This RCC counsel has anathematized anyone who would believe the following.

We are saved by the following :

By faith alone
In Christ alone
By grace alone
With Scripture alone
Glory to God alone

CANON IX.-If any one saith, that by faith alone the impious is justified; in such wise as to mean, that nothing else is required to co-operate in order to the obtaining the grace of Justification, and that it is not in any way necessary, that he be prepared and disposed by the movement of his own will; let him be anathema.

CANON XII.-If any one saith, that justifying faith is nothing else but confidence in the divine mercy which remits sins for Christ's sake; or, that this confidence alone is that whereby we are justified; let him be anathema.

CANON XV.-If any one saith, that a man, who is born again and justified, is bound of faith to believe that he is assuredly in the number of the predestinate; let him be anathema

They confuse justification and sanctification; we are saved by faith alone unto good works.

There is a difference between 'faith' and 'confidence'.

CANON XV.-If any one saith, that a man, who is born again and justified, is bound of faith to believe that he is assuredly in the number of the predestinate; let him be anathema
Do they define predestinate as did Augustine; ie. double predestination?

This is a complex subject and so I will not attempt to do more than highlight a problem.

Reality is that salvation in the bible has many references - both temporal and eternal, with past present and future components.
Were saved. Are saved . Will be saved.

So much of what is written by protestants is way over simplistic in the attempt to reduce to simple formulae that "throw out the baby with the bath water"

One of the problems of why we disagree is the meaning of the word "faith" which is not nearly as simple as many protestants try to make it.
It is not simply intellectual assent or one time affirmation that Jesus is Lord - even the devil believes that!

So what does the word faith mean. What does it include?
To give a hint I point at John 3:36 which draws a contrast between those who do and do not have faith..

The opposite of believe is "DISOBEY!!!". the Greek word apeithon
So faith is about doing those things the Lord asks you to do.
obedience is what our Lord asks.

The only occurence of "faith" and "alone" in the same sentence in the bible is james 2:24 which says it is not faith alone!

I doubt if many people know this. As a piece of ecumenism, the holy see attempted to resolve difference with one section of the lutheran church and came to a joint accord.
The see agreed with "faith alone" provided the definition is "formed faith" that is faith with charity, love of God.
But having agreed the formula the see rightly observed it is a thoroughly misleading phrase "faith alone" because there is more than just intellectual assent. You must obey to have faith!

That is the reason trent rightly opposed the oversimplistic (and non biblical) formula faith alone which is expressly denied in James!

I recommend a book to all "salvation controversy" by akin, in which he unpicks the differences in uses of language on areas on which we actually agree.
