Doctrines of Demons

If the lake of fire is eternal consciousness and one temperature - like lava - what will it be like for those who receive "fewer stripes."
I know for believers there is gain and loss of rewards. are there degrees to torment ? I'm not sure one way or the other. But the scripture does imply there will be some whos punishment is more severe than others.

“Truly, I say to you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town” (Matt. 10:15).

“But I tell you, it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you … But I tell you that it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom than for you” (Matt. 11:22, 24).

“I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matt. 12:36–37).

“And that servant who knew his master’s will but did not get ready or act according to his will, will receive a severe beating. But the one who did not know, and did what deserved a beating, will receive a light beating. Everyone to whom much was given, of him much will be required, and from him to whom they entrusted much, they will demand the more” (Luke 12:47–48).

“But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed” (Rom. 2:5).

“How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace?” (Heb. 10:29)

Yes, I know them all, just not how long they will be in the lake of fire?

'Now I beseech you, brethren,
mark them which cause divisions and offences
contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned;
and avoid them.
For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ,
but their own belly;
and by good words and fair speeches
deceive the hearts of the simple.'

(Rom 16:17)

'That we henceforth be no more children,
tossed to and fro,
and carried about with every wind of doctrine,
by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness,
whereby they lie in wait to deceive;
But speaking the truth in love,
may grow up into Him in all things,
which is the head, even Christ:'

(Eph 4:14-15)

'For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine;
but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;
And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.'

(2Ti 4:3-4)

Demons...
Are they real?
You bet.
Who are they?

Most believe they’re evil angels, set on tormenting humans any way they can.
There is some controversy, but many believe the evidence indicates they started out in heaven, just like all the other angels. But they were thrown out when they sided with Satan in his attempt to overthrow God. Over the centuries they haven’t done much to improve themselves. In fact, they seem to have grown even more corrupt and evil. If there was ever a spark of goodness in them, it’s long burned itself out.

Demons belong in hell. That’s where they’re going to spend eternity, and their one pleasure in life seems to be to take as many human souls with them as possible. Demons hate God. They hate me. And they hate you. They enjoy seeing us suffer and will do everything they possibly can to hurt us.
Why?

The best way to hurt God is to hurt his kids.

Sometimes demons decide the best way to inflict pain is to come disguised as angels—speaking of love, peace, and brotherhood—trying anything to entice us away from God. Later, when they know they have the upper hand in someone’s life, they come in with fangs bared, snarling and growling like the monsters they are. Other times they’re subtle, content to work through drug abuse, alcohol addiction, pornography, and other vices, never giving a hint that anything supernatural is going on until it’s too late.

There are lot to watch out for a Christian. Here is a short list.

There are lots of other occult beliefs out there. But, the same pattern emerges over and over again…particularly:
1. We don’t need Jesus to take the punishment for our mistakes.
2. We can become God-like on our own.
3. Jesus Christ was a good teacher, but definitely not God the Son.
Most of these come under the heading of New Age. The ones we’ll take a quick look at are:
• Channeling
• Astrology
• Astral projection
• Yoga
• Meditation
• Crystal power
• Extrasensory perception
• Universalism

We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him. 1 John 5:18

  • but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.

Everything we as born again Christian’s do is to be led by the Spirit.

Keeping ourselves is no different. Sin is the door of access by which the Devil gains access to our lives to influence us in evil ways.

For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. Romans 8:13

  • but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

The Spirit leads us and guides to protect ourself from the enemy, to live sober and righteous in this wicked culture.

Many however are ignorant of these things, spending their time integrating their mind with the things of this world, they are easily taken captive by the Devil to do his will.

The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness. Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness. Luke 11:34-35

  • Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness.

Using our eyes and ears to intergrate ourselves with the things of the world will weaken us and cause the light in us to grow dim and eventually dark, therefore dulling our sensitivity to the leading of the Spirit.

Adulterers and adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God. James 4:4

  • Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

The Spirit longs for us jealously, and desires for us to draw near to our Refuge and Fortress, and learn to dwell under the shadow of His wings… dwelling in His Presence.

Making our homes a sanctuary of His peace and glory.

The Spirit desires to rest upon our homes and families as a cloud by day and a fire by night, protecting us and our children.

Are we cooperating with the Spirit?

I believe its eternal, never ending as taught by Jesus where the worm never dies and the fire is never quenched.
But just because a fire never goes out doesn't mean a piece of paper will keep burning for as long as the fire burns.

Remember, hell was not made for man, but for Satan and his angels which tells me they are immortal beings. Humans were created immortal also until Adam sinned, when we became mortal. His sin caused death. This is another reason it is necessary for us to be born again - immortality.

Except in the afterlife neither the saved or unsaved cease to exist. Their bodies / souls will suffer eternal torment

Really? Immortality is one reason to be born again, but when Adam sinned the spirit and soul also died within us. Another reason for Adam to question God's truth when Eve had already eaten a piece of fruit and was still able to stand before him. Her clean spirit and soul had died.

The bible is very clear that there is eternal tormentfor the wicked. They will have a conscious existence in the afterlife.

Mark 9:42-48
42 "And if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a large millstone tied around his neck. 43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out. 45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life crippled than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. 47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell, 48 where

"'their worm does not die,
and the fire is not quenched
.'

Matthew 8:11-13
11 "I say to you that many will come from east and west, and recline at the table with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven; 12 but the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

Matthew 13:41-43
41 "The Son of Man will send forth His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all stumbling blocks, and those who commit lawlessness, 42 and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 "Then THE RIGHTEOUS WILL SHINE FORTH AS THE SUN in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.

Matthew 13:49-50
49 "So it will be at the end of the age; the angels will come forth and take out the wicked from among the righteous, 50 and will throw them into the furnace of fire; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 22:13-14
"Then the king said to the servants, 'Bind him hand and foot, and throw him into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.' 14 "For many are called, but few are chosen."

Matthew 24:48-51
48 "But if that evil slave says in his heart, 'My master is not coming for a long time,' 49 and begins to beat his fellow slaves and eat and drink with drunkards; 50 the master of that slave will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour which he does not know, 51 and will cut him in pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Matthew 25:29-30
29 "For to everyone who has, more shall be given, and he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he does have shall be taken away. 30 "Throw out the worthless slave into the outer darkness; in that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

2 Peter 2:1-9
But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them — bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2 Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. 3 In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping.

4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment; 5 if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others; 6 if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; 7 and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men 8 (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)— 9 if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment.

Jude 4-7, 12-13

4 For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.

5 Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe. 6 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their own home — these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. 7 In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of thosewho suffer the punishment of eternal fire.

12 These men are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm — shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted — twice dead. 13 They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reservedforever.

Revelation 21:8

8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars — their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."

Revelation 19:20-21
20 But the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who had performed the miraculous signs on his behalf. With these signs he had deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped his image. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur.

Revelation 20:10
10 And the devil, who deceived them, was thrown into the lake of burning sulfur, where the beast and the false prophet had been thrown. They will be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Revelation 20:12-15
12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what he had done. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into The lake of fireis the second death. 15 If anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.

Scripture uses these terms and phrases as synonyms:

Unquenchable fire
Fiery hell
Black darkness
Outer darkness
Furnace of fire
Fire and brimstone
The smoke of their torment
The lake of fire which burns with brimstone
Where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched
The eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels

All of the above carry the same meaning and consequences for the wicked.

hope this helps !!!

Still it does not say THEY will not die.

A long time ago I began to notice that in all the parables, the chaff is burned up. It is destroyed. That is a picture of hell. And no where does it say that an unbelievers dead spirit and soul become immortal in hell as you said before. Don't forget, the Tree of Life is in heaven not hell.

Outer darkness is different than the lake of fire. When do you think that is. Of course, after death, but remember Abraham's bosom could be seen by the rich man looking across the great gulf when he saw Lazarus. These are just things I spend time pondering.

That is definitely the second coming. But what you underlined still doesn't say how long... And gnashing of teeth is possible for the dead before and after the second coming.

What you underlined isn't in my NKJV ! :cautious:

Who is who?

the punishment of eternal fire.
blackest darkness has been reserved forever.

In Revelation 20:14 the lake of fire is called THE SECOND DEATH. Not eternal life in hell. Only Satan and His angels suffer eternal life in hell. Mankind lost their immortality when Adam sinned and only the born again regained it through their first death (being crucified with Christ and resurrected, and the death of the body being changed in the twinkling of an eye.

That's about all I have to say.

Hello @charismaticlady,

I like your first sentence. For it is the fire, the means of destruction itself, that is without end: but will you please show me from Scripture where we are told that human beings were created immortal?

Thank you

Hello @civic,

You have applied yourself to study many aspects of doctrine, and have posted your findings. Have you done so in regard to the use of the middle English word, 'Hell': Chosen to translate the Hebrew and Greek words Hades, Sheol, Gehenna & Tartarus; in the light of the root meaning of the word Hell itself, prior to it's use and misuse subsequently, and the influence of Greek philosophy upon it? It's root meaning is 'to hide away', and is used of the place of the dead?

If you have I would be interested in seeing your findings.

Thank you
In Christ Jesus
Chris

In the beginning when God created everything, nothing with blood in it died. Life is in the blood, Genesis 9. Death only came upon Adam and Eve when they ate of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. Genesis 2:17 "ye shall surely die."
