What is regeneration?

@civic

No one was born again until Pentecost period.

False statement nowhere found in scripture.

Isaac was born after the Spirit, meaning born again Gal 4:28-29

28 Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise.

29 But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now.

Gill writes:

persecuted him that was born after the Spirit: by whom is meant Isaac, who, though he was not conceived under the overshadowings of the Holy Spirit, without the help of man, as Christ was; yet because of the divine power which was so eminently displayed in his conception and generation, under all the difficulties, and disadvantages, and seeming impossibilities of nature, he is said to be born after the Spirit: and besides, he was also regenerated by the Spirit of God, was a good man, and one that feared the Lord, as the whole account of him shows; and in this also fitly pointed out the spiritual seed, true believers, under the Gospel dispensation, who are born again of water, and of the Spirit, and are renewed in the spirit of their minds; in whom the work of the Spirit is begun, and grace is the governing principle; in whom the Spirit of God dwells and operates; and whose conversation is spiritual, and who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. The persecution of Isaac by Ishmael was by "mocking" him, Genesis 21:9 the Hebrew word there made use of is in allusion to Isaac's name, which signifies "laughter": and Ishmael laughed at him, jeered and derided him. The Jewish doctors are divided about the sense of this: some say that the word rendered "mocking" is expressive of idolatry, according to

Conclusion: Faith/Belief precedes life. John opens his gospel with belief preceding life ( John 1:12-13 and ends the gospel with the same John 20:31 ) Jesus teaches the same in John 3.

hope this helps !!!
My friend~you did not help with this, and I believe we shall prove it when he address those scriptures soon in this discourse between he who was thought to be a master in Israel with him who is Master over all....he will show us otherwise than what you are saying.

100 % sure. :)
Let me finish with John 3 and then I will address this point as well, since it goes with what we're discussing. If you believe the scriptures, which I'm sure you do, then you cannot also hold~a man in the flesh, loving, fearing, and serving God, can do so, without being born again, for that would be impossible!

All Pentecost did was to give he saints the knowledge of the power they had, if they only used that power in manner in which he works through certain vessels who believe, and live according to the word of God ~ the Spirit of God is within all of God's children, yet very few tap into the power within them for service and a victorious life of faith. We lose too many battles to our sinful flesh~say to say.

"Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his"~This has always been true, true back in the OT, true during Paul's day and true now, and always will be true.
The Spirit of Christ/God, one and the same as far as the Godhead goes, has always dwelt in the prophets and in God's children, if not, then it would had been impossible for them to have faith and please God, impossible.

John three will also support this truth which Nicodemus should had known, and would have known, if he had applied himself more diligently than he did.
Maybe he played one extra round of golf more than he should have ~ not that playing golf is wrong, but searching the scriptures is much more important and definitely more rewardly. ;)

"That which is born of the flesh"~Is that which is born of water from our mother's womb~and that is flesh, (which is at enmity against God and is not subject to God, neither indeed can be.) regardless if it were even possible to be born again by water, we still must be born again before we can see, hear, and begin to understand precious truths from the word of God that rules in God's kingdom on earth, where he is loved, worship and served.

Flesh in the scriptures often denotes our sinful lust from Adam's fallen nature ~ a nature stamped with the image of the devil himself ~ of darkness, void of true wisdom, understanding and spiritual knowledge....God's image was stolen from Adam because of his disobedience to God's commandment~Adam and Eve were taken captive slaves to sin and Satan no longer were they free to obey God, they at once became at enmity against God~not just an enemy, which is bad enough, but they became at enmity, or at war against the God of heaven.

The flesh, or the old man is in bondage to sin and the devil, meaning there is no such thing as a free will until one is set free by the power of God and with the new man he can then, and then only, see, hear and obey.

So, that which is born of flesh IS FLESH! So much much more could be said, but enough to prove our point. Well, one more.....
We must be born again to have the mind of Christ working through us before we are able to know truth from error, for the natural man is not able to distinguish between the truth and errors, even for those having the image of Jesus Christ working through them, is it a labor to free ourselves from error and deceit~and we will never do it perfectly so long as we live in this tabernacle of flesh, never.
is born of the Spirit is spirit
Once a person is born again by the Spirit of the Living God, then at that point( but not until then) they have the power to see, hear, and understand God's precious truths, because they have now been recreated after the image of Jesus Christ, which is the express image of God which Adam was first created with, but the devil stole that from him using his deceitful devices! Every child of God has two natures, an old man which is deceitful with all of its deceitful lust controlling him, and a new man, which is renewed in knowledge and created in true holiness after Jesus Christ. Some of the verses just quoted above can be applied here under...
is born of the Spirit is spirit
Born again is a bible doctrine taught all through the scriptures in so many different truths when all combine...... a man with understanding knows that it is imperative that man be born again first because they could even have a desire to follow God in their fallen state. They would know that Adam lost his image of God in which he was created~Genesis 5:3; they could see the wickedness of man how great it was, after the fall~with the first two sons born, one killed the other! I could go on and on, but we are coming back to this very point soon after I'm finished with John 3. I do not not want to get ahead of myself, which is easy to do.
The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
For now, let me say a few words, and maybe we will come back and add more.

The new birth is much like the wind, it comes and goes unnoticed~we truly do not know when it comes, nor when it leaves..... yes, the effect we can see, but its moving is hidden from us.

The new birth can take place anywhere and anytime after conception in the womb~John the Baptist~Luke one; to just before giving up the Ghost~the thief on the cross. One can be doing anything under heaven since man is totally passive (he's dead in tresspasses and sins)...God is the only active person working in the new birth~not the will of the flesh, (since man is dead in sins, and at enmity against God) nor the will of man, (meaning no preacher, or soul winner is involved) but of God. One could be sound asleep, working on a job, at bar drinking, in bed with their spouses, it makes no difference since man is dead in sins~God doesn't need us in a certain state of mind since our minds are defiled with sins and all things are open and naked before the eyes of the Almighty!

It takes the same power that resurrected Christ....... to spiritually resurrect a dead sinner to life in Jesus Christ. Ephesians 1:19,20.

Later....RB

So RB it seems you believe this with no context of anything that needs to be considered......and yet are Calvinists really consistent in holding this position? Sorry but I'd say not.

I've seen from Calvinists writings repeatedly when asked why God chose for them to be the elect they'll say they don't know but there had to be something good God saw in them. What that is to them they say is a mystery.

What the thing they don't understand is the no good thing verse needs taken in proper context. It doesn't mean people don't have a capacity to choose without irresistible grace. They do. And what the real mystery is, is why they can't understand that. Hoping you will.

False no man can come to Christ except for the irresistible grace and power of regeneration, or drawing. Jn 6:44

44 No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.

A few more scriptures on the topic of this discussion
1 Peter 1:23
For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.
Let us consider 1st Peter 1:23.

When considering a scripture seeking to understand the true biblical sense, it truly helps to first eliminate what it could not mean in light of other scriptures, so that we would not have scriptures against each other ~ there must be a constant flow of scriptures in unity before we can be assure that we have the correct meaning which the Holy Ghost intended for us to have and understand. I'll be short.

These scriptures cannot mean that sinners are born again by the written word of God, since it is impossible for sinners to understand until they first have the mind of Christ, given freely by grace on Jesus' behalf. Faith is the the means of our new birth, but the evidence thereof.
Another one of Jesus' double verily, that he used to get his listener's attention concerning what he was about to say, would be a truth that most do not grasp a hold of, so, his double verity's should cause them to stop and ponder his words carefully~which few do.

The verb tenses used by Christ proves that faith is the evidence not the condition for one to know that he has everlasting life and has ALREADY passed from death unto life eternal. The new birth is a work of a new creation whereby the elect sinner has been recreated after the image of Jesus Christ in his new man within him, which man had the power to receive, believe and know that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the Living God.

More could be said, but, it should be clear that one first must be born of God before they can see, hear and believe in that order.
The sense of Peter's words are not that hard to understand, when we compare scriptures with scriptures.

Peter is simply saying that by the testimony, witness of the word of God is how one is born again, consider:

God has chosen to reveal truths to us through the written word of God that he gave to us through holy men of God who spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. He could have chosen to put a new message on trees every so often and we could have went there and receive a word from God, but he chose SCRIPTURES/WORDS to reveal truths to us. Consider:
Without going into these scriptures in depth, I only want to point out this truth~The word of God give WITNESS of how we are born again, and the scriptures are God's testimony to us of this great truth ~ so, when Peter said we are born again by the word of God, I understand him to mean, that we are born again ACCORDING the word of God, or God's testimony of how this birth takes place.

We know that it is not by the will of our flesh, nor the will of some other person, but of God, as explained above. Selah.

First of all, 1 Pet 1:23 is solely speaking of the regenerate elect 1 Pet 1:2-3

2 Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit[new birth], unto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace, be multiplied.

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
They are children of the resurrection of Christ !

begotten us again is the same word in 1 Pet 1:23

23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.
So the word of God is the Logos of God, Christ the incorruptible seed. Adam was the corruptible seed, Christ the incorruptible seed

Greetings brother~

I very familiar with that interpretation since I know some Christians that hold to that view~plus the whole Primitive Baptist community teach the same. While it is true, that we are begotten solely by God apart from all means, that is not what these three scriptures are teaching.

Context is king and it will drive our understanding if we only will listen carefully to its words. Consider:
Unless my eyes are closed to the meaning of these words I highlighted in red, it seems almost 100% Peter is speaking about the written word of God, especially from these words: this is the word which by the gospel is preached.

If you are having trouble understanding how the written word of God abideth forever, to me it is simple ~ God is eternal, thereby, whatever comes from his mouth must be as eternal as he is.

This is vocational election. They were dispersed within the Roman Empire, by the foresight of God, so that those who would believe would spread the Gospel upon their conversion. No mention of regeneration before belief here.

Gods Word is Eternal, Living, Alive.

Christs words are eternal.

Mark 13:31
Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away.

Psalms 119:160
All your words are true;
all your righteous laws are eternal.

Isaiah 40:8
The grass withers, the flower fades,
But the word of our God stands forever.

Acts 13:44-50
And the next Sabbath nearly the whole city assembled to hear the word of God. 45 But when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy, and began contradicting the things spoken by Paul, and were blaspheming. 46 And Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; since you repudiate it, and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles. 47 "For thus the Lord has commanded us,

'I have placed You as a light for the Gentiles,
That You should bring salvation to the end of the earth.'"

48 And when the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord; and as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed. 49 And the word of the Lord was being spread through the whole region.

The word of the Lord(Jesus) is the word of God. More proof Jesus is God in Acts.

The word of the Lord, the word of Christ is the same as the word of God. The word of the Lord(Jesus) was spread throughout the book of Acts as the very word of God and they are used interchangeably in Acts. Below we see the word of the Lord = Jesus words are the very words of God. This can be said of no mere man but only a man who is also God as Scripture declares about Christ.

Colossians 3:16
Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you,

Romans 10:17
Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ.

Finally, brothers, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you. 2 And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men, for not everyone has faith. 3 But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.

1 Peter 1:23-25
For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. 24 For,

"All men are like grass,
and all their glory is like the flowers of the field;
the grass withers and the flowers fall,
25 but the word of the Lord stands forever."

2-Can we say let the word of Peter richly dwell in you
3-Can we say let the word of David richly dwell in you
4-Can we say let the word of Moses richly dwell in you

the answer to the above is a resounding NO you cannot say it.

But you can say let the word of God, the word of the Lord, the word of Christ richly dwell in you because they have the exact/identical meaning. The word of God is living/active as per Hebrews 4:12- it is alive and its the very living seed of there gospel that it planted in the heart.

hope this helps !!!

Hi there, the word for word in Vs 25 is rema a different word than the Logos of Vs 23, and it seems to be more descriptive of the preached word of Christ, its the same word used in Rom 10:8

Lol you just post, not understanding any of it, just mixing all kinda verses

Gospel literally means " good news ". What is the good news ?

the Greek word is where we get our English word from evangelism

euaggelion: good news
Original Word: εὐαγγέλιον, ου, τό
Part of Speech: Noun, Neuter
Transliteration: euaggelion
Phonetic Spelling: (yoo-ang-ghel'-ee-on)
Definition: good news
Usage: the good news of the coming of the Messiah, the gospel; the gen. after it expresses sometimes the giver (God), sometimes the subject (the Messiah, etc.), sometimes the human transmitter (an apostle).

There is One God
There is One Lord
There is One Faith
There is One Baptism
There is One Jesus
There is only One way to God
There is One Savior

And there is One Gospel

Galatians 1:6
6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
9 As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

So since there is only One God, One Savior, One way to God through Christ, One faith, One baptism and One Gospel- there is only one way to be saved.

Paul defines that Gospel by which we are saved below:

1 Corinthians 15:1-19
Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand, 2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.

3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, 5 and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep; 7 then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles; 8 and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, and not fit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace toward me did not prove vain; but I labored even more than all of them, yet not I, but the grace of God with me. 11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed.

12 Now if Christ is preached, that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised; 14 and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain. 15 Moreover we are even found to be false witnesses of God, because we testified against God that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise, if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised; 17 and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied.

Only One way to be saved, by One Person, One Gospel and One Faith. In Him alone. Scripture is really very exclusive here but inclusive to all that come to Him freely!

And Paul received this gospel directly from Christ by personal revelation

Galatians 1:11-12
I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that the gospel I preached is not of human origin. 12 I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.

This gospel is Eternal !

Revelation 14:6
Then I saw another angel flying overhead, with the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on the earth—to every nation and tribe and tongue and people

Acts 4:12
And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved

1 Timothy 2:5
For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

Jesus passed on the gospel to His Disciples. Its the same Gospel but Christ had not suffered, died, risen yet. The disciples didn't understand the Passion until after His Resurrection, they were in denial.

Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand…. I am telling you now before it happens, so that when it does happen you will believe that I am who I am.” — John 13:7,19

After he was raised from the dead, his disciples recalled what he had said. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken. — John 2:22

From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life. — Matthew 16:21

Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. On the way, he took the Twelve aside and said to them, “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!” — Matthew 20:17-19

After His Resurrection

He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. — Luke 24:25-27

He said to them, “This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms.” Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. — Luke 24:44-45

Are you teaching others the one true Gospel ?

Ones salvation depends upon the one true gospel !

Gospel Summary

1- Jesus died for our sins according to the scriptures
2- Jesus was buried , in a guarded tomb
3- Jesus was raised from the dead, resurrected on the 3rd day bodily
4- Jesus was seen by many witnesses over 40 days before His Ascension and last of all appeared to Paul after His Ascension.

Jesus died for the sin of the world as the Lamb of God who taketh them away ( John 1:29 ) and Rose from the dead as the only sign He would give an unbelieving people who rejected Him proving He was the promised Messiah who had the power over sin, death/grave and the devil having been raised from the dead conquering them all. The gospel is a historical fact verified by many witnesses. The biblical principle of letting every fact be confirmed by the testimony of 2 or 3 witnesses. This gospel is for all the world, for all sinners to come freely and receive the forgiveness of their sins by the atonement He made for ALL the WORLD as per 1 John 2:2.

John 1:12
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,

John 3:16-18
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

John 20:30-31
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Do you believe this gospel ?

The gospel is Christological or Christ centered. The message is about Jesus. So, the question becomes one of identity. Regeneration comes through the living and abiding Word of Christ- the gospel message. It's the very seed planted in the heart of man. Faith in there gospel message precedes live. Life is a result of the gospel and believing its message about Christ.
