Made in the image and likeness of God

Genesis 1:26-27
Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness, to rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, and over all the earth itself and every creature that crawls upon it.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

After the fall the bible still says man is in the image of God

Genesis 9:6
Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man his blood will be shed; for in His own image God has made mankind.

The N.T. also confirms this truth

1 Corinthians 11:7
A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man.

James 3:9
With the tongue we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness.

conclusion: Gods image in man has not changed. It remains the same. Its why man is redeemable because man is still made in God image and likeness.

hope this helps !!!

hmmm I thought there would be more interest in this topic since many believe after the fall man changed.

Something definitely changed by our fall, that is, by our choice to rebel, but it was not our being in HIS likeness. Our free will choice to rebel caused us to become enslaved to sin because of its addicting properties which overrides our free will until we are reborn by / in the Holy Spirit. As addicted to evil our ability to fulfill our free will decision to become HIS bride was seriously impaired and so we needed a saviour to redeem us and to sanctify us, returning us first to our pre-fall state and then to bring us to full holiness.

"And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:"
Genesis 5:3

In 1 Corinthians 11:7, he's a saved man, being reconciled back unto God, he's then back in His likeness, & His image b/c his identity is now found in Christ Jesus?

"And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit."
1 Corinthians 15:45

Perhaps since Adam's fall, from Seth onward, we were made in Adam's own likeness, after Adam's fallen image, spiritually separated from God until saved?

Would welcome anyone's thoughts :)

made:
S1096 gínomai – properly, to emerge, become, transitioning from one point (realm, condition) to another.

1096 (ginomai) means "to become, and signifies a change of condition, state or place" (Vine, Unger, White, NT, 109).

Not a proof but this word is easily seen as able to support the idea that our being sown into mankind, Matt 13:356-39 is not our creation but a change of state from being a spirit in the spirit world Sheol to the physical world of mankind at conception.

Interpreting the word ginomai as made supports the preconception of our being created on earth but it has no more strength than does the interpretation as changed to become which fits the preconception of our pre-earth existence.

Greetings, TedT! Thank you for sharing :)

Upon discovering Genesis 5:3, it's caused me to heed telling others we're all made in God's likeness, & God's image, b/c a lost person might presume they're acceptable just as they are, dead in their sin nature, no need for a Saviour. It does make sense, though... we can know what God looks like manifest in the flesh b/c Jesus has shown us all (John 14:9).

I read on another forum a calvinist refer to all mankind as " TRASH " and that God is just in doing whatever He pleases and His character and goodness cannot come into question ?

anyone else buying into that idea ?

Strangely, we are BOTH ...

[Gen 2:7 NASB] Then the LORD God formed the man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living person.
[Gen 3:19 NASB] By the sweat of your face You shall eat bread, Until you return to the ground, Because from it you were taken; For you are dust, And to dust you shall return."
[Gen 18:27 NASB] And Abraham replied, "Now behold, I have ventured to speak to the Lord, although I am [only] dust and ashes.
[Isa 64:6 NASB] For all of us have become like one who is unclean, And all our righteous deeds are like a filthy garment; And all of us wither like a leaf, And our wrongdoings, like the wind, take us away.
  • "filthy garment" is the "rated-G" version of a much harsher appraisal of us.

[Psa 139:14 NASB] I will give thanks to You, because I am awesomely and wonderfully [made;] Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well.
[Heb 2:11-13 NASB] For both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one [Father;] for this reason He is not ashamed to call them brothers [and sisters,] saying, "I WILL PROCLAIM YOUR NAME TO MY BROTHERS, IN THE MIDST OF THE ASSEMBLY I WILL SING YOUR PRAISE." And again, "I WILL PUT MY TRUST IN HIM." And again, "BEHOLD, I AND THE CHILDREN WHOM GOD HAS GIVEN ME."

Thus, by our physical nature we are nothing ("trash" may go too far, but 'filthy garment' suggests perhaps not) ... yet, because GOD made and values us, we HAVE value.

No. Given what Jesus said were the two greatest commandments in the Law, of we are to love our neighbor and he showed us our neighbor is not just the one next door, then that is no more that God, Himself, does. God loves everyone. He does not consider anyone to be "trash".

  • "filthy garment" is the "rated-G" version of a much harsher appraisal of us.
Our deeds not us. You do not reject your children and consider them to be trash when they do wrong. God does not reject man when he does wrong. He certainly does not consider them to be trash.

that has to do with our righteousness before God not mans value. God so loved the world ( who hated, despised Him ) that He gave His only Son. The fact God redeems us shows He values the image of God in man.

I suggest that you are conflating the image of God with the unregenerates self righteousness.

agreed :)

Like THEM, you brook no conversation ... your way or the highway (I leave you to your "yes-man" echo chamber) but do not again complain ...
I thought there would be more interest in this topic

I'm trying to have one and point out the distinction between fithy rags righteousness and Gods image in man.
You asked for conversation on "trash" and y'all reject the "spot on" verse that supports that position as "irrelevant" to the topic. It is a hard verse to discuss in an open forum with mixed company, so I was at a disadvantage even attempting to point y'all towards it. If you really want a conversation ...

[Isa 64:6 NASB] For all of us have become like one who is unclean,
  • Not about DEEDS ... WE HAVE BECOME! We ARE (to be verb: state of being) like one who is "unclean". [Filthy, rejected, unfit for its purpose].
And all our righteous deeds
  • First it spoke of what we ARE, now it speaks of what we DO ...
  • What we DO flows from what we ARE!
  • [John 8:44 NASB] "You are of [your] father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him. Whenever he tells a lie, he speaks from his own [nature,] because he is a liar and the father of lies."
  • [Luke 6:43 NASB] "For there is no good tree that bears bad fruit, nor, on the other hand, a bad tree that bears good fruit."
are like a filthy garment;

  • "a filthy garment" = (וּכְבֶגֶד עִדִּים) = [H5708] feminine menstruation; [H899] rag
    Let's use the modern "Tampon"

Taking a break at the semi-colon ...
We are UNCLEAN and our deeds are like a "used tampon".
Let us take a moment to compare this to the "accusation" that "people are trash".
  • What you do (fruit) flows from what you are (good tree/bad tree).
  • When you purchase a new (unused) tampon, it is not trash.
  • When 'someone' employs a tampon, it is not trash.
  • What do we do with a used tampon? Is it reasonable to call it trash?
  • If the FRUIT is TRASH (a kind word), then is the BAD TREE not also TRASH?

Continuing after the semi-colon ...
And all of us wither like a leaf,
  • Is a withered leaf "trash"?
  • "ALL OF US" are in that state.
And our wrongdoings, like the wind, take us away.
  • Our actions (deeds) do not make us a withered leaf, we were already a withered leaf.
  • Our actions were like the wind ... merely the excuse that blew our dead "TRASH" selves away.

NOTE: I did not write 64:6 ... Isaiah did!
Complain to Isaiah or God if you have a problem with what the test says.
I just happen to think "used tampons" and "withered leaves" qualify as "trash" (which is what you requested).

You are making my point with the distinction from Isaiah 64:6 and the image of God which are 2 entirely different concepts .

All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.
