How can we discern truth in a world of deception

Jim began by referring to 2 Timothy 3 where Paul warns that in the last days perilous times shall come and he outlines a number of characteristics of those days. Then in verse 5 he notes, “Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.” You’ll also see that he warns that this kind of deception will get worse and worse.

One of the greatest spiritual deceptions of our day is shown by the people who claim to be Christian yet the doctrine and teachings they espouse are very far removed from the Bible.

For example, in 2 Corinthians 11:13-14 Paul said, “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.” In other words, many people can be deceived and not even know it.

So how can we discern truth in a world of deception? Returning to Crosstalk to answer that question was Mike Gendron. Mike is founder and director of Proclaiming the Gospel Ministry. Mike was a devout Roman Catholic for over 3 decades and was taught to rely upon the authority of the church above all else. Mike searched the Scriptures and was amazed to find that what he read in Scripture contradicted the teaching and tradition of the church he had been a part of for so long. He trusted Jesus as his Savior and now the Bible has become his sole authority in all matters of faith. Mike is the author of the books, Preparing for Eternity and Contending for the Gospel and has produced numerous videos with warnings concerning false teachings vs. the truth of the Scriptures.

Mike noted how culture is redefining truth. No longer is truth objective but it’s subjective with people saying that your truth is just as valid as mine. God has given us a way to be protected from such deception. It’s through the infallible and inspired, authoritative Word of God. It’s the only infallible source for truth on earth. That means everyone and everything must be tested by the supreme authority of God’s Word.

How does Mike define discernment? It’s being able to tell what is true and what is false. Why do we need this? It’s because this is the way we can tell good from evil and it exposes those who call evil good, and good, evil. In fact, it was John (in 1 John 4) who exhorted Christians to judge concerning doctrinal and spiritual issues, telling readers not to believe every spirit, but to test the spirits to see if they’re from God because many false prophets have gone into the world. So discernment distinguishes truth from error in order to prevent false teaching from coming into the church.

According to Mike there are many areas within Roman Catholicism that deceive people. For example, all the graces needed to attain eternal life must be merited in the Catholic church. That brings up some questions. For example, how do you merit the unmerited favor of God? Also, if Jesus paid it all at Calvary, why is He offered daily as a sacrificial victim on Catholic altars?

So in the end, as someone who has great love and compassion for Catholics, Mike is simply saying, don’t believe him. Go to the Bible and see if what he’s saying is true. Are you trusting in Jesus as your all-sufficient Savior and His righteousness or are you trusting in sacraments, purgatory, your religious rituals or your own works? After all, you must make a choice. Christ alone is your only hope of salvation!

The Torah is truth (Psalms 119:142) and Jesus is the embodiment of the truth because he set a sinless example of how to walk in obedience to truth.

Don't believe anything you hear and only half of what you see. But seriously you have to have a good Boogie-Woogie detector. Then when someone tries to lay some Boogie-Woogie You will know it. There's a Ministry that I really like and I read their daily devotion called "Life in the Word". If you spend a lot of time in the word you develop the ability to spot the LIE.

I've noticed that most of the Cults that have started here in America, the leaders convince their followers that it's okay for him to have sexual relationships with all the women whether they're married or not and with the children. Now you would think it wouldn't take much of a Boogie-Woogie Detector to figure out that's not right and yet 90 people at Waco including women and children Forfeited for their lives In a fiery Inferno following just such a leader.

The Bible warns us about having itchy years. Cult leaders pray on gullible people and tell them what they want to hear. Don't fall for the lie.

1. Be persistent and spiritually hungry, Scripture says God rewards those who diligently seek him.

2. Be willing to change and admit your faults, the Lord dwells with the lowly.

3. Always follow the light you have to the best of your ability: faithful in little, will be given much.

4. Try to stay apart from the sinful world system, and spend time in prayer and Bible study.

5. Cultivate a submissive attitude towards authorities in life, rebellion is an opening.

One word/two then, "Holy Spirit". get the truth, evidence in the scripture. Proverbs 14:12 "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." ...... so, Proverbs 12:28 "In the way of righteousness is life; and in the pathway thereof there is no death."

1 Corinthians 2:7 "But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory:" 1 Corinthians 2:8 "Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory." 1 Corinthians 2:9 "But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him." 1 Corinthians 2:10 "But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God." 1 Corinthians 2:11 "For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God." 1 Corinthians 2:12 "Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God." 1 Corinthians 2:13 "Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual." 1 Corinthians 2:14 "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." 1 Corinthians 2:15 "But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man." 1 Corinthians 2:16 "For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ."

That isnt that difficult-- Clear ones thinking of the dogmas they have been taught and learn all Jesus teaches--then one can see truth. They will be shocked to see 99% of all religion claiming to be christian do not belong to Jesus but are these-2Cor 11:12-15--RUN FROM THEM quickly.

Develop your discernment. Jesus said you'll know the truth and the truth will set you free. We are in the world but we're not of the world. If you hang around with real God loving Christians the facts are easy to spot. They usually want something.

To all, again, the bible never contradicts itself. 1 Corinthians 2:12 "Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God." 1 Corinthians 2:13 "Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual." 1 Corinthians 2:14 "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." 1 Corinthians 2:15 "But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man." 1 Corinthians 2:16 "For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? Few know what Jesus actually taught. They learn little of what he actually taught in buildings called-church.

John 14:6
Jesus is : THE Truth.
And how do the born again discern " false teachers". and that can be a Pope, a Pastor, a TV Evangelist.
Find out if they believe that "salvation can be lost"... as if they believe that then they dont understand Salvation.
And Reader, if they dont understand the Blood of Jesus as "the one time ETERNAL Sacrifice for Sin", and Jesus Himself, IS our Eternal life, and we are "made righteous".... then they understand nothing else in the NT, ALSO.
God does not give revelation of His word to anyone who is trying to work to stay saved, or work to go to heaven.
He does not show the word of LIGHT to people who believe that water washes away your sin.
So, what im showing you is.... if the "teacher" is in the dark, regarding not understanding the finished work of Jesus on the Cross = as the ONLY Salvation God offers or accepts on our BEHALF, then this "teacher" is the one Jesus refers to in Luke 11:35,
They are a "dark light".

I attended a church for a while where the preacher always started his sermon by saying “If you have your Bible with you this morning, turn with me to …”

I always have my Bible with me.

One morning it was so quiet in the church that I accidentally caused a ruckus. The preacher did his “If you have your Bible with you this morning, turn with me to …” and I began turning to the passage of scripture he was going to preach on. My wife told me later that everyone in church was staring at me, including the pastor. I asked her why and she said I was the only one turning pages, and it was loud.

After church a man, who was obviously irritated, approached me in the parking lot and said “What’s the matter? Don’t you trust the man?” I didn’t answer and he turned and walked away.

Had I answered him I would have said “No, I don’t trust the man. He asked us to turn with him to a passage of scripture. I did. You didn’t. Why didn’t you?”

The point is that people, in general, aren’t reading their Bibles. They’re trusting the man in the pulpit.

That is funny since everyone at my church turns to the pages of their bible or looks at the bible passage on the big screen.

Every church I have been in you can hear the pages of the bible being turned and the same in our small groups/home groups./ mens discipleship groups.

In Psalms 119:142, the Mosaic Law is truth. God is trustworthy, therefore what He has instructed is also trustworthy (Psalms 19:7), so the way to trust God is by obediently trusting in what He has instructed, it is contradictory to trust in God for our salvation, but not in what He has instructed, and it contradictory to contrast trusting in God's word with trusting in God's word made flesh, but rather obediently trusting in God's word alone is the way to true in Christ alone for our salvation.
