Old Testament saints

From reading scripture and listening to sermons, I had come to the conclusion that people have been saved the same way OT and NT.

OT looking forward to Christ's coming.. placing their faith in Him and being saved by grace through faith in Him.

NT looking at what He has done in the completed work of the cross.. looking back..placing their faith in Him..being saved by grace through faith in Him.

What I have also heard though..is that in the OT..while they were looking forward to Christ coming.. they were not indwelled by the Holy Spirit and were saved by works.

I have an issue with this in that Abraham is described as being made righteous before he offered up his son Isaac. He was justified before the offering.

Job also believed in a redeemer.

David also describes having faith in the redeemer.

If it was by works..what is the redemption for?
