1 There was a certain man in
Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band,
2 A devout man, and one that feared God with all his house, which gave much alms to the people, and prayed to God alway. Acts 10:1–2.
Caesarea was a Roman province and Gentile. Exactly the locations where God scattered His people when Israel and Judah were conquered and exiled into Gentile lands beginning in and around 722BC. By the time 522 BC arrived the Hebrew people were so intermixed with Gentiles many were grown up Gentile and heavily influenced by Greek thought and culture. From 522BC when Cyrus allowed Nehemiah to return with a remnant (10% of all Hebrews alive) the 90% remained in Gentile lands including Caesarea.
Historically, the only people that worshiped the God of Abraham were Hebrews who did not lose their Hebrew identity even if they were of mixed heritage like Cornelius for no non-Hebrew Gentiles were in relationship with God preferring their thousands of gods rather than the One True God. Scripture has already established God has covenant with Abraham and his seed and Cornelius would have to be of Abraham's seed despite the argument that Caesarea was Gentile, and this means Cornelius would therefore have to be Gentile (non-Hebrew.)
Cornelius feared God, was devout, gave much alms (a Hebrew term) to the people and prayed to God always. The only people that have relationship with God are Abraham and his seed. But there's more.
Peter was a Judaizer. Just as James was and Saul. Peter was chilling with a man named "Simon" (from Simeon, a Hebrew name.) Possibly a Hebrew because before Peter went up to the roof Peter would not chill with a Gentile if Simon was Gentile. Peter had not yet received his vision. Another thing was that mixed heritage Hebrews like Samaritans were still not having any dealings with Jews. Peter was one of those that had a bias against Gentiles or mixed heritage Hebrews. This might be the reason they met outside at the gate. But these devout mixed heritage Hebrews spent the night in a Hebrew home. If Gentile, this would not have occurred.
22 And they said, Cornelius the centurion, a just man, and one that feareth God, and of good report among all the nation of the Jews, was warned from God by an holy angel to send for thee into his house, and to hear words of thee. 23 Then called he them in, and lodged them. And on the morrow Peter went away with them, and certain brethren from Joppa accompanied him.
24 And the morrow after they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and had called together his kinsmen and near friends. Acts 10:22–24.
At this time in Jew-Gentile relations there were no Gentiles that had "good report among the nation of the Jews."
But there were mixed heritage Hebrews like another centurion who sent servants to Jesus to heal his beloved servant who was sick. Being mixed heritage and familiar with Hebrew customs and culture and religion that centurion respected Jesus was a Jew and also as with Samaritans had no dealings with the Jews, but this was no ordinary mixed heritage Hebrew. He was one that "loved our nation" and built a synagogue for them. The only people that love Israel was Israel. Even mixed heritage Israel. Also, the word "kinsman" comes from the word for "synagogue." Interesting, isn't it?
28 And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.
Acts 10:28.
Both non-Hebrew Gentiles and mixed heritage Hebrews shared the same attitude from Jews of much purer stock. The Jews knew it was unlawful for them to come into the house of a Jew. Now, two words are used here: "common" and "unclean." And we have two groups of people in which each word can apply and be used. Non-Hebrew Gentiles were "unclean," and mixed heritage Hebrews were "common" from which we get the word "Greek: "koinos" which is also used of the Greek language and mixed heritage Hebrews were influenced by Greek ("Hellenized") culture.
34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:
35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.
36 The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all
37 That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached;
38 How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. Acts 10:34–38.
Who are more willing and able to "work righteousness" except Hebrew people who have the Law which instructs in righteousness (2 Tim. 3:16-17.)? And the word "nation" hasn't lost its meaning which is given in Genesis 12, 15, and 17 when the Abraham Covenant was made and "nation" was used of those that "come out of thee" (Abraham - Gen. 17:6-7.) This means the descendants of Ishmael and Esau and Isaac, since these peoples "come out of thee" (Abraham) meaning seed of Abraham.
Another clue is Jesus Himself said, "
I am not sent but to the lost sheep of the House of Israel." Peter would not break Scripture and be sent to the lost goats of the house of Gentiles, would he? No, he would not. The message of Jesus is a message God gave to the children of Israel who were the seed of Abraham.
Those that Jesus healed and all that were oppressed of the devil were Jews - not Gentiles.
Now, if you can't see the Jewishness of this following passage....
39 And we are witnesses of all things which
he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree:
40 Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly;
41
Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead.
42 And
he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.
43
To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. Acts 10:39–43.
Gentiles would know nothing of "prophets" of Israel or Old Testament passages of God being judge of the living and the dead. All of these points serve to prove Cornelius was seed of Abraham. Mixed heritage but seed of Abraham nevertheless. Now, the creme ala creme.
44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? 48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
Acts 10:44–48.
#1. The Holy Spirit of Promise as Scripture records in Joel's prophecy was promised to Israel - not Gentiles.
#2. Even tongues were promised in Isaiah (28 ) to Israel.
#3. Who did John baptize in the Jordan River or where there was much water? As a priest and seed of Zachariah and Elizabeth, John would not baptize non-Hebrew Gentiles and neither would Peter. John baptized those that come from Judaea and Israel proper. In other words, John baptized Jews.
The Jews called the mixed heritage Hebrews in Samaria "Samaritans" and not "Jews." These mixed heritage Hebrews born and were the offspring from Jew-Gentile unions from everywhere else in Gentile lands were called "Gentile" by the Jews because they were from Gentile lands and Greek culture. But Cornelius knew of his Hebrew heritage and was seed of Abraham. There is no doubt Cornelius was a mixed heritage Hebrew.
And the points I brought out from the text added to the body of my thread concerning covenants between God and Abraham's seed prove Cornelius was a mixed heritage Hebrew.
