@FreeInChrist
Red, this reading does not follow Paul’s argument in Romans.
In Romans 1:16, Paul is explaining why he preaches the gospel openly and without shame. The gospel is the power of God unto salvation precisely because it confronts unbelief and brings sinners to faith. If the gospel only becomes “the power of God” after a person already believes, Paul’s statement collapses in its own context.
When compare with all scriptures,
especially so its twin scriptures recorded for us in 1st Corinthians 1:17-31, then it
fits perfectly as it should, since the bible is one cohesive whole teaching the same truth form one scripture to the next, when Isaiah 28 is followed.
Isaiah 28: 8,9 ~ “Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine?
them that are weaned from the milk,
and drawn from the breasts. For precept
must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little,
and there a little:”
And then the spiritual puzzle will come together, for those who in sincerity, and a love for the truth shall be able to see clearly.
Romans 1–3 is addressed to a mixed audience of Jews and Gentiles who are under sin, not exclusively to the regenerate.
None of the word of God is addressed to the unregenerate! It does speak about the wicked but they are not addressed to them, personally.
Romans 1:7 ~ “To all that be in Rome,
beloved of God, called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
That makes no sense if the gospel is only meant to circulate among those already born again.
It make perfect sense. Listen carefully to Paul's words:
1st Corinthians 1:21 ~ “For after that in the wisdom of God
the world by wisdom
knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.”
God chose the foolishness of preaching to save them "
THAT BELIEVE", meaning, to save them in a
practical sense, not in a regenerate sense, since that is a work done by God's Spirit alone when they are quickened from the dead to life in Jesus Christ. The life of a child of God is a life of growing in grace and KNOWLEDGE of the truth as it is in Jesus Christ. All of God's elect spend their days learning who they are, and what God has done for them through His only begotten Son. We never stop learning, but will spend our whole journey here below preparing us for that day when we shall behold him whom our soul loveth, whom we have heard of by the hearing of the ear, but one day shall see with our eyes, and the foolishness of preaching the gospel is preparing us for that day, so in this sense, we are being saved daily by reading, seeking, praying and gaining more understanding of the purpose as to who we are and where we are going. One day we will say just as Job did:
Job 42:5 ~ “I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear:
but now mine eye seeth thee.”
“From faith to faith” does not describe a transfer of revelation between already-regenerate people. It describes the principle of justification by faith from beginning to end. Paul himself clarifies this later in Romans 4 using Abraham, who believed while ungodly — not after regeneration.
To say you are in the dark would be a very mild rebuke, yet I'll leave it with that saying. The only people living that I can share truth with, are those who
have faith,
it is impossible to share truth, even the smallest truth, with a person who is not yet born of God, to them it would be
pure foolishness, not worth their time to even consider, beside they would be ashamed for their worldly friends seeing them seeking to know the truth, since most of the world believes such things are for men who are not able to rise to the level of their wisdom and might and must depend of such a fairy tale story as the only means for them to excel an have something better than what they now have. I know men, I have lived in this world for almost 80 years, and know what I'm talking about. This evil and wicked sin of being ashamed even labors to works in the heart of God's children, to our own shame, if we are honest with ourselves.
If the gospel were only to be preached to those already born again, Paul’s missionary labors among unbelieving Jews and Gentiles would be unintelligible. Yet Paul consistently preached Christ to those who did not believe, precisely because faith comes through hearing the gospel.
@FreeInChrist do you not know that even God's elect do not believe certain truths, and we labor to help them to SEE truths that even they fight against! Time will not allow me to go into Romans 10:1-13, but I could if need to. For now I will only say this:
2nd Timothy 2:10 ~ “Therefore I endure all things
for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.”
Who did Paul endure all things for? Not for the reprobates, but for the elect's sake, that they may obtain the salvation (practical speaking) which is in Jesus Christ. Pretty clear if you ask me.
- Romans 1:16 — “unto salvation to every one that believeth”
- Romans 1:17 — “from faith to faith”
- 1 Corinthians 1:18 — “unto us which are saved it is the power of God”
- 1 Corinthians 1:21 — “it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe”
Especially note 1 Corinthians 1:21: it pleased God to save them that believe — not those already saved, not those already regenerate.
Every verse you cited places faith before salvation, not salvation before faith. The gospel is God’s power unto salvation because it is the means by which God brings sinners to faith — not merely a message reserved for those already alive.
This calls for a separate post that I will do later, since time and space will not allow me to do so now, but, trust me, I will, and truly looking forward to do so ~ laboring for the elect's sake that they may truly be saved from the many corrupt teachings that is in the world in these last days. May God be pleased to bless this post to the comfort, joy, peace, and understanding of his people is our sincere prayer to the glory of His own name sake.
