going up to Jerusalem,” he said, “and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles,

Mark 14:64- Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.

Mark 15:24
- And they crucified Him. They also divided His garments by casting lots to decide what each of them would take

John 19:7- We have a law," answered the Jews, "and according to that law He must die, because He declared Himself to be the Son of God."

Acts 2:23 This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross

Acts 4:10,11 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole…

Acts 5:30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom ye slew and hanged on a tree.

Acts 7:52 Was there ever a prophet your ancestorsdid not persecute? They even killed those who predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and murdered him

Acts 13:27
For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him

1 Corinthians 2:8
- None of the rulers of this ageunderstood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory

And Jesus drives the point home as to who was behind His death, murder, killing, persecution and suffering.

John 8:39-44
If you were Abraham’s children,” said Jesus, “then you would do what Abraham did. 40 As it is, you are looking for a way to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things. 41 You are doing the works of your own father.” ( not God the Father- emphasis mine )

“We are not illegitimate children,” they protested. “The only Father we have is God himself.”

42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I have come here from God. I have not come on my own; God sent me. 43 Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. 44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.

whom they pierced was God. for he, God, shed his own blood for the sins of HIS PEOPLE. Acts 20:28 "Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood."

I've read the Scriptures. I don't see God with the hammer nor God with the spear......

You need to realize that the Incarnation is all about God (In Christ) joining in the experience of humanity.

We see Christ throughout His life gradually experience all that it means to be human. As He faced the Cross you find Him submitting to humanity when He speaks of the shame He must face. Submitting to the government. The rulers of this world in the manner of death He must face. Submitting to MEN....... It is why Jesus was Crucified instead of stoned to death.

Just as we experience ourselves. Submitting to governance and trials none of us want to face. Evils that come from this world's governmental systems and

Eph_6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.

Christ SUBMITTED to this.

Don't make this about God's supposed actions in "killing Christ". God's actions was SUBMISSION.

It is why Jesus was Crucified instead of stoned to death.

Oh now we see your concerns.
Isaiah 53:5 "But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed."

LOL, LOL, LOL, ,,,,, Oh my you didn't see God with a Hammer, or spear. question, can you see God at all? even with a hammer or a spear? how IGNORANT one can be. God can use Roman hands as well as he can use a fly, or a whole sea to accomplish his will.
Example, 2 Kings 6:18 "And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the LORD, and said, Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha." well what did the LORD use to blind those people? did he used a spear there and gouge their eyes out? or the writing on the wall with his finger, or when Daniel was in the Lion den. what did God used to close shut the Lions mouth? I hope no one is that silly. God can do anything he wants with what or who he want to do it with.

so, this tells 101G you do not understand Isaiah chapter 53 ........ it's the ECHAD in plain sight..... My God.

101G.

which scripture did U read?

All of them. Do you have a manuscript you prefer or are you accepting a collection you haven't vetted yourself. I decided a long time ago to know the difference.

ok, tell us how God was in Christ. was he in Christ at the birth or at the baptism? I'll be looking for your answer.

101G.

If I understand your question correctly.....

Christ is God Incarnate. So the answer is Christ is Eternal. Jesus was born of the seed of Eve in Mary.

Not in your words. That is why I pointed out that there is no appeal to God holding the spear nor hammer. That is all you. No need to laugh. Are you uncomfortable dealing with this?

even with a hammer or a spear? how IGNORANT one can be. God can use Roman hands as well as he can use a fly, or a whole sea to accomplish his will.

Okay. That doesn't mean that HE DID. That is simply imagination.

It is a little implausible to compare God actually BLINDING people to Roman soldiers with a hammer and a spear. Do you not see the difference?

so, this tells 101G you do not understand Isaiah chapter 53 ........ it's the ECHAD in plain sight..... My God.

101G.

Since you dispute Isaiah 53 let's look a little deeper.....

Isa 50:6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.
Isa 50:7 For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed. .... Hebrew source (at least that what is claimed. The sources are so similar, it is difficult for anyone to make that claim.... but here it is....)

Greek

Isa 50:6 My back I have given to the whip, and my jaws for the slaps and my face I did not turn from the shame of ones spitting.
Isa 50:7 And the Lord God was my helper; wherefore I was not ashamed, but I set my face as a solid rock; and I knew that in no way should I be ashamed,

Where is God here in the suffering of Jesus Christ?
