Studying and Applying God's Word

Once a year, on my birthday, i have 7 Layer Chocolate cake

And we all know that 7 is Heaven.
Actually this is the first time I've ever heard seven relating to heaven. I know Jesus said where to forgive each other 70 * 7 which I was always taught meant an unlimited number or amount of times.

Then I've heard that Severn represents completeness. Now with the information you provided I could see how 7 as being complete could very well be referring to heaven.

And if you add chocolate cake into the mix how could you possibly go wrong? We still need to do all things in moderation and not jump on the glutton bandwagon. But hey on your birthday... you can have all the cake you want.

The numbers 3 and 7 are God's Personal Signatures and it starts in Genesis and builds from there.

When you add 3 + 7 you get 10 = the 10 Commandments that only God is able to KEEP in His Bosom and by which He protects us.

i am not advocating going back to the Law for only God/Christ/Holy Spirit can Retain the 10 Commandments in PERFECTION

Therefore when the LORD came to earth he said:

Now behold, one came and said to Him, “Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?”

So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.
But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”

He said to Him, “Which ones?”

Jesus said, “‘You shall not murder,’ ‘You shall not commit adultery,’ ‘You shall not steal,’ ‘You shall not bear false witness,’ ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ ”

The young man said to Him, “All these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack?”

Jesus said to him, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.”

Brother Obadiah,

The LORD wants you to see something very Special in His dialogue with the young rich ruler.

Take another look in Post #26 and count the number of Commandments the LORD spoke.

Very few abandon themselves to Christ when studying the Word.

Very few have repented from the sin of 'respect of persons/partiality'.

Very few have embraced, loved, cherished with all their heart mind and soul what the LORD said to the disciples in John ch4 and Acts ch1.

Those 3 reasons are the main ingredients for division in the Body of Christ.
I agree that w/o the Spirit in all forms with which we worship God, then man is prone to err.

If we undertake to follow these 3 commands, love God, love our neighbor & love one another, is that all the fulfillment of the word ?
I think not!

There are many religionious denoms that cling to this motto and yet leave the completeness undone. They practice rituals or traditions based salvation thinking they are greatly moving forward by their own efforts.

2 Timothy 2:14-16
14 Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they STRIVE NOT ABOUT WORDS TO NO PROFIT, BUT TO THE SUBVERTING OF THE HEARERS.
15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
16 But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

If we study under the teacher, the Holy Spirit, then we cannot go wrong in our discipleship and be led around by the doctrines of men & devils. The word is sure and it's truths are for our sanctification unto God.

The lack of self searching the scripts thereof causes us to fall under leaders whom have their own agenda, which is usually the INCREASE without the GODLINESS of it's ppl. Man looks to keep his sins, for sin is comfortable, therefore they have itching ears and heap to themselves these teachers to appease this desire.

Many individuals can "quote" the Bible from Gen to Rev. yet have zero spiritual understanding of it's precepts bc they lack the Spirit to teach them.

We live in a difficult age for much doctrine has been corrupted by the RCC ( who lay claim to be Christ 1st church ) and the protestant reformers who desired to break away from the stagnancy of ritualistism.

IMO, there will NEVER be unity among the denominations but there is unity among those whom study the word and have arrived at a like-mindedness of it's truth.
We may not all stand in the same place of understanding but by the Spirit we will all in love, respect others above ourselves, being of an humble nature, as Christ was even until death !

@L.A.M.B. says: "there will NEVER be unity among the denominations"
i AGREE and so does the WORD

God never told us to unite around 'christianity''

The LORD Jesus Christ DID command us EXACTLY Who and What and Where we are to UNITE under = John ch17

But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he has immediately forgotten what kind of person he was. But one who looks intently at the perfect law, the law of liberty, and abides by it, not having become a forgetful hearer but an effectual doer, this man will be blessed in what he does.

James 1:22-25

Notice how James wrote, “Prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves” ( 1:22 ). James uses a substantive ( pōietai ) “doers of the word,” or “Word-doers” instead of a straightforward imperative (“do the word”). He is describing characteristic behavior, not occasional activity. So true believers cannot be hearers only but must apply it to our day-to-day lives.

One must know the word in order to apply it right?

So first of all We need a good study Bible of our favorite translation. Then and if you so desire, "electronic Bible software" can come in awfully handy. I prefer Logos Bible Software.

The books we accumulate over the years on various Biblical principles can come in quite handy also. There are so many different avenues available to us. Daily Devotional books, The Bible in a year.

The internet can be a good tool as long as you're careful about what your getting into. Discernment is the key in that area.

One other great activity is doing a live Bible study with your church members. We call ours home groups as we meet at each other's homes. I can't over emphasize the importance of a good home group. Not only do we study God's word together but we pray for one another and pray over what's going on in our families.

Last but not least is the time that we devote to God's word here at BAM. Hopefully we'll get some dialogue on this subject of "Applying God's Word".
Interesting how the "doers" are only described as deluded, forgetful and unblessed, but are not condemned. While it is not stated here, we are certain this is what has happened. But it occurs to ne that the "one verse doctrine'' posters could theoretically hold that view. Just musing here.

he told us to be holy in him.... John 17:21 "That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me."

Leviticus 19:2 "Speak unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, and say unto them, Ye shall be holy: for I the LORD your God am holy."

Leviticus 20:7 "Sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy: for I am the LORD your God."

and Micah 6:8 sum up the OT as well as the NT. "He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?"

Being "doers of the Word" refers to the Law of Moses as the New Testament wasn't a "bible" at this time.

James was an obedient "doer of the Law" especially after he became born again. James was also what one could call a Judaizer who not only was a "doer of the Law" but his position was to give born-again Gentiles certain aspects of the Law to obey:

19 Wherefore my sentence is, that we trouble not them, which from among the Gentiles are turned to God:
20 But that we write unto them, that they abstain from pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from things strangled, and from blood.
21 For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.
Acts 15:18–21.

Take a look at what James says... "For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him" meaning that Jews that became born again continued in obeying the Law of Moses and taught the brethren (Jewish Christians) to be zealous and obedient to the Law as recorded in Acts 21, which Luke writes took place around the time James wrote his letter to the twelve tribes scattered.

20 And when they heard it, they glorified the Lord, and said unto him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousands of Jews there are which believe; and they are all zealous of the law: Acts 21:20.

James writes to Jewish Christians of the twelve tribes of Israel that were "scattered" among Gentiles in Gentile lands:

JAMES, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.
James 1:1.

And along with being "doers of the Word" it is equally important to rightly divide (understand and interpret) the Word (Law.)

And let me also say that true, biblical Christianity is being "doers of the Law of Moses" which is what Jewish and Gentile Christians did which occurred after Pentecost (AD 32) until the destruction of the Second Jewish Temple some four decades later from Pentecost (AD 70.)

True, biblical Christianity, the Christianity Jesus taught is being "doers of the Law" and obeying His commandments (the Law.)

15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. Jn 14:15.

In other words, obey the Law of Moses which He taught the people.

Do you teach what Jesus and the apostles teach, or do you teach "another gospel"?

The law of love.

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. John 13:34

Love Fulfills the Law

8 Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law. 9 The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,”[a] and whatever other command there may be, are summed up in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[b] 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law. Romans 13:8-10

The commandments still stand. The laws against adultery, murder, theft and covetousness all add up to loving others as we love ourselves. When we love like this, we keep all God’s law in its true spirit.

The law of love.

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. John 13:34
Speaking and teaching the Jews, Jesus' the command to love each other is not new but an old command in Leviticus:
And notice the original command is given to the children of Israel in covenant with God and "brother" refers to a member of the same tribe, "neighbor" refers to a member of the tribe living next to you, and "children of thy people" refers to anyone of any tribe. God is love. And the God is love is God over the children of Israel and these commands are given specifically to them in covenant with God and at the time of the Tabernacle, and consider their (tribes) placement around the Tabernacle. Three tribes to the north, three tribes to the west, three tribes to the south, three tribes to the east, from the air making the shape of a cross.

17 Thou shalt not hate thy brother in thine heart: thou shalt in any wise rebuke thy neighbour, and not suffer sin upon him.
18 Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD. Leviticus 19:17–18.

And remember:

7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
8 Again, a new commandment I write unto you, which thing is true in him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shineth.
9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.
1 John 2:7–11.

34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.
John 13:34.

There can be no new commandments because Jesus did not come to change the Law (or add to it) but to fulfill what was already spoken and written by God, and that is those things under the Mosaic Covenant, a covenant Jesus came to fulfill which is now a new covenant in Him with the children of Israel, the people He came to redeem (Gal. 4:5.)

and this:

5 And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. 2 John 4–5.

Referring to the "beginning" is the Mosaic Covenant where the instruction and command of God to the children of Israel is to love each other.

23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. 1 John 3:23.

When Jesus Christ was manifest to Israel (John 1:31), He instructed the children of Israel of twelve tribes the Law of Moses. He didn't teach anything else or anything new. He cannot. Because everything God said was already said and was given as letter of the Law. What Jesus taught was the spirit of the Law of Moses to His covenant people the Jews. NOTHING as far as I can tell was ever commanded of Gentiles - especially anything having to do with love because Gentiles were not and are not His people (Matt. 1:21.)

Yes, love fulfills the Law in Leviticus 19:17-18. That's what is meant and that is the subject matter at hand.
Monogamy also fulfills the Law. Keeping your promises fulfills the Law. Being honest and not bearing false witness fulfills the Law. Not having other gods before you fulfill the Law. Honoring your father and mother fulfills the Law. Do you see where I'm going? Don't be so wrapped up with love and remember, God never gave these commands to Gentiles.

The bible teaches us a lot about faith. like the hall of faith. But I think the most important thing is how the Bible uses the phrase “faith in Jesus” synonymously with belief in Jesus as Savior.

Faith in Jesus is more than passive belief. It means to trust Him, obey His commandments, and follow His example. It also means to rely on Him as Savior and Lord, and to accept His death and resurrection as the way to eternal life. Faith in Jesus is based on the truth of God's Word and the gospel.

To become aware of having any faith at all is to have some idea of its meaning. Christian faith, I believe carries with it a measure of understanding at the outset. This understanding of faith’s meaning develops within us in much the same way as a language is learned.
learn what faith is all about from countless daily encounters with their Christianity—formal and informal, planned and unplanned.

This understanding of faith, disseminated by the church and assimilated by its members in their daily lives, is called embedded theology. The phrase points to the theology that is deeply in us.

In the religious language we use, or what I like to call embedded theology is often known as first-order theology or the language we Christians use, being made up of the most immediate and direct testimonies to the meaning of faith. It is rooted (embedded) in the way we discuss Christianity. Also embedded in what we posed here. It is the implicit theology that we live out in their daily lives.

All Scripture agrees with this. The "Way of the Lord" is a way of Life. A commitment to God and HIS Righteousness, not our own. Jesus walked in this WAY all His Life, and other examples of men of faith also turned to God and submitted themselves to the Way of the Lord as well.

1 John 2: 5 But "whoso" keepeth "his word", in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. 6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself "also so to walk", even as he walked.

"Hereby know we"!!

If we are walking in the Righteousness and Judgments of God, He is in us. If we are walking in the religious traditions and doctrines of this world's religions, He is not in us. So simple even a child can understand.

When asked about the future by His Disciples, Jesus said

Matt. 24: 4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. 5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I (Jesus) am Christ; and shall deceive many.

It seems important to point out that Jesus isn't concerned about satan worshippers, or Islam or even Atheists here. He is most concerned about a future in which "many" will come in His Name, calling Him Lord, Lord, but are deceiving people. This theme is apparent throughout the entire Bible.

Jer. 23: 16 Thus saith the LORD of hosts, Hearken not unto the words of the prophets that prophesy unto you: they make you vain: they speak a vision of their own heart, and not out of the mouth of the LORD. 17 They say still unto them that despise me, The LORD hath said, Ye shall have peace; and they say unto every one "that walketh after the imagination of his own heart", No evil shall come upon you.

Even EVE was deceived by a voice "Who professed to know God".

There is only ONE religion on this planet that "comes in Christ's Name", and that is "Christianity" in all it many different sects and businesses.

Paul warns of the same thing;

2 cor. 11: 12 But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we. 13 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, "transforming themselves" into the apostles of Christ.

And again;

Col. 2: 8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

So I am all about home study groups, but would advise against injecting other men's religious opinions, philosophies or traditions into our minds by reading other books, or sermons.

I have no doubt that God is clearly able to reveal Himself and His Truth through the holy Scriptures HE had written for "our admonition" for the purpose of "doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works".

If a man studies in obedience to the instruction given, as James teaches, this man shall know God's truth which will set him free.

But if a man studies and hears but doesn't "DO" the Sayings, but works iniquity, his house shall fall, and great will be the fall of it.

Jesus had Faith in His Father who HE called "the One True God". He was obedient to this God, trusting Him with His Life in all things. He lived by Every Word this God spoke, and instructed men to live by the same rule. Jesus commanded men be perfect, even as His Father and my Father are perfect, even as HE walked. It is this Faith that was in Christ, that Scriptures teach we are to Strive for. satan believes Jesus is Lord and Savior, but doesn't have the faith in God that was in Christ.

This "Faith" is rejected by this world and its religions. A person who is a friend of this world, is an enemy of the God and Father of the Lord's Christ.

As the Jesus "of the Bible" Himself teaches.

John 17: 3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

Paul also teaches.

2 Tim. 3: 15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which "is in" Christ Jesus. 16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

So I would "take heed" and "Beware" of the Faith which exists in this world's religions and choose instead to strive for the Faith that was in Christ Jesus, as Paul strived towards.

Phil. 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,

14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God "in Christ Jesus". 15 Let us therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in any thing ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.

Actually, the bible teaches us MOST about obedience the LORD.

For in obeying the LORD and His Christ as directed in John 14:15, "If ye love me, keep my commandments," this command is consistent throughout the bible in every faucet of a believer's life.

From the command to not eat from the forbidden tree in Genesis to Jesus' very words in John 14:15 to obey His commandments in everything we show our love for God, and this is the faith that results from our obedience.

In order to believe in God and to obey him you have to have faith. Most important thing the bible teaches us is To love God and our neighbor. That's definitely part of the teaching found in God's word that you need to apply in our daily lives.

That's what Jesus told the lawyer who asked him which of the commandments found in the law of Moses was the greatest.

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” This he said, “is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets” Matthew 22:36-40
