Welcome
@Neil Spargo to this Forum where we have people from many Christian backgrounds and denominations, and everyones' beliefs are challenged daily.
First of all, don't you ever wonder why the only Faith Only verse in the entire Bible actually obliterates the Faith Only belief? See James 2:24.
It is faith only. The works just stand to validate that the faith actually exists. If one says they believe in something, but all their actions are of someone who doesn't believe that, that is, if their actions are contrary to their words, then they lied. Those words are empty, dead.
James 2:24-26:
24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.
25 Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?
26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
Second of all, Paul associates good works with eternal life. See Rom 2:7.
"7 to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life;"
Read that verses again, you don't even need context. "who by perseverance" are the key words. So by perseverance in their actions the SEEK glory, honor, and immortality. In other words, these are not the end all, but describe the person who is a true believer. When read in context, it becomes even more clear:
"5 But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6 who will repay to each according to his works: 7 to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life; 8 but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and anger
."
So, a true believer who seeks to obey God and His commands, we already know they get eternal life, and Paul in Ephesians 1 says they already have eternal life. The Holy Spirit is the guarantee, the down payment of the inheritance until we take material possession of it. It is like when God creditted Abraham's faith as righteousness. Not his works, but his faith. His faith was validated by his works in that he was willingly, whole heart and mind, ready to sacrifice Isaac. Why? He believed God's promise, which means God would have to resurrect Isaac.
God cashed out Abraham's faith at the cross, and Abraham received Christ's righteousness, as do all believers.
Good works are not attributed to eternal life, but to those who by faith receive eternal life. John 3:16 - "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him might not perish, but have everlasting life." Those who believe in Christ in full faith, which is validated by their works, are the ones who have eternal life. Those who persevere in the good works show that that faith is true.
Rom 2:6-8:
6 who will repay everyone according to his works:
7 eternal life to those who seek glory, honor, and immortality through perseverance in good works,
8 but wrath and fury to those who selfishly disobey the truth and obey wickedness.
Third of all, be careful not to conflate works of the Law with good works. Our ancestors gave up the works of Law practice 2000 years ago.
But the works of the Law are good works. Going against the law is sin. Read Galatians. Paul tells them that good works are not the way to go, as the works of the Law (good works) lead to death. Why? You have to follow the Law perfectly. Slip up once, and you violated all of the Law. If you believe in good works being our salvation, the moment you sin even once...oops. You already have a list. You're done. Let me tell you what Jesus did... for you.
Fourth of all, receiving a gift still needs actions on our part. We have to acknowledge it, unwrap it, make use of it, take care of it, etc... The same way there are actions required of our salvation like repenting, trusting, and believing. Monergism is false. In other words, God does not repent for you, you do.
You have the wrong view of salvation. Let's present your scenario. You stand before Jesus as judge on the last day. You present your good works, look at what I did in your name. I prophesied, performed miracles, and even the demons obeyed. Wow. Now that is a lot of good works, the best, in His name. What does Jesus say? GET OUT!!! Go away,
for I have never known you. Those good works meant nothing, for they did not have faith or belief. The truth of their words/belief are validated/backed up by their actions/works.
What good is repentance if God doesn't want to hear it? It is against God that is our offense. Hebrews says that Esau never found repentance, even though he diligently sought it out with tears. Salvation is monergistice, while sanctification is synergistic. Sanctification does not save.
