Sometimes we see someone who is more loving and giving than most of us could ever expect to be. The question
arises then as to the manner by which we as Christians are different from non-Christians. Why does God have
Christians instead of just repented "gentiles?" From the perspective of the one being evangelized, they could ask,
what makes me different from my current self if I become a Christian?
Hi.
The new birth is what makes us different from those who are not following Jesus.
In talking to Nicodemus in John 3, it's important to note that Nicodemus was probably the most well educated teacher in Israel at the time.
He knew everything about the Bible and apparently was "the" teacher of the country.
Yet, it wasn't enough.
He needed more.
It wasn't enough to keep the Law, wear the right clothes, be in the right circles of influence and have the right friends and the best standing in the community.
Jesus starts off telling him...
You must be born again to see, and enter God's Kingdom. John 3:3-5.
Nicodemus of course wasn't aware of this, and proceeded to ask Jesus about it.
In 1 Peter 1:23, we're told that we are born again by God's Word.
That God's Word is a seed that lasts forever.
Paul tells Titus that we are regenerated by the Holy Spirit. Titus 3:5.
In Ezekiel 36:25-27 we read that God actually does something only he can do to make it possible for us to actually succeed in knowing God.
He pours clean water on us, and cleanses us from our sin and idols.
He removes the old stony heart of flesh and gives us a new heart of flesh.
He gives us a new spirit.
He then gives us His Holy Spirit to cause us to keep his ordinances and judgments.
While this may seem out of line with the rest of the new testament, we note in Romans 8, vss 4-5, the only way to successfully satisfy the righteous requirements of the law is to walk in the Spirit, and the only way to achieve that is to focus our thoughts on spiritual things.
In Matthew 22:37-40, Jesus tells us that the Law and Prophets are summed up in the two great commands.
Love God and love your neighbor.
Paul further stated in Romans 13:8-10 that the law is satisfied by loving your neighbor as yourself.
We further read in Galatians 5:16-25 regarding the fruits of the Spirit.
In Galatians 6:15 Paul tells us that the only thing that avails is that we are a new creation.
Thus, what makes us different from those who are outside of Christ is the New Birth.
