It depends what you mean. You're absolutely right here, @Donald--and it's encouraging to see your acknowledgment that anything, including Rome, can be subject to error.
As believers, we are all called to “speak the truth in love” and to strive together “until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God” (Ephesians 4:13).
May we continue to contend earnestly for the faith (Jude 1:3) and fight the good fight with grace and integrity.
God bless.
Johann.
If you mean that individual Catholics including the pope can err. Nobody disputes it.
There are a lot of Catholics so a lot of sinners and sadly too many who got to high places.
But If you mean dogmatic decisions taken in council or by the pope ex cathedra can be in error.
No , Rome is always right.
Just as when it chose the New Testament.
It outlawed many heresies on such as the nature of Christ ( Arianism)
The power to bind and loose, the right to teach and hand down doctrine to which you must stay true.
It’s also why the church IS the pillar of truth .
That’s the way Jesus made it , and wanted it, and put it in scripture.
But then the pope only ever makes ex cathedra decisions to resolve disputes in wide consultation with the bishops of succession. He does not create new doctrine, he only chooses between existing paths. Just as pre Christ there was Moses seat.
Sadly Protestants have no way to resolve disputes so they live in endless division and schism which is very sad to see.
