John 8:58 (“Before Abraham was, I am”)

    • Traditional reading: Jesus’ use of “I am” before Abraham is taken as a claim to eternal existence (and even deity).
    • Alternate understanding: Contextual linguistics and Jewish background show Jesus’ ego eimi can be emphatic “I am the one.” C.K. Barrett notes that Jesus’ “I am” does not identify Jesus with God per se, but simply draws strong attention to himself as the one God sent. In context, Jesus is emphasizing his unique role, not uttering the divine Name. As one modern commentator explains, Abraham “saw Jesus’ day” (John 8:56) not by Abraham literally time-traveling, but by faith in the promise. Thus Jesus being “before Abraham” can mean Jesus was God’s ordained Redeemer from before Abraham’s birth. John the Baptist’s cousin John (the apostle) could well have intended no more than that “Jesus was God’s plan for salvation from ancient times,” humbly recognized by John the Baptist.
      For example, one writer concludes on John 1:30 (similar idea): “Jesus was… foreknown before the foundation of the world, but has appeared in these last times…”. In short, “I am before Abraham” is plausibly understood as “Jesus was in God’s plan long before Abraham”, not “Jesus personally existed 2,000 years earlier.”

I would also add that in John 8, when confronted, rather than idnetifying himself as God he indentified himself as a man who told them the truth he heard from God (John 8:40) so it doesn't make sense that Jesus would turn right around, give a wink, and pull a "gotchya! ;)" and claim to be God. I have never seen a Trinitarian address the context of John 8. They always zero in on John 8:58 only.

They pick a verse here, and another verse there, a hint here, and a clue there. There's no verse in the Bible that says we should believe or confess that Jesus is God.

One cannot deny the Lord Jesus is YHWH (Romans 10:13) and be a Christian since a major component of the gospel that Paul preached included this important truth (Romans 10:8).

Romans 10 teaches that Jesus isn't YHWH. One cannot idolize Jesus without sinning. I recommend you work on reptenting.

Indeed. If you take away the divinity of Jesus, then you are making him a mere idol in your mind. I doubt you can even be able to repent until you come to acknowledge his divinity. Added later: note that I am not the one to figure out if any specific person has become justified in Christ -- I can only express concern about it.

He's a genius theologian. One of the most sound minds I have ever had the pleasure to read about.

Here's what John Schoenheit, your "genius theologian," said about praying to Jesus.

"...Scripture testifies that it is permissible to pray to Jesus."

Since his sound mind affirms praying to Jesus and you disagree with him, then what does that say about the soundness of your mind concerning this topic?

The evidence I supplied has not been refuted.

Keep hiding and running away from the light.
What evidence? 🤷‍♂️

Jesus is never called YHWH, never called the I AM, never called the LORD of Hosts, never called the God of Abraham, and a dozen other names/titles exclusive to God alone. Yet you think you can fool anyone into believing Jesus is YHWH. Good luck, you'll need it.

Romans 10 quotes verses from the Old Testament that explicitly say YHWH performed an action to lay the cornerstone (Jesus.) In What world does it make anyone sense where the subject performs the action on themselves using language that completely refutes the idea?

Jesus isn't YHWH here:

Romans 10
11It is just as the Scripture says: “Anyone who believes in Him will never be put to shame.”
Isaiaih 28
16So this is what the Lord GOD says:
“See, I lay a stone in Zion,
a tested stone,
a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation;
the one who believes will never be shaken.

Jesus isn't YHWH here:

Romans 10
13for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Joel 2
32And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD
will be saved;
for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
there will be deliverance, as the LORD has promised,
among the remnant called by the LORD.

What is the only Name that can save you from your sins???

Next time look at it with your eyers open instead of glued shut.

An assertion without proof.

Scripture teaches that YHWH is that name. The Bible never says to call on the name of Jesus to be saved. Do you want to be saved?
