What is so good about the good news?

I listened to someone recently who made the comment “I believe in Joe Biden.”

What did the person mean by that? Was he saying that he believes Joe Biden exists? Surely. But why does he believe in Joe Biden?

Joe Biden doesn’t just stand still and do nothing. He speaks and he acts.

“I believe in Joe Biden” is an expression of faith in what Joe Biden says and in what Joe Biden does. He’s the right person for the job, according to the man I was listening to.

I don’t believe in Joe Biden.

I believe in Jesus of Nazareth. Certainly I believe he exists but I believe in him because of what he says and what he does. He is, in a manner of speaking, the right man for the job.

“Spend your energy seeking the eternal life [the life of the age to come] that I, the Son of Man, can give you. For God the Father has sent me for that very purpose. They replied, ‘What does God want us to do?’ Jesus told them, ‘This is what God wants you to do: Believe in the one he has sent.’”

(John 6:26-29)

Brackets are mine.

God is the Father.
Jesus of Nazareth is the one whom the Father sent.
Believing in Jesus of Nazareth is believing what he says and believing what he does.

“The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, ‘All the nations will be blessed in you.’”

(Galatians 3:8)

“For the promise to Abraham or to his seed that he should be heir of the world …”

(Romans 4:13)

Who is the seed of Abraham?

”Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, ‘And to seeds,’ as referring to many, but rather to one, ‘And to your seed,’ that is, Messiah”

(Galatians 3:16)

The seed is Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah. The Messiah is the heir of the world. The earth is his by promise from God. That’s gospel.

More gospel:

”And if you belong to Messiah, then you are Abraham’s seed, heirs according to promise.”

(Galatians 3:29)

Those who belong to Messiah will also inherit the world.

”Blessed are the meek for they will inherit the earth.”

(Matthew 5:5)

The gospel includes the land promise made to Abraham, to Jesus, and to all who belong to Jesus.

“Land is a central, if not the central theme of biblical faith.”

(Walter Brueggeman, The Land, p. 3)

Billy Graham taught me some good things, but he never taught me this.

The land / the earth is promised by God to Jesus and to his followers. That’s an essential part of the gospel message.

What’s good about the gospel? Inheriting the earth.

When will we receive what was promised?

Some knoweth not what they speaketh

Below we see Dr Billy Graham is full support of the Jews in Israel as promised by God in Scripture in their own land. Gods chosen people in the land of Israel.

“I have made the earth, the men and the beasts which are on the face of the earth by my great power and by my outstretched arm, and I will give it to the one who is pleasing in my sight.”

(Jeremiah 27:5)

Who is pleasing in God’s sight? Jesus of Nazareth (Matthew 3:17).

Only Jesus of Nazareth? No. Also those who belong to Jesus of Nazareth.

God will give the earth to Jesus and to Jesus’ followers, precisely as he promised Abraham.

God hasn’t promised us heaven (which is what Billy Graham taught me). God has promised us the land, the earth.

What is so good about the gospel? It is God’s gospel. It’s God’s good news. God has promised it and God will bring it to pass.

There is the inconsistent gospel that changes directions with every wind of doctrine and there is the One True Gospel, the Only Gospel by which men are saved. B.A.M. by civic.

Shall we listen to the traditions of men that Jesus warned us about and the philosophies of men that Paul warned us about or solely upon the inspired words Scripture ?

You decide- but for me and my house we will serve the Lord ( Jesus ) and obey His Holy Word, the Word of the Lord.

hope this helps !!!

Dr. Graham edited for no quote provided.

If he were alive today (my Baptist family members believe he is alive, in heaven, polishing rainbows, etc. - he’s not) and I was able to speak with him, I would ask - Why didn’t you know that the saints will rule the world, the earth, the land when we inherit it? Why didn’t you know that essential component of the gospel?

I had the honor of preaching at my paternal grandmother’s funeral. Her pastor - who was also my pastor when I was a Southern Baptist - also preached at her funeral. He spoke first and told those in attendance all about wht my grandmother was doing in heaven - baking, gardening, sewing, catching up with old friends and rejoicing with family members, including my grandfather, who went on ahead of her. Billy Graham would have been proud of him.

When it was my turn to preach I preached the gospel of the kingdom and the promise God made to Abraham and to his seed. I preached on 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18. The Baptist preacher wasn’t pleased about it.

“Therefore, repent and return, so that your sins may be wiped away, in order that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord; and that he may send Jesus, the Messiah appointed for whom heaven must receive until the period of restoration of all things about which God spoke by the mouth of his holy prophet from ancient time.

(Acts 3:20-21)

An echo of the parable of the sower: SHURF - repent and return so that you will be forgiven.

What’s good about the good news /the gospel?

The restoration of all things -> a return to the garden from which man was expelled.

“and [Jesus Messiah] has made us to be a kingdom, priests to his God and Father …”

(Revelation 1:6)

”You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God, and they will reign upon the earth.”

(Revelation 5:10)

What’s so good about the good news?

Those who belong to Messiah are royalty; they will reign upon their inheritance - the earth, the land.

“It was the Lord who first told people how to be saved. Then those who heard him told us the true way.”

(Hebrews 2:3)

The Lord Jesus Messiah told people how to be saved -> by preaching the gospel.

Recommendation. Read and commit to memory the parable of the sower; remember the acronym SHURF.

“Simon Peter spoke up. ‘Master, he said, ‘who can we go to? You’re the one who has the life-giving words of the age to come! We’ve come to believe it - we’ve come to know it! - that you are God‘s holy one.’”

(John 6:68, NTFE)

Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah, has the life-giving words -> the gospel that he preached.

The way to the age to come is through seeing, hearing, understanding, believing and repenting in response to the preaching of the gospel of the kingdom.

“I have not spoken on my own, but the Father who sent me has commanded me what to say and how to say it. “

(John 12:49)

Jesus of Nazareth preached “the word, the gospel, the gospel of the kingdom, God’s gospel” which his God, the Father commanded him to preach.

”For I have given them the words which you gave me, and they have received them.”

(John 17:8)

(John 6:26-29)

God is the Father.
Jesus of Nazareth is the one whom the Father sent.
Believing in Jesus of Nazareth is believing what he says and believing what he does.
Not only believing what He says and does, but doing what He says, and copying His example .. Doing what He does.

“I’m telling you the solemn truth: anyone who hears my word, and believes in the one who sent me, has the life of God’s coming age.”

(John 5:24, NTFE)

The word Jesus speaks, the gospel, is the word of his God and Father. To believe in Jesus is to believe in the word which God commissioned him to speak.

What’s so good about the good news?

We already have mortal life. This word, the gospel, is the seed of immortal life.

Hebrews 1:1-3

God...Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Words have power. What are we attempting to convey with our conversation, our quotes of scripture, and the context in which we place them?
The verses quoted above reveal a distinct truth: the Son of God is a reflection of the character of the Father. Thus Jesus is not a different representation of the God of the old testament. The God of the old testament is of the same gentle, loving, understanding, gracious, merciful, just and good nature that Jesus expressed throughout His ministry on earth. Many however, when they read the OT, see a different picture. They believe the Father is of a much sterner character than the Son. They believe the Father is impatient, quick to judge, eager to inflict punishment, and looking for fault and failure in order to give Him opportunity to criticise, punish, requiring even destruction and death. For anyone hoping to share the gospel with anyone, the above misunderstanding regarding who God is, and what He is like, needs to be cleared up. We cannot share the gospel with power when the attitude we show, and the words we share, reveal a God who doesn't exist.

1 Samuel 15:22

And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

So why sacrifice? Why does God require sacrifice and the shedding of blood in order to make good our relationship with Him? Or does He? We see above Samuel questioning that concept. Does God delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices? The answer is no. He prefers obedience.

Psalm 50:9-11

I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds.

For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills.

I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.

You cannot give God anything. He already owns everything, every creature on earth belongs to Him.

Psalm 51:16,17

For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering.

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

God does not want sacrifice. He takes no delight in burnt offering.

Isaiah 1:11-13

To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto Me? Saith the Lord: I am full of the burnt offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he goats.

When ye come to appear before Me, who hath required this at your hand, to treat My courts?

Bring no more vain oblations; incense is an abomination to Me; the new moons and the Sabbaths, the calling of assemblies I cannot away with; it is iniquity, even the solemn meeting.

Sacrifices and offerings are an exercise in futility and vanity. Even sin.

Micah 6:6-8

Wherewith shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before the High God? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old?

Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousand of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?

Is that the next logical step if God demands sacrifice? Offering our children?

Jeremiah 19:1-5

Thus saith the LORD, Go and get a potter’s earthen bottle, and take of the ancients of the people, and of the ancients of the priests;

And go forth unto the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is by the entry of the east gate, and proclaim there the words that I shall tell thee,

And say, Hear ye the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah, and inhabitants of Jerusalem; Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, the which whosoever heareth, his ears shall tingle.

Because they have forsaken me, and have estranged this place, and have burned incense in it unto other gods, whom neither they nor their fathers have known, nor the kings of Judah, and have filled this place with the blood of innocents;

They have built also the high places of Baal, to burn their sons with fire for burnt offerings unto Baal, which I commanded not, nor spake it, neither came it into my mind:

If the offering of your children to God never at any time entered even into the mind of God, how are we to understand Genesis 22? The request by God to Abraham, to offer as a burnt sacrifice on an altar “the son whom thou lovest”, is clearly a problem, and one which we need to understand before we can make any progress in informing others that God is a God of love and mercy.

Genesis 22:1,2.

And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.

And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.

If we read other scriptures, it is clear that such practices in the nations of Canaan and surrounding areas were common. Here is one example where Moses is warning Israel of the temptations that will face them when living in their new land...

Deuteronomy 12:30,31

Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? Even so will I do likewise.

Thou shalt not do so unto the Lord thy God: for every abomination to the Lord, which He hateth, have they done to their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.

So here is Abraham in the midst of nations whose practices are such that depict gods who are bloodthirsty and demanding. And Abraham hears the voice of God telling him to do likewise as his neighbours. Moses does not inform us as to the emotional state of Abraham at the time. Moses' narrative is very simple, and does not venture into what Abraham was thinking and the emotional turmoil that he must have been experiencing. The love and care that God had shown Abraham previously is about to go up in smoke. “Surely not. You are one of those gods?” Yet Abraham obeyed. God had previously promised Abraham several times that from Isaac, there would be nations, even kings. Descendants and land. Abraham still believed, and he expressed that faith when he said to his servants, “I and the lad will come again unto you”. Isaac's question, which Abraham must have been dreading, “where is the lamb for the burnt offering”, elicited from his father one of the purest expressions of the gospel in the OT.

And in the Hebrew language can legitimately be expressed...

“God will provide a lamb, Himself, for a burnt offering”.

We know the story. But the question remains, why? Why go through this exercise if God didn't intend at the time for Abraham to do as God requested?

I think that simply telling Abraham “ I am different from those gods. I am a God of love” was not enough. What God was essentially revealing to Abraham was

“I am not that kind of God”.

The gospel is not such as we are to offer something to God in order to atone or please God that we may earn forgiveness. Righteousness by faith...keeping covenant with God...the story of the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation...the everlasting gospel that we are to share with all our neighbours, friends, work mates strangers and relatives, is a gospel of grace, a gospel in which it is indeed very good news whereby God has done everything necessary to accomplish our fullest and complete salvation, and all we are required to do is believe it. There is nothing we can offer, not even our own flesh and blood, that can in any way improve, or make any more certain that we are fully redeemed and set free from all condemnation. The power of sin...the power of the enemy over us...the condemnation of the law, they are all broken.

By grace are we saved through faith, and not of works. Lest anyone should boast. Ephesians 2:8

Abraham believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness. Genesis 15:6.

In Genesis 15 we read the story of the confirming of the covenant that God made with Abraham. God Himself passed between the pieces of animals (a contextually relevant practice of the time) and it was as if God was saying, “If I break my covenant that I am making with you, then let me be as these broken creatures”. God did not require Abraham to make any Promise. All Abraham had to do was believe, And that is all we are required to do. And Israel, when they broke the covenant, what did God do? He allowed Himself to be broken in our stead.

“God will provide a Lamb, Himself, for a burnt offering”.

That is the God we love and serve. That is the God of the Bible. That is the story of scripture.

That my friends, is the gospel.

PS. There is a number of nuances that are relevant to the sacrificing of children to false idols. Anything that takes precedence over God, is an idol. That includes sports. Extreme and otherwise. If, because of your encouragement and support, your son, an expert now in paragliding, is killed because his wings failed to open, have you sacrificed the life of your son for the sake of the idol you both worshipped? Just thinking out loud. A life devoted to any sport, from soccer to surfing, baseball to football, can waste the life and cost one his salvation. I think I'm treading on a few toes now.

KJV Revelation 14:6-12
6 And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people,
7 Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.
8 And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication.
9 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand,
10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:
11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.
12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

The gospel and obedience to the commandments of God are not antithetical. The law of God is grace. It is a safety zone for man to stay within in order to keep healthy, live long lives, be effective in witness, demonstrate faith, exercise loyalty and love, not sin.

Loving God results in a desire to obey God

Loving God results in a desire to obey God
Exactly he's our heavenly father we love him and want to please him the easiest way to do that is with our behavior. God instituted Marriage and Families and set up guidelines. Honor your mother and father. We do that by being obedient are we going to be perfect at it...no.
