What is the Gospel

After John sees a vision of the 144,000 redeemed ones who “follow the Lamb wherever he goes” (Revelation 14:4), he sees three angels flying in midair. The first one “had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation, tribe, language and people” (verse 6). This is the only place in the Bible where the gospel is described as the “everlasting gospel” (KJV) or the “eternal gospel” (NIV).
The word gospel refers to the good news that Jesus Christ suffered death on the cross to obtain salvation for mankind and that He rose to life again, was exalted to the right hand of God in heaven, and awaits His return in majesty to consummate God’s kingdom. The fact that this message is “everlasting” is significant.
The vision in Revelation 14 in which the angel proclaims the everlasting gospel is a prediction of something that will happen in the tribulation. Before the seven final judgments—the seven bowls of Revelation 15–16—God will give all of mankind one last opportunity to turn from their sin and trust in Christ to receive His gift of eternal life. The angel broadcasts the everlasting gospel to the whole earth, “to every nation, tribe, language and people” (Revelation 14:6). No one is left out. The angel calls out in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water” (verse 7). After proclaiming the everlasting gospel through an angel, God will finish His work of judgment upon a sinful world.

The angel who proclaims the everlasting gospel is flying “in midair” (Revelation 14:6). The Greek word translated “midair” also means “zenith,” and that’s why other translations say the angel was flying “high overhead” (CSB) or “directly overhead” (NET). And the angel shouts the message with “a loud voice” (verse 7). The picture is of an angel in the highest possible place using the loudest possible voice to reach the maximum number of people with the good news of God’s salvation. God is appealing to mankind one final time to reject the lies of Satan and respond to the eternal truth of God.
The gospel is “everlasting” in that is an eternally unchanging message. False doctrines come and go, and new teachings are like wind and waves that toss the unsuspecting every which way (Ephesians 4:14). Especially chaotic and dangerous is the doctrine of the Antichrist and his false prophet in Revelation 13. Countering the lies and false teaching of the beast is the everlasting gospel in Revelation 14. The message of salvation through faith in Christ is eternal truth; it is as solid and unchanging as God Himself, and those who believe the gospel will reap everlasting benefits.got ?

'And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven,
having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth,
and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,
Saying with a loud voice,
.. 'Fear God, and give glory to Him;
.... for the hour of His judgment is come:
...... and worship Him
........ that made heaven, and earth,
.......... and the sea, and the fountains of waters.'

Hello @civic,

I hope your 'men's discipleship' session went well. :)
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my entry (#40) before you left.

Though the word gospel (or good news) is used in relation to the suffering, death and ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ, primarily': Yet there are several subjects connected with this good news. All are preached, according to the dispensations to which they belong. For example in this dispensation it is only, 'the gospel of the grace of God', which is to be preached (Acts 20:24), and he is accursed who now preaches a different gospel (Gal. 1:8). The gospel of the Kingdom was preached by John the Baptist, and by our Lord Jesus Christ, and by Peter, and it will yet be preached again in the Great Tribulation, after the Church of God has been taken away (Matt. 24:14), and replaced by 'the Everlasting Gospel'.

The everlasting gospel cannot be preached now, because now is the day of salvation and not the day of judgment which the everlasting gospel heralds. It's content is made clear in Revelation 14:7 (above). It is eternal in the sense that it belongs to the first and the last of the dispensations in which God deals with men. It goes back to the beginning, before the Law was given. It tells of God's claim as Creator; and not of Christ's work as Saviour, ' Now I know that thou fearest God' was God's word to Abraham (Gen. 22:12) . 'This do and live, for I fear God,' said Joseph (Gen. 42:18). So too with Job (1:1) and the Egyptian midwives (Ex. 1:17-21). The 'fearers of God' was a title specially given to proselytes from the Gentiles (Acts 13:16, 26),

The angel proclaiming the everlasting gospel refers to 'the hour' of his judgment having 'come'. It is God as 'Creator' that is proclaimed, and that by an angelic being and not by man. It is on the basis of God as Creator that worship is demanded. This is the first solemn warning sounded by the first of six angels.

The gospel is like a multi faceted diamond. The gospel is the diamond. The facets are the many aspects of the gospel. Depending upon which way you are viewing the diamond it can reflect a different color/aspect/light of the gospel. Its all still the gospel, the good news but there are many different teaching about that good news. There is only One Gospel yet many different aspects to that One Gospel. Just as there is only One Lord yet many different aspects to the One Lord taught in scripture, the same with the One God who is multi-Personal and more complex than the One Gospel. The same with there is only One Faith yet so many aspects to what Faith is in Scripture. There is a simple definition about the definition yet there is much complexity to how faith is lived and taught as a doctrine. The same with love.

hope this helps !!!

I would suggest that the day of judgement began some time ago. In Daniel 7 we ate shown a series of prophetic events involving predatorial powers rising among populous nations until...
KJV Daniel 7:9-10
9 I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire.
10 A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened.

The thrones being set are for those assisting in the opening of the books and judging the details therein. This is a pre-advent judgement. Such a judgement is essential, because when the Lord Jesus comes to take His bride home, the angels need to know who is lost and who is saved, for it is they who take active part in the final harvest.
We must also note that after this judgement, and during it, the little horn is still active on earth, and Daniel observed him until after the second coming when he was committed to the execution of the judgement previously decided. This pause in early proceedings in the prophetic narrative is seen elsewhere, but at the same point in the prophetic timeline.
KJV Daniel 7:20-28
20 And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows.
21 I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them;
22 Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; ...and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom. (The first part of this is the pre-Advent judgement, the second the second coming).
23 Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces.
24 And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings.
25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.
26 But the judgment shall sit, (pre-advent judgement)...and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end.
27 And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.
(Second coming).
28 Hitherto is the end of the matter. As for me Daniel, my cogitations much troubled me, and my countenance changed in me: but I kept the matter in my heart.

In other words, those 3 angels messages are relevant right now.

Subject Heading:- 'What Is The Gospel?'

Hello @civic,

Thank you for your response. :)

Yet the good news (gospel) which the Angel heralds on that yet future day (Rev.14:6-7}, is very different from that made known during the Lord's ministry, and that of the Twelve which followed, and will be preached again during the tribulation. It is very different also from the gospel message given to Paul, which extends to this present day. and should therefore be kept separate and distinct, in order to maintain the importance of the word of truth that it will herald to the people living in that day.

Good as your description of the gospel as a multi-faceted diamond may sound, it is not an illustration that is scriptural and is therefore not sound. So, forgive me, but I cannot agree with it.

Thank you

You don't have to agree since in Revelation is says it is the gospel- the good news, :) I'm just agreeing with scripture which is calling it the gospel.

What you appear to be failing to see, @civic, is that good news can take many forms, and be given for many reasons, and they should not all be brought under the same banner, just because the word of the banner is, 'The Gospel', which happens to mean 'good news'. They do not all have the same subject matter, nor are sent to the same people, or during the same time-scale.

The Everlasting Gospel is 'good news' for it will prevent those who receive it, from worshipping the beast.

:)

Thats what I have been saying and why I used the analogy of a diamond with its facets. :)

The Bible contains many examples of similes, which are comparisons with something that is actually very different, made using “as” or “like”1. Here are some examples of similes in the Bible12:
  • Wise as serpents = shrewd (Matt. 10:16)
  • As a hen gathers her chicks under her wings = to protect them from harm (Matt. 23:37)
  • They came up with their livestock and their tents like swarms of locusts (Judges 6:5)
  • The day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night (1 Thessalonians 5:2)
  • The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field (Matthew 13:44)
The Gospel is like a Diamond having many facets . :)

Hey look I'm not alone in my thinking that the gospel is multi- faceted :) @Complete

The Gospel Is Multi-Faceted

Luke informs us from the beginning (1:1–4) that his is not the only Gospel to have been written nor the only Gospel account that could be written (cf. John 21:25). Nevertheless, the church has always recognized the great gift that the third Gospel is to us. There are many beautiful and essential teachings of Jesus and pictures of the gospel that come to us from Luke alone.

You are right, the 3 angels messages, and 4 if you count Revelation 18, are absolutely the gospel, the very same gospel as that which was given as far back as the promise to Eve, that her seed would crush the head of the serpent. That same everlasting gospel was shown to the patriarchs, and given in pictorial form as a type in the sanctuary services of the annual Israeli religious calendar, and then given to the world through the Apostles and disciples of Jesus throughout the last 2000 years.

However, the times in which we live incorporate into that gospel truths that are only applicable to our age. The present judgement being carried out on behalf of the saints... The declaration that spiritual Babylon and her daughters have fallen... The warning against deception, against worshipping idols, and receiving the mark... All issues relevant only to our day... And preached by those against whom Satan is making war, (the remnant of her seed), those who are keeping the commandments of God and have the testimony of Jesus, the Spirit of prophecy. And that doesn't refer to literal Israel rebuking spiritual Babylon... Those messages come from spiritual Israel, the church, who stand as an open rebuke against heresy, apostasy, and idolatry.

Is there still a literal Israel of God as in the O.T. Israel and the ones Paul describes in Romans ? yes or no

The above sounds like Replacement Theology.

Hi @civic,

Yes, I agree that the gospel is multi-faceted. As the doctrine of Christ is also multi-faceted: but when an aspect of 'good news' is differentiated by a title, then I believe that it should be looked at in isolation in order not to love the specific truth that it is intended to convey. For in an earlier entry you placed 'The Everlasting Gospel' of Revelation under the same umbrella as all of the other gospel titles, thus robbing it of it's peculiarity and distinctive message, which is for that time alone. Each title is given with a purpose and reveals difference and should therefore be looked at separately. Such as 'The gospel of the grace of God', or 'The gospel of the Kingdom'.

Thank you

Then why didn't you like my Simile of the Multi- Faceted Diamond analogy?
Hi @civic, :)

For the reason I have given in my last entry really. For God gave many messages of good news. The gospel of the Kingdom is - 'good news', the gospel of the grace of God is also - 'good news', but each differs: 'The Everlasting Gospel' particularly. So to put them all together, and describe each as a mere facet of one is wrong. For they are distinct, and must not be merged and go un-discriminated, otherwise truth is lost.

If they are all called the good news , the gospel then they are all true and fall under the biblical doctrine of the gospel. Just like there are many different aspects under the doctrine of the Law. The Law could also be a multi faceted diamond as a simile. :)
