May I add my own testimony, which obviously is not direct Scripture?
Jesus is the purpose and meaning of life. Every word that proceeds from His mouth is the Word of God. We live and are sustained by His word.
Every creature in heaven, which includes ten thousand times ten thousand angels, and on earth and under the earth shouts out, "You are worthy of all glory and honor and blessing and dominion and riches, and wisdom, and might, and power, for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation." Taken from Rev. 5:12-13
The creeds are not scripture. I don't see Jesus descending into hell in the Bible. 1 Peter 3:18-20 seems to refer to the Holy Spirit in Noah preaching to his generation, not Jesus going into hell. Also Jesus said that He was three days and three nights in the heart of the earth, which seems to be saying simply that He was dead for three days and three nights.
By the way, why would Jesus go to hell in the first place? To preach to those who are being tormented? What would He possibly say to them? Their judgment is already set in stone.
One of the other creeds says that Jesus was "eternally begotten". Wrong, He was begotten only one time - from Mary's womb.
Then there are several creeds that are infested with Calvinism. BAD!!
For example, look at the following. The Heidelberg Catechism seems to be the only one that is not Calvinistic, but then, I don't know all of what it says either. I find it best to just focus on the Word and/or solid teaching on the Word.
- The Westminster Confession of Faith emphasizes predestination and God's sovereignty.
- The Belgic Confession outlines the Reformed faith, including the doctrines of grace.
- The Heidelberg Catechism focuses on salvation through faith and God's covenant.
- The Canons of Dort affirm the five points of Calvinism (TULIP).
- The London Baptist Confession of 1689 reflects Calvinistic beliefs in Baptist theology.
- The Synod of Dort established key Calvinistic doctrines in response to
So then, none of the creeds are "my cup of tea".
