John’s audience were generally considered to be believers, some of whom had fallen into the error that a) it doesn’t matter what we do after we believe (vs 6-7), and b) that we don’t have a sin nature problem after we believe (vs 8) and c) if we claim that we have either not ever sinned, or that we have not or cannot sin after we have believed (vs10).

Verse nine demonstrates a) that to confess means to admit that we have actually sinned, thus we are capable of sinning even as believers, and that b) God’s cleansing power is not just to forgive our sins, releasing us from the penalty of sinning, but it will also cleanse our “unrighteousness” or the foundational aspect of sin from us. This is what Wesleyans call complete or entire sanctification. We hold that this is possible at any point in our Christian lives, not just at the point of death. Thus, it is both a continuous process and a crisis event.

Undevout Jews, such as those who were not saved that day; unless there were only 3000 there to begin with? The grammar doesn’t point to anyone else but the Jewish contingent. The language isn’t specific as to who was speaking, so it is not absolutely impossible that it could have been a non-Jew, but the grammar and Peter’s message is pointing exclusively at the Jewish contingent who were there.

The real heresy is sinless perfection
What is holiness? I'm not saying we are made holy on day one of our salvation. The only sins that are taken away on day one of our repentance are sins unto death making us righteous/sinless of lawless sins unto death. Then comes the long process towards perfection/holiness.

I don't teach sinless perfection, and don't know anyone who does. But to not even believe in Jesus taking away our sin is true heresy.

It was the disciples: the apostles and the 120 who were told to wait in Jerusalem for the power of God. They were the ones speaking.

John’s message is directed at those presumed to be Christian believers. It is about, as I have said, foundational truths that apply to all people. However, these truths are directed specifically at believers who are believing errant beliefs as a correction to their thinking. The application of these truths are, however, universal.

I base everything I believe on scripture first, middle and last. I’ve never depended on the various councils opinions as my reason to believe, and my agreement with them is not a determining factor as to why I believe what I believe.

Titus 2:13 and 2Pet 1:1 cannot be more clear in Greek or English that Jesus Christ is both God and Savior! There is no controversy in these verses; no possible alternative translation of the Greek.

The only reason for the council’s to gather was because of the Arian heresy which you now employ. The teachings were clear and decisive up to Arius, his deviation left unchecked until 325 AD, when all but two of the 318 (or 314 according to some) Bishops in attendance voted against Arius’s proposal. (Some say that there were originally 17 bishops that supported Arius, but that is less than 10% of all the Bishops to side with Arius. In the end, 15 of the 17 changed their thinking.)

The claim that Jesus was “added” to Godhood at church councils is historically inaccurate and ignores pre-Nicene Christian writings and Scripture itself.

The Council of Nicaea (325 CE) did not invent the deity of Christ. It addressed a dispute already raging in the churchwhether Jesus was of the same divine nature as the Father. The council clarified doctrine; it did not create it.
Long before Nicaea, Christians worshiped Jesus as divine: See the following 5 points as a mini example of what we know.

Not one of the of the 5800 parcels of the Greek NT have Yahweh in them. The common practice of quoting the OT in the NT was to use Kurios out of respect for the name. There is no notion that Kurios is not Yahweh; it just a different word to say it- again, out of respect and to avoid misusing the name of God. 100% fact!

Do you believe the devout Jews understood the tongues naturally, or supernaturally? That is the superior question if you believe God contradicts His Own Word or not. 1 Corinthians 14:2 is the rule, not a story that has been understood in two different ways. I understand it perfectly in sync with 1 Corinthians 14, it had to be supernaturally. So again, do you believe they did understand naturally or it had to be through a gift of the Spirit.

There is nothing that says they heard “gibberish”. Not every Jew that was there was capable of understanding the multitude languages being spoken by the 120. What amazed and perplexed them was that these Galileans were speaking in their native languages, apparently quite fluently. But not everyone would be hearing a language they could comprehend.

Again, when faced with a circumstance that is puzzling to us, we try to make sense of it by using a familiar concept that we have experienced, like someone being intoxicated and slurring their words which makes them hard to understand. ‘These people must be drunk” was a reasonable solution for what they were experiencing; a group of people speaking in an unfamiliar and unrecognizable way. I hear people speaking in their native tongue all the time in shopping malls and grocery stores. I don’t understand a single word coming out of their mouths. I don’t think they are speaking “gibberish”, but I certainly don’t understand them.

Moreover, the Pharisee and Saducee leaders would be quite mocking in their reactions to the disciples speaking in a language of which they shouldn’t have knowledge. Accusations that these Jesus followers were drunk would not be a far fetched idea.
