The Jewishness of the Christian Faith​

About one hundred years after the death and resurrection of Christ, a rich man named Marcion arrived to Rome. He donated a large sum to the Christian congregation there, and started teaching a total separation between Christianity and Judaism. He taught that the God of the Old Testament was an “evil and vengeful God.” He created his own bible, comprised only of a heavily edited version of the gospel of Luke and ten of Paul’s letters.
The congregation returned his donation and expelled him from Rome in 144 AD. He moved to the area of modern Turkey where he continued to teach his false doctrine. It became a separate religion, Marcionism, which disappeared within a few hundred years.
This event illustrates for us the absurdity that occurs when we try to understand Christianity without its Jewish roots. Everything Jesus did and taught was based on Judaism. He was the promised Messiah that the Old Testament points to through numerous prophecies. He fulfilled them one after another. Descriptions like “he fulfilled this and that prophecy” occur all over the New Testament.
In Matthew 1:21, the angel tells Joseph: “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” We can discuss what “his people” meant here, but for the original audience there was no question. It’s the Jewish people. The prophecy about the new covenant in Jeremiah 31:31 describes “a new covenant with the people of Israel and the people of Judah.” We can also see that Jesus himself said to the Samaritan woman at the well that “salvation is from the Jews.”
God has opened up this salvation to be available for all people, which is an amazing grace. Paul said that the gospel brings salvation “first to the Jew, then to the Gentile” in Romans 1:16, which is in line with the prophecy of Isaiah, that the Messiah will be “a light for the Gentiles, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth.” (Isaiah 49:6). Moses said “Rejoice you nations, with his people.” (Deut 32:43).
Replacement theologians want to change the last mentioned verse to be “Rejoice you nations, instead of his people.” Even though Marcionism disappeared, the replacement theology still managed to get a foothold in the historic church, and similar false doctrines are still prevalent. It’s not limited to the idea that God replaced his people – some replacement theologians even create an unnecessary separation which doesn’t exist between the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament. How often have you heard a preacher make a difference between the “God of vengeance” in the Old Testament and the “God of love” in the New Testament? “An eye for an eye” in the Old Testament vrs “Love thy neighbor” in the New Testament. Maybe they didn’t notice that both of those verses are from the Torah… Exodus 21:24 and Leviticus 19:18.
The only way to teach in that manner is to read the Bible in an extremely selective way. You need to disregard the many expressions for love and compassion in the Old Testament, and ignore the many warnings in the New Testament about the Last Days, and vengeance against sinners. Most of those who teach in this way are probably doing it out of good will, and not because of antisemitism, but it’s the exact type of teaching which has been used by anti-Semites throughout the centuries.
However, the Jews are not without fault either. There are Rabbis who also wish to see a total separation between Christianity and Judaism. They claim that Christianity has its roots in Greek Gnosticism, and that some Judaism was added later to give the new religion an ancient legitimacy. It gives them an excuse to look at Christianity as a type of idol worship, illegitimate us Messianic Jews, and work against us. It’s of course a direct result of how the church has treated them throughout the centuries.
So the attempts to this artificial separation comes from both sides – anti-Jewish Christians and anti-Christian Jews. But no matter how much they want, and no matter how much the historic churches have “grown apart” from the synagogue culturally, it’s still not biblically possible to make a case for this separation – and that’s what we at the Bible Society try to show in the material that we produce.
Faith in Jesus is Jewish. Christianity is faith in the God of Israel. God is the same in the Old and New Testament. The prophecies of the Old Testament are fulfilled in the New Testament. Salvation comes from the Jews. The New Testament is a Jewish book. We ask people to disregard what the church has done throughout the centuries, disregard what replacement theologians say, and instead read the New Testament with Jewish eyes, without biases and preconditions. When they do that, they see what a Jewish book it is. We know a number of Jews who came to faith in Jesus in that way.
I would encourage all Christians to read the Bible in the same way. Paul wrote in Romans 11 that Gentile Christians are grafted in, but the root is Jewish. That’s how God created it, and that’s the way he wants it, no matter our opinion.
“If the root is holy, so are the branches” (Romans 11:16)

The facts.

Jesus was of the tribe of Judah on his paternal line.
He was born in Bethlehem in judaea
( the above define him as Jewish to those of his era)

In addition, He was a synagogue going adherent of Judaism.
He was properly inducted into Judaism by the temple presentation.
He was a cultural Jew adhering to the rights and festival calendar, eg celebrating Passover, Hanukkah ( the feast of dedication john10:22, maccabees is canonical whether luther liked it or not.)

He was Jewish by every accepted meaning. You cannot rewrite history!

Hebrew is in essence a reference to language not culture, although the occasional reference like letter to Hebrew’s is assumed addressed to Judaists and Christian’s in Jerusalem. So still Judaea.

first thanks for the reply. second, this is your best excuse? the scriptures don't lie. so, if the Lord Jesus was Jewish who was his biological father, book chapter and verse of that name please. that's all you will have to provide, else all you said is down the drain.

And since we read in Scripture God saving and redeeming a people through covenant (Abraham, Mosaic, and New), people that are targeted are the people born from Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the ones that God has promised to deliver according to Scripture.

The "nations" the author is identifying from Scripture are identified as the descendants and seed of Abraham through Ishmael and Esau. As Moses recounts these histories the Scripture does refer to Abraham's and Sarah's offspring as "nations" in Genesis, so the word "nations" at this time did not mean "Gentile" but "masses" [of people] as the word "nations" as defined by James Strong.

There is another explanation that can account for "Gentiles" in the New Testament being identified as Hebrews of mixed heritage (Jew-Gentile offspring) and NOT non-Hebrew Gentiles when you realize that the promise of God to Abraham was also to his seed and that Hebrews did mingle with the "goyim" and learned their ways for a duration of 29-35 generations of Hebrews being scattered among the Gentiles nations by God through the Assyrian and Babylonian conquests. Jews were so entrenched in Greek culture, and many did lose their navigation of Jewish culture and religion because of their assimilation into Greek and Gentile life. The Jerusalem Council did address "Gentiles" (Hellenists) who grew up Gentile whether to circumcise these men after they experienced the born-again conversion for no Jew would ever attempt to circumcise non-Hebrews or to instruct them to obey four aspects of the Law of Moses for this would be cause for riots and the New Testament is void of any riots taking place under these circumstances. Early on the [Jewish] Christians were seen as a sect of Judaism and tolerated until persecution took hold because of the stumbling stone in the minds of the Jews who could not reconcile how their Messiah and King died hanging on a tree, which to Jews was seen as a curse for anyone who did die in this manner and a split occurred between these groups of Jews.

In Jeremiah where God identifies Israel as an Olive tree, but some were broken off due to disobedience, Saul's use of this analogy in Romans eleven can only refer to those that are grafted in again (READ: "again") would have to be Jews - disobedient Jews at that - which are grafted in AGAIN, and not non-Hebrew Gentiles.

Paul never stopped identifying as a Jew (Acts 21:39, 22:3) and the Bible clearly refers to people who are Greeks, Jews, slaves, or free, male, or female, so he was not denying the reality of these categories, but rather he was denying that they give someone a higher status when it comes to being in Christ.

i did not read this but i am responding to the Title "the Jewishness of the Christian faith"

Our MESSIAH came into the world thru the Jewish people 2,000 years ago
Since that time men have crept into the Church and caused much confusion.

We who know and love the LORD YAHshua HAMashiach are waiting for His Return and our Freedom from mortality.

Of the many things that the Ruach HaKodesh has taught me, this one stands out:
We who have been Born Again/Anew by the Spirit into MESSIAH have become a permanent Member in the Household of Faith
where there is neither Jew nor Gentile but One New Man created in YAHshua

When a Jew or a Gentile is Born-Again/Anew we are placed in MESSIAH and into one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel.
Not the Israel on earth but the Israel of God in the Lord YAHshua HaMashiach

You can SEE His Body in Acts and the NT Letters and in Revelation

Greek: [Strong's #1672] Ἕλλην Hellēn.

The word refers to Hellens or Hellenized Jews. These were Greek-speaking Jews who grew up in Gentile lands, still a son of Abraham. Possibly a descendant of Jews who were among the Diaspora which occurred twice, the first time when Assyria conquered the ten northern kingdom tribes (722 BC), and the second time after Babylon conquered the two southern kingdom tribes in 586 BC.

What helps us to understand who these Hellenists were is found in verse 29 in which these mixed heritage Jews of Gentile descent that were born-again, Saul is saying that as long as they were a descendant of Abraham they were still heirs of the Abrahamic promises God made to Abraham for we know that non-Hebrew Gentiles were never promised anything of God except that God made covenant with Abraham as described in Genesis 12, 15, and 17.

If Saul wanted to identify "Gentiles" he would have used the Greek word for Gentile which is "ethnos."

Paul never stopped identifying as a Jew (Acts 21:39, 22:3) and the Bible clearly refers to people who are Greeks, Jews, slaves, or free, male, or female, so he was not denying the reality of these categories, but rather he was denying that they give someone a higher status when it comes to being in Christ.
