You're a man. I dare you to answer these questions.
What does 1 John 1:8 mean
What does 1 John 3:9 mean
Is Romans 7:14-25 about born again Christians or only those under the law?
When the disciples were taking on water in a boat that was in the middle of a storm, and Jesus was asleep in the bow of the boat what should the disciples have done if they actually had faith that Jesus said they didn't have.
1. First off, you are disobeying Paul in Galatians 5:25-26 where he says: "If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us NOT BECOME BOASTFUL, CHALLENGING ONE ANOTHER, envying one another."
When you DARE me to answer those questions, you are CHALLENGING ME, as if to say, "Okay, you think you know more about the Scripture than I do? Let's find out. Go ahead, let's see what you've got."
So you are NOT walking in the Spirit, as you are challenging me. You are once again, being boastful and proud.
However, if God is willing, I will give you my understanding of those verses.
I don't claim that my answers are perfectly right, but they are my current understanding of those verses.
1 John 1:8 - "If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us."
Every book of the Bible is directed towards people of faith, believers. So 1 John is no exception. God is speaking through the Holy Spirit through John to us - Christians, Christians during his lifetime and throughout the ages. However, he may not have known how widespread the influence of his words would be. John testifies that they (probably referring to the apostles) have seen, heard and even touched Jesus, who "was from the beginning". He knows that Jesus Himself was eternal life and was with the Father, but then He was shown to them. He invites us to have fellowship with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ, as they already had.
1 John 3:9 "No one who is born of God PRACTICES sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot (PRACTICE) sin, because he is born of God."
Then he tells us that Jesus told them that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. He goes on to say that if we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in darkness, we are lying and not practicing the truth.
But if we are walking in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin.
Did you catch that? It is possible to walk in the Light, and have fellowship with one another, and yet still have need of the blood of Jesus cleansing us from all sin. So walking in the Light cannot mean that we never sin - it means that as a rule, as a practice, we generally do not sin, but it is inevitable that, on occasion, we do sin. If it was possible to reach a point where we will never sin the rest of our lives, then the Holy Spirit would not have directed John to add the phrase - and the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin. All believers have had their previous sins cleansed by the blood of Jesus, when we were saved, when we were born again, but nowhere in the Bible do we read that when we get saved, our FUTURE sins are also cleansed (in advance). For years, I mistakenly thought that all my sins, PAST, PRESENT, and FUTURE were ALL forgiven, when I was saved. If that were true, then why would Jesus teach us to pray: "And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors."? So even though we are saved, any current or future sins must be confessed and also cleansed by His blood - 1John 1:9
1 JOHN 1:8 However, "If we say that we have no (current or future) sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us."
Why did Jesus tell Peter to forgive a repentant brother up to 70 X 7 times, or 490 times - and that brother's past sins were already forgiven, when he was saved. Because Jesus knew that each of us will sin - all the way until He returns. Not because we want to, but because "the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak."
Look at 1 John 2:1 "My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may NOT sin. And (yet) if anyone (does) sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; ... "
The Bible likens our relationship with Jesus with marriage. He is the bridegroom, we are the bride. Is it possible that a husband and wife could reach a point where they will never offend each other, say a mean word to each other, or hurt each other, or argue with each other? In a make believe world, yes. But in the real world - NO. The same is true with Jesus. And we know that our "husband" Jesus cannot and will never sin, so if there is any sin between us and Him - it is OUR sin.
2. 1 John 3:9 "No one who is born of God PRACTICES sin, because His seed abides in him; and he cannot (PRACTICE) sin, because he is born of God."
The KJV may not have the word "practices" in it, but that's what the verse means. We know that is true from 1 John 1:9-10 and 1 John 2:1. Even those who are walking in the Light, or in the Spirit, will sin from time to time - right up until the 2nd Coming.
And that is the KEY. As we mature, we should sin less and less, but we will never reach a point where we don't sin anymore, as much as we would like that to happen.
I will write another post on the last two verses/scripture.
