There was a tradition among some near eastern cultures that when a boy came of age, he was led out by an older man and sexually assaulted as an initiation rite into the community. The ancient equivalent of godless people “jumping in” to join a gang in modern culture.
There are some that speculate that Sodom practiced such a ritual and the events with Lot reflect an invitation by evil men to “honor” Lots guests by allowing them to become members of the community. Remember that the Abrahamic covenant required adult circumcision as a ritual to join the community, even honorary (like the people that were killed by Dinah’s brothers … I think I got the names right). So Lot offered his daughters as a substitute for the angels in this ritual (I still have issues with Lot over that one). The city, rather than being raging homosexuals unable to control passions, were actually furious that these “foreigners” (Lot and the visitors) had rejected their customs and ways and offer to be part of the Sodom community.
It is just scholarly speculation, but it makes more sense of the facts than many reasons that have been guessed at. Ultimately, the men of Sodom were evil … rejecting the knowledge of God and doing what was right in their own eyes. For THAT, they were destroyed.

"RIGHTIOUS" Lot. this story is a TYPE, FIGURE, and SHADOW, of things to come. the EVIL will be destroyed, just as in Lot day, 2 Peter 2:6 "And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha into ashes condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly;"
