Was Peter already a believer? Of course he was. Then why would Jesus need to wash him?
Jesus explains: "He who has bathed (i.e. has been saved) needs only to wash his feet. (i.e. to be cleansed from current sins), but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you." For He knew the one who was betraying Him; for this reason He said, "Not all of you are clean."
So we know from these words of Jesus that He is speaking of a spiritual "cleanness" (like 11 of the apostles) vs. a spiritual "uncleanness"(like Judas).
So one who is spiritually clean, or saved, STILL needs to "wash his feet" (to be cleansed of current sins) DAILY.
Remember in the Lord's prayer Jesus said "Give us this day our daily bread." Matthew 6:11
So we know that we are to pray daily, and the very next verse, verse 12 says "And forgive us our debts (sins), as we also have forgiven our debtors."
So we see that, even though we are saved, we are to ask God to forgive us of our current sins each and every day.

Which of the two types of sin are you talking about? Or do you even know there are two? Most Protestants are clueless that there are two. The Reformists did not bring with them what God had already shown the Church - mortal and venial sins - as they were suppose to. And there new doctrines Jesus condemns. Revelation 3: ‘These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: “I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. 2 Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God. 3 Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, and you will not know what hour I will come upon you.
1. Sins unto death. When we first confess that we have desires to commit this first type of sin, such as the last 6 of the commandments of God against each other, Jesus takes away all unrighteousness from our nature, making us a new creature IN HIM. 1 John 3:4-9. With no desire to commit a sin unto death we CANNOT commit this type of sin, and are given new desires from God.
2. Sins not unto death. After we are clean John 15:3, and walk by the Spirit, Jesus then can work on maturing our immature fruit of the Spirit. As John says in 1 John 1:7 if we walk in the Spirit, Jesus cleanses these impulses and matures each fruit of the Spirit as Peter shows us in 2 Peter 1:5-7.

Show me where the Bible mentions "mortal vs. venial sins". It's not there. The Bible doesn't make that differentiation, so why do you?
John does mention a "sin unto death" and a "sin not unto death", but neither you nor anyone else knows exactly what that means.
Your interpretation of that is simply speculation - which, by the way, I totally disagree with. I admit my understanding is also speculation, but, to me, it makes much more sense than yours. Also, I did not come up with this myself - I heard a trusted teacher give this as a possible interpretation:
Sin unto death - a particular sin that someone simply will not let go of, even to their dying day. When they die, it's too late to pray for them.
Sin not unto death - a particular sin that someone not only repents of, but never returns to, even to their dying day. We must pray for those in this category, that they will never go back to the "pigpen".
By "a particular sin", I mean it could be ANY sin that has a strong hold on a person, such as heavy drinking, drugs, fornication, porn, homosexuality, trans, prostitution, stealing, gambling, etc.

Dwight, it is God that makes the differentiation. One can be covered with a sacrifice; the other requires a death sentence. Read Numbers 15:22-36.
Mortal wound is one on a dead person.
Venial means pardonable.
Now look at 1 John 5:16-17. Sins unto death, and sins NOT unto death.
Do you understand, or do you think as Martin Luther did that all sin is pardonable when he wrote, "even if you commit murder and adultery 1,000 times a day, it will not separate you from God." The very first sins that Jesus takes away from our nature are mortal sins unto death called lawlessness, because they are against the Ten Commandments of God. Mortal sins unto death are what "the wages of sin is death" are about. What is left is a human nature Adam was created with, not a sin nature, that can grow mature as Jesus finishes our perfection. 2 Peter 1:5-11. Peter says that when this second type of sin is matured (fruit of the Spirit) then we will never stumble; another doctrine that you have probably swallowed, that we will "always" sin until we die and leave these bodies. The body is not what commits sin; it is the mind and heart that pulls the strings on the puppet we call our flesh, right where according to the New Covenant the laws of God are written. Once born again of the Spirit, all we need do is obey our conscience. If you know something to be wrong according to your conscience, then just don't do it. Simple. If I do something against my conscience I can't sleep, and I hate losing sleep, so instead I take the peaceful road and obey.
Leave all that reformist inadequacy junk behind and study what the Author and Finisher of our faith (from faith to faith, and from glory to glory) actually does in us to make us His brethren (twins) IF you abide in Him. Then you will know the true meaning of 1 John 3:9 about the mortal sins of lawlessness and realize you are free from lawless sin and are righteous. Those are the sins that really matter. Look at 1 John 1:7 and see that even though we are not perfect in fruit we are clean and walk in the Spirit. John 15:3.
You said, because you swallowed the kool aid, that only Jesus could be perfect. But the Bible says we are predestined to be conformed into His image. How? The seed of the Father. Jesus was conceived with it in the womb, but we are recreated with the seed of the Father when we are born again. 1 John 3:9 says, "Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God." As I said, this is freedom from lawlessness, not immature fruit of the Spirit. I don't know about you, but I can live just fine without committing murder! The word, "practice" doesn't apply to this type of sin, and was stupid to add words to God's perfect inspired Word.

We have the capacity for godliness because the Spirit of God lives within us. We still have the capacity for sin as well, but now we have the ability to resist sin and, more importantly, the desire to resist and to live godly.

The Greek word "poieo", which means "to make" or "do" was NOT ADDED to God's perfect inspired Word - it is PART OF God's perfect inspired Word. So when we translate 1 John 3:9, it says: "No one who is born of God "poieo" sin, ..." or in English, "No one who is born of God "makes or does" sin. To make or to do implies ongoing activity.
Therefore the translators have done VERY WELL to use the word "practices" here. They were not stupid. What is extremely unwise is to reject this word that is in the original Greek.
It is also unwise to reject the words of Paul: "But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet." Women who reject this verse, which is also part of God's perfect inspired Word, cannot be trusted to convey the truth of His Word. They pretend to help and teach people God's Word, while at the same time, they are living in rebellion to God's word.

Right. Poieo means commit. Practice does not mean once as commit does. Besides, praeo means practice. Practice is "many times." For instance, I cannot even once deliberately hurt a child. I cannot commit murder. I cannot bear false witness or lie. I cannot steal. I cannot commit adultery. Practice does not fit at all. It would be ridiculous to say 'I don't practice murder all the time, except every once in a while I might slip up. That's why my backyard is a cemetery.'

We DO NOT PRACTICE SIN! NOT PRACTICE means "very few times". Yes it means we (BELIEVERS) will sin every once in a while. And for you to even suggest that our "occasional" sins could be murder, or rape, or incest or ANY sin deserving the death penalty is sheer insanity! If those are our "occasional" sins, then WE ARE NOT EVEN SAVED to begin with.
You know as well as I do that anyone guilty of crimes that deserve the death penalty DO NOT SIN ONLY EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE. For such wicked persons, SIN IS A CONTINUAL WAY OF LIFE. They PRACTICE SIN! CHRISTIANS DO NOT PRACTICE SIN!
Once again, we see vividly displayed what comes out of a woman's heart, who thinks that she can both teach and exercise authority over a man. That is to say, she thinks she can reject and even defy the commands of Paul, without any consequences.

The goal is becoming either righteous or holy BEFORE DEATH, because the condition we die in is the condition we will remain, Revelation 22:11. There is a false doctrine that this cannot happen until after death of our body, but the demons love it so they can own us forever.
Dwight, 1 John 3 is about the sins unto death, vs. 4, lawlessness. The first thing Jesus does when we have acknowledged that we cannot be righteous on our own because as soon as we try we end up failing. That is why it is Jesus that Authors our faith, not us, and the first type of sin He takes out of our nature, the old man, are the sins unto death so we may have eternal life. This is literal. I know, because when it happened to me I felt the heaviness of sin leave my body. This is the first faith of the two faiths in Romans 1:16-17. The removal of sins unto death from our nature is what makes us righteous like Him. Romans 8:29 and 1 John 1:7 because of verse 8 and producing verse 9. It is the first step in being conformed into His image. I'm glad you see how silly it is to put the lawless sins of murder, adultery, stealing and bearing false witness in the category of not committing even ONCE. Practice does not belong in 1 John 3.
Now for the work of Jesus as the Finisher of the second faith. This happens after we are clean of lawlessness. John 15:3. The correct word for the complete removal of the desire to commit even once the sins unto death of murder, etc. is righteousness. means sinlessness. Not perfect. I have only heard the words sinless and perfection together stated on this forum and by John MacArthur. I remember he had his whole congregation in fits of laughter as he mocked sinless perfection. We've discussed sinlessness, next comes the long process of being perfect to where we never stumble in 2 Peter 1:5-11. This process is not sanctification that is actually in junction with justification at the beginning of our walk with Christ. All it means is we are set apart. Whoever named the process we go through, sanctification did not get it from the Bible. That is why I prayed one day that I noticed sanctification as a process is not in the Bible, but I knew there was a process, so I asked Him what He calls the process. And immediately, I heard the word "glorification." I had never heard anyone preach that before, but now I see it confirmed in Scripture everywhere. So the correct title of the process over years and years is "glorification," Romans 8:30. Memorize those verses. This passage is about the immature fruit of the Spirit. As we abide in Him, it is He, not us, that does the maturing of this list of perfections. Perfection is holiness the second faith of Romans 1:16-17. After many years according to Paul mentioning he was not yet perfect, I am glad that in his last letter before death he finally made it, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing. So you see it is possible to reach holiness BEFORE we die and live the rest of our life without stumbling in fruit. Even though this is the second faith, it is also related to from glory to glory, called glorification.
So there you have what I like to call God's double duty.
Author and Finisher of our faith.
Righteous and holy.
From faith to faith
From glory to glory
Sins unto death (lawlessness); and sins NOT unto death (immature fruit)
All that is required from us is to abide in Him and trust Him to do the work in us He promised.

One day when I lived in Arizona I left on a trip back to California for a yearly seminar on Spirit-filled Living. I decided to take the scenic route through the back roads across country and while I was driving God clearly spoke to me and said, I am giving you the Office of Teacher, and put in my heart the desire for my old pastor in California to be the one to anoint me for the office. The next day Pastor Jack Hayford and his son-in-law Scott Bauer who became senior pastor after Pastor Jack took charge of head of his college agreed and anointed me officially for that office.
Jesus took full charge of reteaching me the correct interpretations that had for centuries been misinterpreted. That is what I teach. I teach on these forums and if men don't want to learn from God's pupil they don't have to. But it wasn't Eve that sinned a sin unto death, that was all Adam. In the first century the women were basically ignorant of the Torah and even how to read and write. It would be quite unseemly for women who were separated from their husbands in the synagogue to yell accross to their husband and ask him questions. They should wait and ask questions at home.
I have received petty comments from jealous men on these forums and it was quite hurtful, not that you would care. But I did go before God and asked Him why He gave me this office if I wasn't suppose to teach on an open forum for men and women. God spoke to me as He always does and immediately said, "I never spoke that to Paul." This was a letter to Timothy, and as much as you don't like to admit this, it was only Paul's opinion regarding the centuries old custom of the Jews, not an inspired command from God, similar to his comments not from the Lord in 1 Corintians 7.
I don't blame you for being jealous. I just had a better Teacher than most folks. I have a prophecy in my Bible that was given to me one year at the same conference I go to in California. It said to make myself available to be among those "trail-blazers" the Lord was raising up. The prophecy was many lines long and came to pass in order over a period of over 20 years. When my eyes were opened by the Spirit of God to see the anointing, if any, on the pastor when giving his sermon, and they ranged from white to bright royal blue, I happened to read the old prophecy and close to the end it said, and may her eyes be opened by the Spirit of God. My ears have been opened ever since 2/9/77 when I was baptized in the Holy Spirit and my nature has been born again, and He spoke to me for the first time. Since then we speak often. I ask questions on doctrine, and He answers me. Now just in the last couple years have my eyes also been opened to see what no one else in the room of most churches are able to see. It is invisible to them. But at my regular church there are four of us to see the same thing when our Pastor Jim starts his sermon. He has the biggest heart and his anointing is bright white. Once it got so big part of it broke away and stood beside him like a pillar. I'm still learning about the gift and what it means, and finally know that it has to do with not only the pastor but the sermon.

My little joke about not practicing murder and the cemetery was a joke. I was making a point about the actual type of sin that chapter 3 of 1 John was talking about. LAWLESSNESS! And like it or not those are commandments such as murder, lying, stealing, adultery, and coveting. Dwight, you do not "practice" not doing them, meaning you could. No! You cannot COMMIT them even once. Why? Because Paul made it clear that if you do one, believing grace with "cover" it, the wages of that sin is still death!!

Now you're even claiming that all of your translations are correct and all others are incorrect and have been for centuries. What absolute arrogance. No wonder you teach heresy. You teach there are 2 kinds of faith, which the Bible NEVER teaches. Romans 1:17 does NOT say that. You claim to know the difference between "sin unto death" and "sin not unto death", when many Bible scholars can't even agree on that. You claim that 1 Timothy 2:11-15 is NOT the Word of God, but just Paul's opinion, even though he confirms that his command is God's word, by looking back at Adam and Eve. Eve was the one deceived, just as you are today, not Adam. They both sinned and they both died spiritually that day.
Why would I be jealous of a woman who is danger of being eternally lost, because she is deceived into thinking that SHE ALONE has the ONLY TRUE interpretations of Scripture, which other Christians have not known for centuries? Not satisfied with false teachings yourself, you feel "God" has told you to spread your cancer to others in the body of Christ. You are living in a fantasy world. It's no wonder you're deceived - you hear a voice which you think is God, but that voice is the accuser and the father of lies.

As you know the Old Testament was a schoolmaster, and God already taught that there were two types of sin back then. Ones that could be covered and forgiven through sacrifice, but the other held a death sentence. It is God that taught me that Numbers 15:22-36 defined what the NT called sins unto death, and sins not unto death. You may think I am arrogant for believing God, but isn't it more likely that you believing man over God was even more arrogant? Especially since you are a man, and I am but a woman. It may be you have never heard God's voice, nor received prophecy of the meaning of God's word. I do everyday.
Romans 1:16-17 says 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.” Why can't you see what is written? These are two different levels of faith. The first removes sins unto death and makes us righteous. The second is the finishing faith that are the small imperfections that dull the finish making us holy. Can't you see a difference in righteousness and holiness? Holiness is on a higher plain than righteousness. It is not that difficult to understand.
I asked God why He gave me the office of teacher when Paul forbid women teaching men, and He is the one who spoke to me and said, "I never told Paul that." It had more to do with Jewish custom than intelligence. He also informed me that Eve's sin was not a sin unto death, but Adam's was, and he was the one whose sin condemned the world. Paul was flat-out wrong in his assessment. But I don't expect an arrogant man to accept God's words to me. You WANT Paul to be right, and God wrong. Otherwise, you would need to confess your sin against me. You have no reason to believe me, but also no reason to believe I'm wrong and only think I am able to hear God's voice, because you can't.

I'm not the only one that God has taught the SAME interpretation to. They also have been taught by God, Himself, the correct interpretations of His word.
Why is it that you don't read the Bible and find out for yourself the errors you have been taught by man that, yes, are centuries old.

Funny. You need to tell yourself this advise, because what you've been taught actually contradicts God's Word, and you'd know that if you had the Spirit and were not just a natural man, 1 Corinthians 2:14. Read the context, verses 9-16. I never had an answer to prayer when I belonged in the cult I was raised in, but after almost 30 years I received the infilling of the Holy Spirit and now 100% of my prayers are answered. I belong to Christ. You belong to a man-made denomination that teaches the opposite of the fact that Jesus takes away our sin and is the Author and Finisher of our faith.
Do you believe Jesus freed us from sin, or from the punishment of sin? If just the punishment, then that's why you would also believe we will always have a sin nature until we leave these bodies. That would be funny if it didn't slap Jesus in the face! Dwight, please listen to me. We all need to be born again, not just study the doctrines of man that are based on scriptures taken out of context, like Romans 7:14-25 and 1 John 1:8 of us before repentance and acceptance of Jesus, instead of what is actually a Christian - Romans 7:5-6, and Romans 8:1-9 and Romans 6:5-7 and 1 John 1:7, and chapter 3
