before man can have faith, he must be made alive, otherwise he is dead in sin and unbelief. By nature we are dead in the realm of sin Col 2:13
13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
That word in is the prep en meaning:

We are dead in the state of sin, under its power and control like when Paul wrote Rom 3:9

The only thing that can help is mercy shown in regeneration Titus 3:5
So if a person believes, obeys the Gospel its evidence of having been regenerated, given Spiritual life and liberated from unbelief.
