Yoga literally means “union” and is closely related to Hindu religion. It involves a variety of ways by which people achieve union of body, mind, and spirit, and also union with the ultimate reality or divine spirit. Although generally viewed in the West as a set of exercises that improve flexibility, strength, and relaxation, it is a deeply religious practice in the East.
Yoga basically involves breathing and posture exercises. Breathing is important not only for relaxation but also for its connection with prana, or life energy (see question 36). Improved flow of prana is at least as important in Yoga as any physical benefits. The bad news is as students advance in Yoga, moral and character changes are expected with the ultimate goal being the realization of their divine nature.
The question becomes, is it possible for a Christian to isolate the physical aspects of yoga as simply a method of exercise, without incorporating the spirituality or philosophy behind it? Yoga originated with a blatantly anti-Christian philosophy, and that philosophy has not changed. It teaches one to focus on oneself instead of on the one true God. It encourages its participants to seek the answers to life’s difficult questions within their own consciousness instead of in the Word of God. It also leaves one open to deception from God’s enemy, who searches for victims whom he can turn away from God.
Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
1 Peter 5:8
Yoga clams to offer a subjective intuitive experience of so-called “reality.” But instead of using chemicals like LSD, man could alter his consciousness through Yoga and Hindu forms of meditation, such as the Transcendental Meditation of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.
The danger of yoga is heightened in the Kundalini version, where some of those who partake have even experienced paranormal events following the yoga practice. The practice of yoga is based on the belief that man and God are one. It is little more than self-worship disguised as high-level spirituality.
Deuteronomy 18:9
When you arrive in the land the LORD your God is giving you, be very careful not to imitate the detestable customs of the nations living there.
Stay away from yoga just to be safe.
