Most people have no idea what Concupiscence actually means. However, you should know and understand this early modern English word. Concupiscence found its way in many Bible translations in the formative periods of English Bible translations. For example, it made its way into the both the Geneva and KJV Bibles
Rom 7:8 But sin, taking occasion by the commandment, wrought in me all manner of concupiscence. For without the law sin was dead.
You can find Concupiscence in the Geneva, DRB, Bishops, Webster, and other bibles from the general period. The Greek source simply means "lust". Most modern translations use "lust" or "coveting" to represent the Greek source.
ἐπιθυμία
The first uses of ἐπιθυμία are found in Ancient Greek and simply means "desire" or "passion". In context of Ancient Greek, it has a "POSITIVE" connotations such as "aspirations".
I mention because it is important to understand how men pervert languages. If you trace the history of Concupiscence and "its path" into English, you will discover something very interesting. In my history, I've often fought against KJVOism. A very long time ago, I began the journey to know the origins of words and how they are used throughout languages to communicate thought. I came across these facts then. I've often used these facts to destroy the KJVOist position but it goes much deeper than this.
Augustine basically "coined the phrase" as it is used today from "concupiscentia" which is Latin and has its origins in "cupere". Which simply means "to desire". Under Augustine's influence and the power of the Catholic church, Concupiscence began and ultimately morphed into "a life of its own."
So when you read the English word "Concupiscence" in these Bibles, you're actually accepting Augustine's and the Catholic churches view of "original sin" by default. You can't help but accept those teachings because the meaning of Concupiscence is tied to the doctrine of original sin as taught by Catholicism and shared by Protestantism and Baptist. Yes. Baptists as we know them today are Protestants. Same is true of Methodists, Wesleyans and etc.
Most people take this path that those before us set up for us to take by simply never asking questions. Just accept what you read and move on. I can't do this.
What you need to do is understand why this happened. People love controlling narratives. There is no better place to "control a narrative" than to do exactly what happened with "Concupiscence".
For hundreds of years, the very word itself implied the doctrine of "original sin" that somehow produced in humanity a "fallen nature" that can't help but desire evil. To lust after evil.
Such beliefs spread and find their ways into doctrine such as "total depravity" and "inability" all found in this "word of God" they claim you must accept without question.
I'm not asking you to take my "word for it". Research it yourself. I don't often give "all the answers" to most any subject because I want people to learn these things themselves. For them to "make their beliefs their own".
If you think of it, and I hope you do, you might "see" that God has designed this life the way it exists for this very purpose. You're not bound by the efforts and chains of those before you.
So look at it yourself and lets talk about it....
