Ephesians 2:8 salvation is the gift

Your theology is refuted here

Joshua 24:15–24 (NASB95) — 15 “If it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served which were beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” 16 The people answered and said, “Far be it from us that we should forsake the LORD to serve other gods; 17 for the LORD our God is He who brought us and our fathers up out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and who did these great signs in our sight and preserved us through all the way in which we went and among all the peoples through whose midst we passed. 18 “The LORD drove out from before us all the peoples, even the Amorites who lived in the land. We also will serve the LORD, for He is our God.” 19 Then Joshua said to the people, “You will not be able to serve the LORD, for He is a holy God. He is a jealous God; He will not forgive your transgression or your sins. 20 “If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, then He will turn and do you harm and consume you after He has done good to you.” 21 The people said to Joshua, “No, but we will serve the LORD.” 22 Joshua said to the people, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen for yourselves the LORD, to serve Him.” And they said, “We are witnesses.” 23 “Now therefore, put away the foreign gods which are in your midst, and incline your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel.” 24 The people said to Joshua, “We will serve the LORD our God and we will obey His voice.”

you need to have a theology based upon scripture.

Ezekiel 18:20–24 (LEB) — 20 The person, the one sinning, will die. A son shall not bear the guilt of the father, and a father shall not bear the guilt of the son. The righteousness of the righteous shall be on him; the wickedness of the wicked shall be on him. 21 But if the wicked returns from all of his sins that he has done and he keeps all of my statutes and he does justice and righteousness, he shall surely live; he shall not die! 22 All of his transgressions that he committed will not be remembered against him. Through his righteousness that he has done he shall live. 23 Have I delight by any means in the death of the wicked, declares the Lord Yahweh, and not at his turning from his way, so that he lives? 24 And when the righteous turns from his righteousness, so that he does injustice, and does all of the detestable things that the wicked do, then will he live because of all of his righteousness that he did? Those things will not be remembered because of his infidelity that he displayed, and because of his sin that he committed. Through them he shall die.

Deuteronomy 30:11–19 (LEB) — 11 “For this commandment that I am commanding you today is not too wonderful for you, and it is not too far from you. 12 It is not in the heavens so that you might say, ‘Who will go up for us to the heavens and get it for us and cause us to hear it, so that we may do it?’ 13 And it is not beyond the sea, so that you might say, ‘Who will cross for us to the other side of the sea and take it for us and cause us to hear it, so that we may do it?’ 14 But the word is very near you, even in your mouth and in your heart, so that you may do it. 15 “See, I am setting before you today life and prosperity and death and disaster; 16 what I am commanding you today is to love Yahweh your God by going in his ways and by keeping his commandments and his statutes and his regulations, and then you will live, and you will become numerous, and Yahweh your God will bless you in the land where you are going. 17 However, if your heart turns aside and you do not listen and you are lured away and you bow down to other gods and you serve them, 18 I declare to you today that you will certainly perish; you will not extend your time on the land that you are crossing the Jordan to go there to take possession of it. 19 I invoke as a witness against you today the heaven and the earth: life and death I have set before you, blessing and curse. So choose life, so that you may live, you and your offspring,

But you are omitting and forgetting that God has already clearly defined for us, over and over and over, who HE will have mercy on, and who He will not have Mercy on. Did God lie to me, in your religion?

I'm not here to promote the religious philosophies of one of this world's religious sects over another of this world's religious sects. I simply posted where God declared unto me that HE gives men a choice. The teaching that HE withholds from me the ability to make the choice is popular in some of this world's religious businesses and sects, but such a teaching is a wicked judgment against God in my view, and implies that God is a Liar whose words can not be trusted.

When offered the choice to believe God's Word, or the other voice in the garden God placed me in, I have learned to Trust God's Word. You are free to choose whatever voice you want. But for me, I have heard the voice of God. "Today, if you hear His Voice, harden not your heart". I would invite you to heed His advice. But it's your choice.

'Salvation Is The Gift' - Ephesians 2:8

(1) And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
( 2) Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world,
according to the prince of the power of the air,
the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

(3) Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh,
fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind;
and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

(4) But God, who is rich in mercy,
for His great love wherewith He loved us,

(5) Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved )
(6) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:
(7) That in the ages to come
He might shew the exceeding riches of His grace
in His kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

(8) For by grace are ye saved through faith;
and that not of yourselves:
it is the gift of God:

(9) Not of works, lest any man should boast.
(10) For we are His workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus unto good works,
which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.'

(Eph 2:1-10)

Hello @Walt,

All of those verses, that you quote, must be acknowledged: taking into account, who said it, to whom, and at what time, with what intent etc., but not in regard to the subject heading of this thread. For it is undeniably true that salvation itself is a gift of God to those who believe God regarding the person and work of His Beloved Son, and trust Him for full salvation, which is rich and free.

Praise His Holy Name!

Good morning @Walt,

Your Eph 2:8 You were saved by faith in God, who treats us much better than we deserve. This is God's gift to you, and not anything you have done on your own.

IMO, this verse is saying that after I learned about Jesus and placed my faith in what He did for me, I was saved by God’s grace. Salvation itself is God’s gift ~not something I earned or accomplished ~ and faith is simply the means by which I received that gift, not a work of my own.

Grace = God’s initiative
Faith = the means (instrument), not the cause
Salvation = the gift
Works = excluded as a basis or merit

The scriptures I listed use the words Eternal life, in my opinion, words about eternal life are relevant to the thread. 💖

Who paid the price for our Salvation? Jesus did. who gave us the free gift of Salvation? God did. Salvation is from Jesus and his Father, not us. Are we to ignore some of the scriptures because salvation is a free gift?

Hello @Walt,

How great is our God!

Every blessing

A man’s believing does not prompt salvation, for saving faith is given, it comes by the grace of God according to the will of God by which a man is saved. Believing comes in the package marked SALVATION BY GRACE. “But of Him are ye in Christ Jesus…That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord” (1 Cor. 1:30,31 cf. 2 Cor. 1:21,22). All saved people glory exclusively in the Lord: all that He is and all that He has done. “Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the Kingdom of His dear Son: In Whom we have redemption through His blood, even the forgiveness of sins” (Col. 1:12-14). “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ” (Eph. 1:3)

Eph 2:8 affirms that believing Faith comes in the package marked Salvation by Grace, nothing about it is of ourselves!

Greetings Walt,

Brother, is not who paid for our sins as much as who "SECURED" eternal life for God's elect by his faith and obedience.

Once more:

Ephesians 2:8

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:”

In Ephesians 2:8 we have a classic example of an metonymy. The only faith that saves us legally is the faith of Christ, for no man can have faith in God, the faith that meets the requirement of a Royal law, a faith that is produce by perfect obedience to its laws! Jesus Christ alone had the faith that honoured God's law in all points, from conception, to death, in thoughts, words, and deeds ~ and this faith alone is the means of man's free justification. This faith is not of ourselves, it is the gift of God secured for God's elect by our surety, Jesus Christ. This faith is given to us in regeneration when the Spirit of God creates a new man within us after the image of his Son, Jesus Christ.

When a man hears and believes, it is not the old man (for that is impossible) but his new man that is a creative work in God's elect by the almighty power of God~this birth happens to a child of God sometimes after conception and before death, and is evidenced by faith and obedience to the word of God. Two prime examples of this is John the the Baptist and the thief on the cross.

I could spend more time proving the metonymy in Ephesians 2:8 by the context in just before verse 8, in verses: 4-6..."But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus:"

We were IN CHRIST from all eternity, even while he lived in this world and in his death and resurrection, which secured our redemption for us. What he did, it was as though we did it, what happen to Christ happened to us legally speaking two thousand years ago.

@Red Baker

Ephesians 2:8

“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:”

“By grace you have been saved through faith… it is the gift of God.”

The passage clearly teaches that salvation is by grace and not by works.

Faith is the means through which that grace is received.

The text does not explicitly state that faith follows regeneration; it simply affirms that salvation is God’s gift, received through faith.
