Lovers of Self

When we disallow God His rightful place as supreme Lord of our lives, self moves in to replace Him. Self becomes our first love, and God no longer holds the supreme place in our lives.

Jesus teaches his disciples not to worry about their length of life, their food or clothes. If we worry all the time, we’re insulting God—and no different from unbelievers.

The world of nature constantly speaks to us of God’s amazing provision—even for birds and flowers. If we put God first, then everything else will find its proper place. We can start to enjoy heaven—now.

The person who puts God first will find God with him right up to the last. “In everything you do, put God first, and he will direct you and crown your efforts with success”. Prov. 3:6

Humility is taking up the proper amount of space, where we are neither lovers of ourselves nor have no love for ourselves, but have the proper amount of love for ourselves. Part of the command to love our neighbors as ourselves is the command to love ourselves, where we do not love our neighbors more or less than ourselves, but at the same level that we love ourselves. We we should love ourselves in the same way that God loves us and that is how we should love our neighbor, which is why Jesus commanded to love our neighbor as he loves us.

In Proverbs 3:5-7, we have a choice between leaning on our own understanding of right and wrong by doing what is right in our own eyes or trusting in God with all of our heart to correctly divide between right and wrong through obeying the Mosaic Law, and He will make our way straight.

We should spend more time building people's faith in what God is already doing in them, then telling them to do all the things they should be doing.

The Bible warns against those who are “lovers of self,” identifying them as money-loving, boastful, proud, abusive, and unholy 2 Timothy 3:2

The self-love spoken of here is obviously wrong. But when Jesus tells us to love our neighbors as ourselves he isn’t arguing that we shouldn’t love ourselves, only that we should extend our instincts for self-care to caring for others.
