The unending requirement of faith

Um Is this not the first verse to carry the phrase "faith of Christ"

Galatians 2:16 (KJV 1900) — 16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
It might be Romans. Why do you ask?

Romans 3:22
Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

Romans 3:22
Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ...

Galatians 2:16
Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ...

Galatians 3:22
But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ...

Philippians 3:9
And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ...
Bad translation it’s faith in Christ not faith of Christ

Since you open this thread using the first verse about the faith of Christ. I will give you what I believe it is. The faith of Jesus Christ is the relationship existing between God and Christ in the bond of the covenant between them. To recognize and acknowledge the relationship God has entered into with Christ, we must first understand that God is the originator of the covenant relationship, and God is the one who brings into being things that did not previously exist. This is His oath, His covenant, and He can be relied on to keep His part of the contract because He guarantees it, and this is His truth. Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son who is expressing the acknowledgment of his Father’s promises and power. The faith Christ has is his faith because of his acknowledgment and acceptance of his Father’s new covenant. Thus, the “gospel of Christ” is born. This faith Jesus Christ has is solid because it's the trust Jesus Christ has with God, who brought him into this special relationship that created the bond of the new covenant between them.
I have to say this is nonsensical. Consider the only begotten son aspect of the relationship you've created relative to the "new covenant". Can you describe the old covenant relationship between father and son?

No reason. My search engine came up with Galatians first, but it is translation dependent

making Faith a requirement for salvation is law keeping.
Not if one believes scripture

Romans 4:1–5 (ESV) — 1 What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? 2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. 3 For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” 4 Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. 5 And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness,

and God still saves those that believe

1 Corinthians 1:21 (KJV 1900) — 21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.
John 20:31 (UASV) — 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

Romans 3:22
Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ...

Galatians 2:16

Um you are assuming a subjective genitive rather than an objective genitive

Romans 3:22 (UASV) — 22 even the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe; for there is no distinction;

Galatians 2:16 (UASV) — 16 but knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law, since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.

Galatians 3:22 (UASV) — 22 But the scriptures shut up all things under sin, so that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to them who believe.

Philippians 3:9 (UASV) — 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own from the Law, but one through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on faith,

Where Christ is the subject rather than the object of faith

Oh I see you use a different Bible that believes Jesus does not have faith and so do you believe it was our faith that saved ourselves and not the faith of Jesus Christ?

Hello @civic & @Peterlag,

I do not think that the verses quoted above are a bad translation, and to limit the wording to, 'faith in Christ', is to lose a wealth of meaning which the use of the words, 'by faith of Jesus Christ' provide. Look at the words of Galatians 2:16, which makes a distinction between believing in Jesus Christ, and the faith of Jesus Christ. We are saved by His act of faith in dying in our place, surely: and by believing in Him we are not only acknowledging His person, as the Son of God, but His work, as being all sufficient for the salvation of our souls in the sight of God the Father.

'Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law,
but by the faith of Jesus Christ,
even we have believed in Jesus Christ,
that we might be justified by the faith of Christ,
and not by the works of the law:
for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.'

(Gal 2:16)

Please consider. :)

Thank you
In Christ Jesus
Chris

Hi @Peterlag & @TomL,

Looking at the wording of Galatians 2:16, a contrast is being made between the work of Christ, which was a work of faith, with the works of the law by which no man shall be justified. I had not seen that before, so I thank you.

The verse is properly tranlated thusly

Galatians 2:16 (UASV) — 16 but knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law, since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.

faith in Christ = believed in Christ

context and grammar decide the issue

Galatians 2:15–16 (ESV) — 15 We ourselves are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners; 16 yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.
Galatians 2:16 (LSB) — 16 nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified.
Galatians 2:15–16 (NIV) — 15 “We who are Jews by birth and not sinful Gentiles 16 know that a person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no one will be justified.
Galatians 2:15–16 (NASB 2020) — 15 “We are Jews by nature and not sinners from the Gentiles; 16 nevertheless, knowing that a person is not justified by works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the Law; since by works of the Law no flesh will be justified.

but no matter which translation employed one cannot escape the fact one must believe in Christ to be justified

Are you telling me Jesus does not have faith and so do you believe it was our faith that saved ourselves and not the faith of Jesus Christ?

I didn't say anything about faith in my last response. I asked you a question that you're avoiding.

You made a nonsensical argument.

There is never any questions concerning the relationship of the Father and the Son. It is an Eternal relationship that preexisted what we know about creation. It is perfect.

Our relationship to faith isn't perfect. It must grow. The greater the faith the more accomplished.

Hello @TomL,

With respect, I still believe the KJV has the better wording, not because it is my translation of choice, but because it places the emphasis on Christ Himself, and not upon the believer.

Thank you

But why should the emphasis be placed on Christ here as The passage clearly teaches the need to have faith in Christ to be justified?

Galatians 2:16–17 (KJV 1900) — 16 Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. 17 But if, while we seek to be justified by Christ, we ourselves also are found sinners, is therefore Christ the minister of sin? God forbid.

Making Faith a requirement for salvation is law keeping. Matt 23:23

23 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

So you will be required to have kept the whole Law for your salvation, and better have kept it perfectly !
