Thoughts Concerning The Heart, Mind, Soul

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.
Proverbs 4:23

The Bible reveals subtlety, range, and depth in its distinctive message about the heart—one that diverges sharply from ancient Greek philosophy, as well as from modern and postmodern philosophies. These differences should not be ignored—as they often are in Christian literature—in favor of the colloquial and anti-intellectual ways that Western popular culture speaks of the heart. The heart merits the careful study of Scripture. In fact, I hope to persuade you that the word “heart” is the most important word in the Bible to describe who you are within.

Connecting the Spirit and the Mind with the Word of God . A check up from the neck up! The Mind is a Battlefield.

Battlefield means the field or ground upon which a battle is fought. 2. and area of contention, conflict, or hostile opposition.” A battlefield is a place of hostile opposition. A battlefield is a place where battles are won and lost. Everyday – every moment – there is a battle going on in our minds between right and wrong, good and bad, God’s way or Satan’s way, the Spirit or the flesh. It is our wills that determine who wins control of our minds, and because actions follow thoughts, ultimately who wins control of our very lives

The enemy attacked Eve in her mind/reasoning and tried the same with Jesus. He tried to cause doubt with Gods word and succeeded with Eve (did God really say? And you will not surely die) and he failed with Jesus. He attacks us today in the same way. The sword of the spirit which is the word of God is our only offensive weapon and defense against our enemy. Jesus did not use Hid Divine power as God to defeat satan, He used the same means we have at our disposal to defeat the enemy- the Word of God!

1-We must know Gods Word- Jesus used Gods word against the enemy.

2-We must memorize Gods Word. Ps 119:11, Ps 37:31, Ps 40:8

3- We must meditate on Gods Word- Joshua 1:8, Ps 1:2, Ps 119:147-48

4- We must use Gods Word- John 14:26. It is written was Jesus’ response. Matt 4:1-11

5- We must train ourselves in Gods Word- discipline, training, practice. 1 Tim 4:7, 1 Cor 9:25-27, 2 Tim 2:1-7.

Sow a thought and you reap an action; sow an act and you reap a habit; sow a habit and you reap a character; sow a character and you reap a destiny.” Our destiny is tied directly to and starts with our thoughts.

Romans 8:5-14-
Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. 6 The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. 7 The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law, nor can it do so. 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ. 10 But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness. 11 And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.12 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God

Colossians 3:1-10- Therefore, if you have been raised with Christ, keep seeking the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on the things that are above, not on the things that are on earth. 3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be revealed with Him in glory.5 Therefore, treat the parts of your earthly body as dead to sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. 6 For it is because of these things that the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, 7 and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them. 8 But now you also, rid yourselves of all of them: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene speech from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, since you stripped off the old self with its evil practices, 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created it

1 Peter 1:13-16 Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. 14 As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. 15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.

Galatians 5:16-18- So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.

1 Corinthians 2:9-16- However, as it is written:
“What no eye has seen,
what no ear has heard,
and what no human mind has conceived”—
the things God has prepared for those who love him—
10 these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit.

The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words. 14 The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit. 15 The person with the Spirit makes judgments about all things, but such a person is not subject to merely human judgments, 16 for,

“Who has known the mind of the Lord
so as to instruct him?”

But we have the mind of Christ.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. 5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Romans 12:1-2-Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Ephesians 4:17-25-Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. 20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

Philippians 2:1-5 Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, 2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. 3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, 4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus:

Philippians 4:8-Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things.

Proverbs 4:23- Be careful how you think; your life is shaped by your thoughts.

Proverbs 23:7
- As a man thinks in his heart so is he. Cf Deut 4:9, Proverbs 4. Col 3:23, Prov 22:29

It’s a Matter of the Heart, what consumes your heart?

2
-A man speaks from what fills his heart- Luke 6:45. Where your treasure is there you heart will be also. Matthew 6:21

3
-Jesus said to the church in Ephesus: I have this against you- you have left your first love, therefor remember from where you have fallen, repent and do the things you did at first- Revelations 2:4-5- “Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem: “This is what the LORD says: “’I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved me and followed me through the wilderness, through a land not sown. Jeremiah 2:2

4
-What was it like when you first came to Christ and experienced His love? Remember what it was like when you pursued your first love or the one you married? How much time did you spend together? Asking questions getting to know each other better? Finding out what she liked, disliked, pleased her, made her happy, the things you did together, etc…… Those are the same types of things in our relationship with Jesus we should consider. That 1st love , seeking to spend time with our Lord getting to know Him through His word, prayer, fellowship, growing in our relationship with Him.

5- The hearts condition: The heart is desperately wicked who can understand it. Jeremiah 17:9. the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight Proverbs 3:5-6. Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:1-2. Galatians 5:17. How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Your word.10 With all my heart I have sought You; Do not let me wander from Your commandments.11 Your word I have treasured in my heart, That I may not sin against You. Psalm 119:9-11

Appearing just under 1,000 times, the word “heart” is used in the Bible more than any other for the inner self. The Old Testament uses the Hebrew terms לֵב (leb) 598 times and לֵבָב (lebab) 252 times, and the New Testament’s Greek word καρδια (kardia) appears 156 times.

Something that occurs that often in the Bible certainly merits a study worthy of its dignity. Think of the fact that the word “holy” is used to describe God more than any other term. Is this significant? Of course it is. In the same way, the frequent occurrences of the word “heart” in Scripture deserve to be taken seriously.

The spotlight is often placed on the heart for its crucial role in what you treasure and say and in your inner beauty, repentance , faith, service, obedience, covenant faithfulness, worship, love, daily walk (Isa. 38:3), and seeking of the Lord most of which you are to perform “with all your heart”. To draw near to God “without our heart is to pretend devotion,” since God will not accept anything from us if it is not given from the heart.

It all starts with the heart. The Scripture presents the heart not just as a unity but also as a trinity of spiritual functions: the mind, the desires, and the will. To put it another way, the heart includes what we know, our knowledge, thoughts, intentions, ideas, meditation, memory, imagination.

What we love, what we want, seek, feel, yearn for, and what we choose, whether we will resist or submit, whether we will be weak or strong, whether we will say yes or no. No other word “combines the complex interplay of intellect, sensibility, and will.

1
-As a man thinks in his heart so is he – Proverbs 23:7

Psalm 119:9-11

hope this helps !!!
1 Corinthians 2 passage is a statement and defense of Paul's (and the other apostles' and prophets') divinely inspired knowledge and revelation. In that passage, the natural man is any other than one divinely inspired while the spiritual man is a divinely inspired man. Neither you, me nor any other today is such a spiritual man. Neither you, me nor any other today has the mind of Christ. The mind of Christ is not divided as are today's minds or any minds not divinely inspired.

So are you saying we cannot walk in the spirit , be filled with the spirit and bear the fruit of the spirit which are all commands in the NT ?

The heart and mind work together. When we accept Jesus as our Lord as Savior we need a "Circumcision of the heart."

"Circumcision of the heart" is a biblical metaphor, primarily in the Old Testament and New Testament, referring to an inward spiritual transformation where a person's heart is cleansed, softened, and made receptive to God's will, removing spiritual stubbornness to truly love and obey God, rather than just a physical ritual. This spiritual renewal is seen as a deeper fulfillment of the covenant promise, often described as a work of the Holy Spirit, making one a true follower of God.

Until we receive a new heart scripture specifically instructs us not to follow after our hearts. Numbers 15:39 commands us not to follow after our own hearts but to seek after the commandments of the Lord. Proverbs 28:26 says, “He who trusts in his own heart is a fool.”

We need the heart of Christ formed in us.

The heart left to its own devices is not to be trusted. Clearly the heart must not become the decision maker in our lives. Feelings change with daily body chemistry—what you ate for breakfast, how much sleep you got the night before, or whether your spouse picked on you today. Hardly the stuff of solid decision making!

In fact,
The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly perverse and corrupt and severely, mortally sick! Who can know it [perceive, understand, be acquainted with his own heart and mind]?
10 I the Lord search the mind, I try the heart, even to give to every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his doings. Jeremiah 17:9–10

What an extreme statement! Although every aspect of the human condition has fallen from its original glory, the Scriptures tell us that the heart is more deceitful than any other part of us, more likely to mislead and more likely to misrepresent itself and to tell lies. Left to itself, the heart is the most selfish and, therefore, the most dishonest instrument we possess.

So are you saying we cannot walk in the spirit , be filled with the spirit and bear the fruit of the spirit which are all commands in the NT ?
Only through the indwelling Holy Spirit, not through the signs, wonders and miracles empowering Holy Spirit. I am almost certain that you do not consider yourself to be either a divinely inspired apostle or prophet of God. Paul was and 1 Corinthians 2 is a statement and defense of that fact.

I sure don’t but I do believe we can walk in the spirit bearing the fruit of the spirit and when we do that’s having the mind of Christ.

I sure don’t but I do believe we can walk in the spirit bearing the fruit of the spirit and when we do that’s having the mind of Christ.
No that is not the mind of Christ. Too many try to use 1 Corinthians 2 in support of the doctrine of illumination, the doctrine that the saved have direct revelation from God. That is a terribly false doctrine. Two people both claiming to have the mind of Christ can differ significantly on biblical truths. That is simply not possible. I believe there are Calvinists who in spite of some of their false beliefs are indeed children of God. But clearly they and a non-Calvinist cannot both have the mind of Christ.

Obviously 2 people with the opposite views cannot both have the Mind of Christ at the same time since one or both could be wrong. But I believe you are incorrect about walking in the spirit bearing the fruit of the spirit which would be the same as being imitators of Christ and having His mindset. I’ll get back to this later when I have more time.

I will anxiously await your further comments. I would suggest that you study carefully 1 Corinthians 2. It begins with a declaration of the testimony of God (v.1). He speaks of his speech and his message being a demonstration of the Spirit in the power of God (vv. 4-5). He continues speaking of imparting a secret and hidden wisdom of God (vv.6-7). Clearly, that is affirmation of his divinely inspired revelation. not something received through man but directly from God. He reinforces that in v.11 by saying that "no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God" and that we (he and other divinely inspired apostles and prophets) impart words taught by the Spirit , It is in those words taught by the Spirit that the spiritual truths are given (v.13). It is there that he establishes who are the spiritual ones. It is those taught directly by the Spirit. It is those who receive the divinely inspired revelation directly from the Spirit. He, Paul, understands the things of the Spirit of God because they are spiritually discerned and that is what he imparts to the natural persons. As he proclaims we (he and the other divinely inspired apostles and prophets) has the mind of Christ and it is through that mind of Christ that they impart in words taught by the Spirit.

The Scripture presents the heart not just as a unity but also as a trinity of spiritual functions: the mind, the desires, and the will. To put it another way, the heart includes what we know. Our knowledge, thoughts, intentions, ideas, meditation, memory, imagination. What we love what we want, seek, feel, yearn for, and what we choose. Our hearts tell us what we will resist or submit, whether we will be weak or strong, whether we will say yes or no. Nothing but the heart can combine the complex interplay of intellect, sensibility, and will.

Psalm 51:10-12 Create in me a clean heart, O God; And renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; And take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; And uphold me with thy free spirit.

We see elsewhere Paul, Peter, James and John say all spiritual wisdom is available to believers. In fact he says so in the previous chapter below:

1 Corinthians 1:5-6
I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. 5 For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge— 6God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you.

2 Corinthians 1:21-22
Now it is God who establishes both us and you in Christ. He anointed us, / placed His seal on us, and put His Spirit in our hearts as a pledge of what is to come.

2 Corinthians 8:7
But just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness, and in the love we inspired in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.

Colossians 1:9
For this reason also, since the day we heard this, we haven’t stopped praying for you. We are asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding,

Colossians 2:2-3
that they may be encouraged in heart, knit together in love, and filled with the full riches of complete understanding, so that they may know the mystery of God, namely Christ, / in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Ephesians 1:7-8
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace / that He lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.

Ephesians 1:17
that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation in your knowledge of Him

2 Peter 1:2-3
Grace and peace be multiplied to you through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. / His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.

James 1:5
If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you

James 3:17
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.

1 John 2:20
You, however, have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.

1 John 2:27
And as for you, the anointing you received from Him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But just as His true and genuine anointing teaches you about all things, so remain in Him as you have been taught.

conclusion: the mind of Christ is synonymous with the Spirit of Christ, the Holy Spirit who dwells in all believers. God gives believers all spiritual wisdom, knowledge and understanding generously so that we can know the truth and stand firm in the truth living in the power of the Holy Spirit, walking in the spirit, bearing the fruit of the spirit, not quenching the spirit having the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:16- But we have the mind of Christ.

I will close with this from Paul in Philippians 2:5- Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus

hope this helps !!!

I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. 5 For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge— 6God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you.
That is speaking of Paul's knowledge in the testimony given the church about Christ. It is not an affirmation of the readers being given all knowledge.
2 Corinthians 1:21-22
Now it is God who establishes both us and you in Christ. He anointed us, / placed His seal on us, and put His Spirit in our hearts as a pledge of what is to come.
The "us" is Paul and Timothy (2 Cor 1;1). The "you" are the people of the church. It is Paul and Timothy that were established, anointed sealed and given the Spirit.
2 Corinthians 8:7
But just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness, and in the love we inspired in you—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.
The first 15 verses of the eighth chapter is Paul's encouragement to the church in Corinth. It is an appeal to them to continue to improve and increase in everything. It is not a statement that they had accomplished it already.

(ISV) 2Co 8:7 Indeed, the more your faith, speech, knowledge, enthusiasm, and love for us increase, the more we want you to be rich in this work of kindness.
Colossians 1:9
For this reason also, since the day we heard this, we haven’t stopped praying for you. We are asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding,
Well of course, Paul is praying that they be fully blessed with all spiritual things. He is not stating that has been accomplished. He is commending them for the faith and love and praying for their continued efforts in these things.
Colossians 2:2-3
that they may be encouraged in heart, knit together in love, and filled with the full riches of complete understanding, so that they may know the mystery of God, namely Christ, / in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
Colossians 2:2

(ESV) that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God's mystery, which is Christ,

(ISV) Because they are united in love, I pray that their hearts may be encouraged by all the riches that come from a complete understanding of the full knowledge of the Messiah, who is the mystery of God.

That again is an appeal to the church to strive, to work, diligently to increase in knowledge and understanding. It is in no way a statement that they have achieved that already through divine inspiration by the Holy Spirit.
Ephesians 1:7-8
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace / that He lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.
The wisdom and understanding being spoken of there is Christ's wisdom and understanding, not that of the Ephesians. It is His grace, His wisdom, His understanding. He, Christ and His blood, is the basis of the redemption given the Ephesians.

I could continue on, but I will stop here. It seems clear that you are desperately trying to defend your belief in the false doctrine of illumination and in doing so are tending to misread and misunderstand other texts. Not matter how you wish to read those texts, we are not and have not been divinely inspired. That was reserved for the apostles and prophets. The Holy Spirit does not speak to us and teach us directly. The Holy Spirit has provided God's written revelation and in indwelling us the Spirit will help us to learn and understand. But He will not be instilling any knowledge and understanding directly.

I have never claimed or implied " inspiration" like the writers of scripture- thats your strawman. I said the fruit of the spirit, walking in the spirit, living in the spirit etc..... is synonymous with being an imitator of Christ, having the mind of Christ. setting ones mind on the things above where Christ is as per Colossians 3.

hope this helps !!!

No, @civic that is not my strawman. The strawman is the interpretation in 1 Corinthians 2:14-16 that the natural person is the unregenerated and the spiritual person is the regenerated. In truth the spiritual person is one such as Paul and the rest of the apostles and prophets who received revelation directly by the Holy Spirit. The natural person is all the rest who have received no such divinely inspired revelation. In verse 16 it is the spiritual person, the person receiving divinely inspired revelation, that is said to have the mind of Christ.

Now no matter what you think you have gleaned from other texts, the simple truth is that in verse 16, the "we" are Paul, and the other apostles and prophets of God; it is only they that verse 16 declares to have the mind of Christ.

@civic, I know that you are a devoted student of scripture. One of the basic principles in the study of scripture is to determine (1) who is speaking, (2) to whom he is speaking and (3) about whom or what he is speaking. That certainly is the case with 1 Corinthians chapter 2.

No I think you have limited the text, isolated it to give it a strict meaning, whereas I have provide many other scriptures that affirm the spiritual man , spiritually minded man is available to all believers.

You are conflating inspiration with living and walking in the spirit.

But as I have shown you in my reply #15, so many of the other scriptures that you provided do not, in fact, affirm what you are claiming.

But I will leave it there and you can believe as you will. I agree with too much of what you post to continue to pursue this. I am comfortable with thinking that you will acquiesce sooner or later.

Yes I was thinking this could be just semantics and not worth pursuing or dividing over. :)
