At what point in John 1:12 were they “unsaved”?
Do the “unsaved” really have the AUTHORITY to become children of God?
Continuing
John 1:6–13 (NASB95) — 6 There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to
testify about the Light, so that all might
believe through him. 8 He was not the Light, but he came to
testify about the Light. 9 There was the
true Light which, coming into the world,
enlightens every man. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, and those who were
His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God,
even to those who believe in His name, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.
The overall context concerns belief in the true light, Jesus Christ.
True Light is truth. One can receive the truth, or one may not receive the truth.
His people, the Jews, did not receive him as the true light; that is, they did not believe in him overall.
John 10:24–26 (LEB) — 24 So the Jews surrounded him and began to say to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly!” 25 Jesus answered them, “I told you and you do not believe! The deeds that I do in the name of my Father, these testify about me. 26 But you do not believe, because you are not of my sheep!
Matthew 13:57–58 (LEB) — 57 And they were offended by him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own hometown and in his own household.” 58 And he did not perform many miracles in that place because of their unbelief.
Receiving him clearly did not refer to an indwelling of him, as one cannot even speak of an indwelling of Christ, or regeneration by the Spirit, before the cross.
John 7:38–39 (NASB95) — 38 “He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’ ” 39 But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given,
because Jesus was not yet glorified.
So we are back to the fact
John 1:12–13 (LEB) — 12 But as many as received him—to those who believe in his name—he gave to them authority to become children of God, 13 who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of a husband, but of God.
Those who believed in his name became children of God, and were born of him, the true light.
Contrary to Calvinism, man must first believe before they are regenerated, given life, born of God.
