Those Jews of that remnant who were alive when Jesus started His ministry, naturally followed Jesus, their Messiah - John 1:41 Just because they kept the Law does not mean that they did not need the salvation of Jesus. In fact, Paul said that the Law was their schoolmaster to lead them to Christ. They did not earn salvation under the Old Covenant nor under the New Covenant. In both cases, they were saved by faith, by the grace of God, the same way ALL of mankind can be saved - from Adam on.

The scripture is clear that salvation can only occur by faith, without any works. Romans 4:5 After one is saved, God leads them to do good works, which God prepared beforehand so that they would walk in them. Ephesians 2:10

Cain was spiritually dead like we all were, so God counseled him:

"Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door; and its desire is for you, but you must master it."

I don't think there's any better counselor than God. So non-Christians need to do well and master their sin. By repenting of their sin - in Cain's case, his murderous anger - and putting their faith in God, trusting Him for forgiveness and cleansing.
