Excellent Discussion on OSAS

Why would I give the context for your proof texts.

Proof-texting is the practice of using isolated verses from a text, particularly the Bible, to support a particular viewpoint or argument without considering the broader context or the original author's intent.
So in other words, if I... in order to prove my belief in Jesus as the savior... were to use Mathew 1: 21She will give birth to a Son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus because He will save His people from their sins.”

I should give the entire context of how Mary would become pregnant from verse ...18This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: right through what was suggested about Mary remaining a virgin, or not verse ... 25But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a Son. And he gave Him the name Jesus.

Even though the discussion is whether or not Jesus was born the savior.

OR not even about verse 23 “Behold, the virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son,
and they will call Him Immanuel” (which means, “God with us”).

Which is appropriate for anther topic but not of Jesus as savior.

Sometime it is prudent to use selective verses, because they make the specific point and dont allow others to say something
in opposition to what the actual verse says

It's often criticized as a misleading or inaccurate method of interpretation, potentially leading to misinterpretations and false conclusions

You make personal statements a lot.
Everyone on any forum tends to do that. Period.

Here is the reply to the above in a nutshell....
A reply that you deny even though many, many verses prove you to be incorrect in your belief system.
Here is my belief system in a nutshell and it's not incorrect. Ephesians 2:8 - For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.
We are saved BY FAITH ALONE.
No amount of works can save us because it is our faith that saves us.
A person can do all the good works they can...IF they DO NOT believe in God they cannot be saved.
True. We are saved BY FAITH ALONE (Romans 4:5-6; Ephesians 2:8,9) yet you have previously made statements that contradict this. You have stated - Only one verse in all the bible about FAITH ALONE....and it states that FAITH ALONE is dead and useless... Yes....we are required to do acts of obedience/works which FOLLOW believing in the Son and THESE works/obedience are the MEANS by which we receive eternal life. You have also stated before that works maintain our salvation. That's not saved BY FAITH ALONE. That's saved BY WORKS. You have the wrong motivation for doing good works. You want credit for salvation.
Hebrews 11:6
6 And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
Amen!
Now here comes the part you do NOT like....
I don't like a works-based false gospel, but I have no problem with obeying God. It is our duty as Christians. (Luke 17:10) Good works glorify our Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16) and good works are also profitable to men. (Titus 3:8) We are saved FOR good works and not by good works. (Ephesians 2:8-10) That's the part you do NOT like because apparently you want to boast in yourself.
AFTER we are saved we are required to obey God.
There is a difference between obeying God/doing God's will in order to become saved (John 6:40) and obeying God/doing God's will after we have been saved. (1 Thessalonians 5:14-18) Your idea of "required" and "must" obey God always seems to end up culminating in salvation by works.
Those that are not saved do not need to obey God.
Yet they go through the motions of trying to obey God anyway. Many folks who are "religious, but not right with God" set out to obey God with self-righteous intentions. Moral self-reformation is not a substitute for regeneration.
They are already lost and a person cannot be more lost than lost.
Yet many lost folks who trust in works for salvation and not in Jesus Christ alone are convinced they were saved and will be shocked to hear Jesus tell them, "I never knew you." (Matthew 7:22-23)
WE as God believers must obey God.
Must is a strong word. Have you flawlessly obeyed God 100% of the time? Are you sinless? Then you have not truly obeyed God. We are to obey God as Christians for the right reasons and with the right motivation. Apparently, these many people in Matthew 7:22-23 and this Pharisee in Luke 18:9-14 thought they were obeying God, but they were deceived. The tax collector in the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector who did not trust in himself that he was righteous and would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ was not deceived. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
In order to obey God, we must do what Jesus instructed us to do.

Jesus instructed us to do GOOD WORKS.
THIS is what He preached for over 3 years with the Apostles.
Yes, and this is what we are saved FOR but NOT BY. (Ephesians 2:8-10) You still have not figured this out.
Jesus preached good behavior.
Jesus wants HIS Kingdom on earth to be a meter for a better life here.
He taught that our BEHAVIOR must change.
As new creations in Christ Jesus, our behavior will change. (2 Corinthians 5:17) Old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Praise God! Obedience is not forced or legalistic for those who are born of God. (1 John 3:7-10)
That includes doing good works and behaving differently than non-believers.

THIS is what JESUS taught.
Of course. And? Is that what you are trusting in for salvation? Doing good works and your best efforts to behave differently? Is that salvation through faith or salvation by works? These are rhetorical questions.

YOU brought up context.

If you're unable to do what you speak of...
then don't speak it.

Your last line, and any other personal statement, is irrelevant to this thread and to me.
once again.

don;t be a hypocrite. I gave you tons of verses and asked you to resolve the conflict. even in context. and you have refused to do it

so don't judge others when they do the same to you.

Why would I give the context for your proof texts.

Proof-texting is the practice of using isolated verses from a text, particularly the Bible, to support a particular viewpoint or argument without considering the broader context or the original author's intent.

It's often criticized as a misleading or inaccurate method of interpretation, potentially leading to misinterpretations and false conclusions

You make personal statements a lot.
another sign.. when they do this. there is normally something causing it

Here's why Bronson:

I posted verses supporting my statement that it's necessary for believers to obey God.

YOU stated that my verses were out of context with the rest of the particular chapter.
In this case it is YOU that must show me WHY I'm incorrect in believing that my verses are out of context...
since I clearly believe that they are.

THIS is how it works Bronson.
Not my responsibility if you do not understand how a debate works.

How do YOU prove what you believe is correct?
Could YOU post something, as you believe fit, to show that good works are not necessary for salvation?
Please show me how it's done.
Thanks.
once again

practice what you preach.

Don't demand @Bronson to do something you have multiple times refused to do yourself

here I will try one more time

1. Show me how I misinterpret these verses.
2. Resolve the contradiction which is readily appearent with all the verses you give and these verses.

John 1: 12. But AS MANY AS HAVE RECIEVED HIM, to THEM he gave the right to become children, even TO THEM WHO BELIEVE (no works)

John 3, FOR God so loved the world he gave his only son that WHOEVER BELIEVES (trusts) in him will NEVER PERISH, and LIVE FOREVER (eternal life) for the son was not sent to judge, but that the world might be saved, he who BELIEVES is NOT CONDEMNED, he who does not believe is condemned already (no works)

John 4: 13 Jesus answered and said to her, “Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, 14 but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will NEVER THIRST. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into EVERLASTING LIFE” (no works)

John 5: 24 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he whoever HEARS MY WORD and BELIEVES IN HIM WHO SENT ME who sent Me HAS ETERNAL LIFE and SHALL NOT COME INTO JUDGMENT but HAS PASSED FROM DEATH TO LIFE (No works)

John 6: 35 And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. HE WHO COMES TO ME shall NEVER HUNGER and he who BELIEVES IN ME shall NEVER THIRST (NO WORKS)

John 6: 37: and THE ONE WHO COMES TO ME I WILL BY NO MEANS CAST OUT 38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. 39 This is the will of the Father who sent Me, thatof all He has given Me I SHAL LOSE NOTHING, but SHOULD RAISE IT UP ON THE LAST DAY. 40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that EVERYONE WHO SEES AND BELIEVES IN HIM MAY HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE AND I WILL (NOT MIGHT) RAISE HIM ON THE LAST DAY (NO WORKS)

John 6: 47 Most assuredly, I say to you, HE WHO BELIEVES IN ME HAS EVERLASTING LIFE. 48 I am the bread of life. 49 Your fathers ate the manna in the wilderness, and are dead. 50 This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that THAT ONE MAY EAT OF IT AND NOT DIE 51 am the living bread which came down from heaven. IF ANYONE EATS THIS BREAD HE WILL LIVE FOREVER (NO WORKS)

John 6: 63 It is the SPIRIT WHO GIVES LIFE ; the flesh profits nothing. THE WORDS THAT I SPEAK to you ARE SPIRIT AND THEY ARE LIFE (SIGNIFYING THE BREAD FROM HEAVEN, THE FLESH AND BOOD ARE THE WORDS JESUS SPOKE. NOT THE PHYSICAL FOOD OR WORKS,)

EPH 1: 13 In Him YOU ALSO TRUSTED , after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also ,HAVING BELIEVED YOU WERE SEALED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT OF PROMISE 14 who IS THE GAURANTEE OF OUR INHERITANCE until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

THE INHERITANCE HE SAID WE ALREADY HAD IN THE 1ST 12 VERSES. (AGAIN, NO WORKS)

eph 2: 4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses,MADE US ALIVE together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), 6 and RAISED US UP TOGETHER , and MADE US SIT TOGETHER IN HEAVENLY PLACES 7 that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8 For BY GRACE YOU HAVE BEEN SAVED (A COMPLETED ACTION) THROUGH FAITH , (AS MANY AS HAVE RECIEVED) and that NOT OF YOURSELVES ; it IS THE GIFT OF GOD, 9 NOT OF WORKS LEST ANYONE SHOULD BOAST (NO WORKS)

rom 4: 3 For what does the Scripture say? “ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD AND HE ACOUNTED IT TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS.” 4 Now TO HIM WHO WORKS, THE WAGES ARE NOT COUNTED AS GRACE BUT DEBT (Works cancels out grace. and makes it a wage) 5 But TO HIM WHO DOES NOT WORK but BELIEVES ON HIM WHO JUSTIFIES THE UNGOLDY , his HIS FAITH IS ACCOUNTED FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS (AGAIN NO WORKS. PERIOD)

rom 4: 16 Therefore IT IF OF FAITH THAT IT MAY BE ACCORDING TO GRACE , so that THE PROMISE MAY BE SURE TO ALL THE SEED not only to those who are of the law, but also TO THOSE WHO ARE OF THE FAITH OF ABRAHAM , who is the father of us all (AGAIN, NO WORKS, IT IS OF GRACE THROUGH FAITH)

Rom 4: 23 Now it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him, 24 but ALSO FOR US, IT SHALL BE IMPUTED TO US WHO BELIEVE IN HIM WHO RAISED UP JESUS OUR LORD FROM THE DEAD , 25 who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was RAISED BECAUSE OF OUR JUSTIFICATION (AGAIN NO WORKS)

Rom 11: 6 And IF BY GRACE, THAN IT IS NO LONGER OF WORKS, ; otherwise GRACE IS NO LONGER GRACE.But IF IT IS OF WORKS, THEN IT IS NO LONGER OF GRACE. OTHERWISE WORK IS NO LONGER WORK (AS i HAVE SAID NUMEROUS TIME, GRACE + WORKS = WORKS.. GRACE AND WORKS CAN NOT MIX IN THE AREA OF SALVATION. ITS LIKE MIXING OIL AND WATER)

2 Tim 1: 9 who HAS SAVED US (A COMPLETED ACTION) and called us with a holy calling, NOT ACCORDING TO OUR WORKS , but ACCORDING TO HIS OWN PURPOSE AND GRACE which was GIVEN TO US in Christ Jesus BEFORE TIME BEGAN (AGAIN, NO WORKS. BUT GRACE)

Titus 3: 4 But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, 5 NOT BY WORKS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS (GOOD DEEDS) WHICH WE HAVE DONE , but ACCORDING TO HIS MERCY HE SAVED USthrough the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 that HAVING BEEN JUSTIFIED BY HIS GRACE we should become HEIRS ACCORDING TO THE HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE
(AGAIN, NO QUESTION HERE. PAUL LEAVES NO QUESTION. NO GOOD DEED CAN SAVE US,. WE ARE SAVED BY GODS MERCY, AND GIVEN THE HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE. WHICH IS PROMISED BEFORE TIME BEGAN

Titus 1: 2
in HOPE OF ETERNAL LIFE which GOD WHO CAN NOT LIE PROMISED BEFORE TIME BEGAN

Welcome @Neil Spargo to this Forum where we have people from many Christian backgrounds and denominations, and everyones' beliefs are challenged daily.

First of all, don't you ever wonder why the only Faith Only verse in the entire Bible actually obliterates the Faith Only belief? See James 2:24.
It is faith only. The works just stand to validate that the faith actually exists. If one says they believe in something, but all their actions are of someone who doesn't believe that, that is, if their actions are contrary to their words, then they lied. Those words are empty, dead.
James 2:24-26:
24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.
25 Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?
26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Second of all, Paul associates good works with eternal life. See Rom 2:7.
"7 to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life;"

Read that verses again, you don't even need context. "who by perseverance" are the key words. So by perseverance in their actions the SEEK glory, honor, and immortality. In other words, these are not the end all, but describe the person who is a true believer. When read in context, it becomes even more clear:
"5 But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who will repay to each according to his works: 7 to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; 8 but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and anger."

So, a true believer who seeks to obey God and His commands, we already know they get eternal life, and Paul in Ephesians 1 says they already have eternal life. The Holy Spirit is the guarantee, the down payment of the inheritance until we take material possession of it. It is like when God creditted Abraham's faith as righteousness. Not his works, but his faith. His faith was validated by his works in that he was willingly, whole heart and mind, ready to sacrifice Isaac. Why? He believed God's promise, which means God would have to resurrect Isaac.

God cashed out Abraham's faith at the cross, and Abraham received Christ's righteousness, as do all believers.

Good works are not attributed to eternal life, but to those who by faith receive eternal life. John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him might not perish, but have everlasting life." Those who believe in Christ in full faith, which is validated by their works, are the ones who have eternal life. Those who persevere in the good works show that that faith is true.
Rom 2:6-8:
6 who will repay everyone according to his works:
7 eternal life to those who seek glory, honor, and immortality through perseverance in good works,
8 but wrath and fury to those who selfishly disobey the truth and obey wickedness.

Third of all, be careful not to conflate works of the Law with good works. Our ancestors gave up the works of Law practice 2000 years ago.
But the works of the Law are good works. Going against the law is sin. Read Galatians. Paul tells them that good works are not the way to go, as the works of the Law (good works) lead to death. Why? You have to follow the Law perfectly. Slip up once, and you violated all of the Law. If you believe in good works being our salvation, the moment you sin even once...oops. You already have a list. You're done. Let me tell you what Jesus did... for you.
Fourth of all, receiving a gift still needs actions on our part. We have to acknowledge it, unwrap it, make use of it, take care of it, etc... The same way there are actions required of our salvation like repenting, trusting, and believing. Monergism is false. In other words, God does not repent for you, you do.
You have the wrong view of salvation. Let's present your scenario. You stand before Jesus as judge on the last day. You present your good works, look at what I did in your name. I prophesied, performed miracles, and even the demons obeyed. Wow. Now that is a lot of good works, the best, in His name. What does Jesus say? GET OUT!!! Go away, for I have never known you. Those good works meant nothing, for they did not have faith or belief. The truth of their words/belief are validated/backed up by their actions/works.

What good is repentance if God doesn't want to hear it? It is against God that is our offense. Hebrews says that Esau never found repentance, even though he diligently sought it out with tears. Salvation is monergistice, while sanctification is synergistic. Sanctification does not save.

That isn't what Paul said. Which means, it isn't what God said. (Bible being inspired and all). Is this really the hill you want to die on?
Thats exactly what Paul wrote right here in Eph 2:8

8 For by grace are ye saved through[the] faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Again Faith has the definite article in the original, so its not the sinners faith. Both Grace and Faith are feminine and have the definite article, the emphasis is the Faith comes with the Grace the all the Gift of God.

Then in Acts 18:27 Paul wrote "them which believed through [because of] Grace

And when he was disposed to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him: who, when he was come, helped them much which had believed through grace:

This is consistent bible teaching on the origin of Faith, believing.

It is faith only. The works just stand to validate that the faith actually exists. If one says they believe in something, but all their actions are of someone who doesn't believe that, that is, if their actions are contrary to their words, then they lied. Those words are empty, dead.
Faith without works is dead. "Faith Only" is dead. Can "Faith Only" save us? No, it's dead D E A D dead.

26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Those who believe in Christ in full faith, which is validated by their works, are the ones who have eternal life. Those who persevere in the good works show that that faith is true.
Eternal life is given to those who persevere in faithfully doing good works (Rom 2:7).

7 eternal life to those who seek glory, honor, and immortality through perseverance in good works,
But the works of the Law are good works. Going against the law is sin. Read Galatians. Paul tells them that good works are not the way to go, as the works of the Law (good works) lead to death. Why? Nobody around here follows the works of the Law. My ancestors gave up that practice 2000 years ago. So stop with the strawmen.
You have the wrong view of salvation. Let's present your scenario. You stand before Jesus as judge on the last day. You present your good works, look at what I did in your name. Who said that he "prophesied, performed miracles, and even the demons obeyed"??? I didn't. All I said that I trusted Christ, believed in Christ, and repented of my sins. Why is that so wrong for you? Who else is going to repent for your sins? God does not repent for you, you do. Monergism is dead wrong.
