“How does ‘the Word was a god’ fit with the Bible’s teaching that there is only one God?”

“If all things were created through Him, then either He created Himself ....which makes no sense ....or He isn’t part of creation. Otherwise we’re stuck in a circle where the creator has to create Himself first. And if He’s just part of creation, then how does ‘all things’ actually mean all....everything except Him? Then you’re left trying to explain how He existed before Mary but was also born from her later.”
All other things were created through him. He was created direct-first and last( Prov 8:22)= only begotten son-Trinity religions twist the meaning of that, they have to.

No where does the bible teach that.
The Bible does not need to use that exact phrase to teach the truth of it. The New Testament identifies Jesus with Yahweh by repeatedly applying Old Testament scriptures about Yahweh directly to Him.

Isaiah says, “Prepare the way of Yahweh,” yet the Gospels say that prophecy was fulfilled in preparing the way for Jesus.

Joel says, “Whoever calls on the name of Yahweh shall be saved,” yet Romans applies that to calling on Jesus.

Psalm 102 speaks of Yahweh as Creator whose years never end, yet Hebrews applies those words to the Son.

So while Jesus’ human name means “Yahweh saves,” Scripture reveals Him as sharing the divine identity of Yahweh.
