THE AUTHORITY OF JESUS
Jesus spoke with an authority like no other. Time and again, He declared, “You have heard that it was said to those of old… but I say to you” (Matthew 5:21–22), boldly asserting His words as the final truth. Unlike the prophets who prefaced their messages with, “Thus saith the Lord,” Jesus spoke with divine certainty, saying, “Truly, I say to you.” His authority was not borrowed; it was inherent. He proclaimed, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me” (Matthew 28:18), leaving no doubt that His words carried the very weight of God’s own voice.
Unlike human teachers, Jesus never retracted a statement, never spoke with uncertainty, never contradicted Himself, and never apologized for His words. His message was — and remains — perfect and unshakable.
Those who heard Him speak knew they were witnessing something extraordinary. In Capernaum, the people “were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority” (Luke 4:32). Matthew 7:28-29 tells us that “when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.”
The Pharisees and chief priests were so angry with Jesus that they sent officers to take Him. But they didn’t, for they said, “No one ever spoke like this man!” (John 7:46). Jesus’ words were not merely wise — they carried the power of God Himself.
The Gospel accounts leave no room for doubt — Jesus and His message are inseparable. His words had ultimate authority because He was (and is) God!
Do I hear an “Amen”?
