It is the difference between willful sin and unintentional sin. It is of the heart.
Willful sins lead to death. God provides a sacrifice for unintentional sin as we walk in the Spirit and are saved.

Can one commit sin and be light?

- being darkened in their understanding excluded from the life of God because of the IGNORANCE THAT IS IN THEM because of the hardness of their heart

This verse offers John's third conditional ("if") statement in a row. There are five such "if" statements in this passage. First, he refers to those who claim fellowship with Christ while living in sin (1 John 1:6). Second, John addresses those who truly live according to Christ's commands (1 John 1:7). Here, in verse 8, John refers to those who claim to have no sin whatsoever.

John's pattern of alternating positive and negative "if" statements clues the reader in to upcoming ideas. Here, it sets up the reader to expect a negative "if" statement. Saying we have no sin is considered negative and simply impossible—only God is completely without sin (Hebrews 4:15). So, anyone who claims to be without sin is self-deceived.

John teaches that those who claim to be without sin do not have the truth in them. This lack of truth applies to the saved believer who claims to have been freed from all sin in their present life. A believer should recognize his or her sinfulness and need of forgiveness through Christ. Even the most devout, clean-living Christian still contends with sin, in some way, shape, or form. Forgetting that we have sin makes us insensitive to things we ought to confess to God. As stated in verse 7, we don't lose hope, but we trust in Christ to forgive us.

While it's not necessary to have perfect knowledge in order to be saved—justified before God—a core aspect of the gospel is a recognition of our sin. Therefore, anyone who claims to have never sinned is denying the gospel. By definition, such a person is an unbeliever. And, any believer who concludes that they no longer sin needs to be corrected.

Note, also, that verses 8, 9, and 10 cover past, present, and future sins. Believers still have the choice of whether or not to submit to Christ at any given time. Of course Noah had a role in saving his house from destruction.

Obedience to what speaks to us is how we cooperate in this Salvation.


Obeying the Gospel is how we are saved.


But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “LORD, who has believed our report?” So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:16-17


This is called the obedience of faith. It’s the principle of faith.


But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith: Romans 16:26

I would have to say concerning “future” sins that if a person does sin in the future, they still need to confess it to be forgiven.

There defiantly are sins that lead to physical death. Murder can land you a spot on "Death-Row". Drunkenness and a fatal car wreck. Homosexuality and Aids. And the list goes on.

Any physical injury or death which results from a sin is simply the natural reaction that comes about due to act itself. It is not due to God's providential punishment. That is true even for punishment meted out according to God's law. The death spoken of in Romans 6:23 is spiritual death and only spiritual death.

The usual interpretation of 1 John 1:9 is wrong. The reason that it is wrong is because it is the very antithesis to the meaning of Justification. To be justified is to have sins forgiven and have the debt of eternal condemnation for sin paid by Jesus Christ in His death on the cross. To be justified is a state of being in the life of the one God has saved. Forgiveness of sin is existing standing before God of the one that He has saved. The saint, the believer, does not go from being forgiven then unforgiven with each occurrence of each act of sinning.

Rom 3:21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it-- 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,

That is not a gift given to the believer, then taken away, then given again, then taken away, again and again every time the believer commits a sin. Having sins forgiven in God's redeeming act of salvation is not simply for past sins; that forgiveness is for all sins, past, present and future sins.

Notice that - "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9) is in contrast to - If we say that we have no sin, (present tense) we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us (1 John 1:8) and - If we say that we have not sinned, (past tense) we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. (1 John 1:10)

Certain folks seem to misunderstand verse 9 to mean that we "must confess each and every sin that we commit as we commit them" (keep a specific inventory of every sin) as an "additional requirement" to "remain cleansed" and "if we forget a sin we are toast!" Who could actually write an exhaustive list of every sin they have ever committed or ever will commit? Sin is not only missing the mark by what we do but also what we fail to do. (James 4:17)

You need to be a little careful here. The bible, at least the NT, never speaks of the saint, one who has been saved, as a sinner. It does speak of the saint as one who does sometimes sin, but the designation of sinner biblically applies only to one who has not been saved. That is, one is either a sinner or a saint.

I know that is a fine point, but an important point in understanding what is written.
