Yeah that's what it has to be in trinitarianism because God can't die. That's a tough one for them. I haven't ever seen any of them make sense out of Jesus' sacrifice.

My belief is the Father is separate and distinct person to the Son.
If you define "God" as the personal name of the Father, you will not understand John 3:16.

The Bible says "The Word became flesh" so the Word is flesh. If the Word is God, and the Word is flesh, then God died. This is the pickle you all find yourself in again, and again, and again because you don't understand what you're reading.

The one who is the sin sacrifice isn't God at all, but rather a sinless man, because "The Word that became flesh" is what was sacrificed.
