1Sa 8:4 Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah,
1Sa 8:5 And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations.
1Sa 8:6 But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD.
1Sa 8:7 And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.
As student of Scripture. It has long been obvious to me that many people just don't "listen/pay attention" to what they read. I've been guilty of this myself. Notice a HUGE turning point in the history of Hebrew people. Samuel is leading Israel. His sons are judges. Samuel's sons start taking bribes and showing preferential treatment in their judgements. The people get angry and instead of insisting the sons follow God, the people decide they want to "throw the baby out with the bath water". You know how excuses work. They decide they want to be like all the other nations in the world that have already abandoned God by establishing their own kings......
Most people ignore these verses of Scriptures. Sure they may read it but they haven't really studied or meditated upon these words in the context of knowing God. If you want to know God, you must look for HIM.... in the Scriptures. Seeking God through seeking the Scriptures. This is the first principles in living a life pleasing to God. Only by knowing God can we truly know ourselves.
Pay attention. Study........Notice verse #7. Notice GOD's reply. Now notice the people's desire..... We want our own KING....
In review.... The Lord was already KING over them. Their RULER. Now.... they wanted their own kings.....
Fast forward...... in the Scriptures.... notice Jesus Christ as KING.....
Mat 21:5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ***, and a colt the foal of an ***.
This is prophecy fulfilled in The LORD.... Jesus Christ.
Isa 62:11 Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.
Isa 62:12 And they shall call them, The holy people, The redeemed of the LORD: and thou shalt be called, Sought out, A city not forsaken.
However, this is not an appeal to the earthly city of Salem (later referenced as Jerusalem). It is an appeal to the Heavenly Jerusalem. The city that Abraham sought who's builder and maker was the Lord. (Abraham already had Salem.)
Gal 4:25 For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children.
Gal 4:26 But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
Paul later references The ONLY Potentate. King of kings and Lord of lords.
1Ti 6:15 Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords;
Again. More Scripture.... Christ is referenced to yet descend from heaven and conquer the kings of the earth......
Rev 19:16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.
Read as the enemies of God fall one after another.....
Rev 19:18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.
Before Jerusalem (the city Abraham sought) actually descends from Heaven.
Rev 21:2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.
Rev 21:3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.
The LORD in Samuel 8:7 that was rejected by the people and the sons of Samuel both is none other than Jesus Christ. God manifest in flesh. THE LORD. OUR LORD!
Praise is due to our God King. Jesus Christ.
